introduction

The following portfolio will hopefully give some insight into who I am - my interests, my design philosophy, my beliefs, my style, my past experience and my future direction. In my portfolio I have presented a collection of projects I have been involved with through my previous companies, as well as freelance projects. My portfolio is organised into two categories. Because the majority of my work experience is in architecture, this is the first chapter, and makes up the bulk of the projects presented. I have been working in China for 5 years now, in several architectural companies, and I have gained valuable understanding of working as an architect in China. I have been fortunate enough to work a range of scales of project, from urban master planning down to single residential properties. I have worked on projects in all phases, from preliminary design concept through to construction, though most of my involvement is in the design phases. More of my architectural portfolio can be found at www.issuu.com/ shelleymock. Following architecture is a brief chapter on interior design, that includes a few freelance projects. It is in the interior design pages that I hope my own style and ethic become apparent, as it is this area I am more interested in now.

YEAR: 2013 PROJECT: WUHAN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN OFFICE PARK OFFICE: logon DESCRIPTION: Master planning and architectural design project. With a total area of 200 000sqm and a plot ration of 3, this high density office complex needed careful marketing analysis and projection strategy in order to be competitive with neighbouring office parks. The design focuses on a central public retail and cultural building that acts as both divider and unifier of the different office type areas - headquarters, incubator and R+D.

PROJECT: ORGANIKAFARM RESIDENCE SCHEMATIC DESIGN

organika farm residence, queensland, australia

OFFICE: freelance DESCRIPTION: The client has recently purchased an organic farm property in central Queensland, Australia. They have asked for preliminary house design and floor plans. The design is largely dictated by passive cooling and heating techniques, such as long eaves and fenestration designed to encourage natural crossventilation. The client wishes to use the traditional Queenslander aesthetic, a style that developed through adapting to local climate. The functional organisation is contemporary, following an open-plan layout for the central public spaces, with large glazed walls allowing outside and inside to merge. Currently in schematic design phase.

PROJECT: ZHENGZHOU OFFICE TOWER COMPETITION ENTRY

2012

10

OFFICE: Architektonic

zhengzhou office tower zhengzhou, china

DESCRIPTION: A competition entry for 30 storey office tower in the new business district area of Zhengzhou. The architectural form arose from climate studies that showed the best way to harness wind and solar energies for passive heating and cooling. The proposal requirements also included detailed design of important interior spaces, such as the lobby and conference center.

PROJECT: THE 72 STUDIO CONSTRUCTION + PHOTODOCUMENTATION

2013

22

the 72 studio, shanghai, china

OFFICE: freelance DESCRIPTION: The 72 Studio is a new music recording studio in Shanghai, designed and built by the owners themselves, with help from friends and various local tradesmen. The construction phase took roughly 6 months and is now operational. Involvement in this project provided first hand experience in all aspects of the construction process in China - a better understanding of working with contractors, meeting building code requirements, and following time schedules. The project has also brought a much deeper understanding of building materials, and an appreciation for material reuse. Throughout construction we sought to use materials that would otherwise go towards landfill, using materials such as denim off-cuts and car door internal lining as soundproofing insulation.

PROJECT: SUSHI BAR CHANGLE RD, SHANGHAI

2012

24

OFFICE: freelance

sushi bar changle rd shanghai, china

DESCRIPTION: The manager of a 20sqm, irregular plan sushi bar wanted a new fitout for the interior. The clients’ focus was to fit as many people as possible in a comfortable layout, and redecorate within a tight budget. Certain features could not be changed, such as the front glass wall and position of the door, and the vinyl flooring. The design proposal used a minimal material palette, highlighting texture over colour. The main feature is a timber grid that lines the ceiling/wall edge, helping to regulate the unusual angles and also function as a display shelf. Other storage features are added to reduce objects cluttering the tables, such as coat hooks, bag storage within stools and condiment trays fixed to the walls.

PROJECT: STAIR DESIGN MINHAI BUSINESS PARK NINGBO, CHINA

2010

25

OFFICE: Zerolab Office

stair design minhai business park, ningbo, china

DESCRIPTION: Conceptual design for an interior staircase in an office. As the stair is in the center of the space, it has become the focal point of the design, and therefore taken an irregular sculptural form.

PROJECT: THE 72 STUDIO BAR AND SEATING AREA

2013

26

bar + seating area, the 72 studio, shanghai, china

OFFICE: freelance DESCRIPTION: This area of the studio acts as a waiting area for visitors as well as relaxing area for staff. It is also one of the first main points of contact for new visitors, as they pass on their way to the office around the corner. The design was adapted to the floor plan, making use of excess circulation space. The front to the bar has been finished in a glass mosaic, using tiles that were sourced from a local demolition site. The result captures the creative spirit the studio promotes, at the same time provides a cost-effective and environmentally conscious design solution. Currently in construction.
