Shelby County RSVP Retire to Inspire February 2011 Tax Information: This is the season that all of us thinking about filing our tax returns. I contacted our accountant, James Harmon, Columbiana, to find out about dedications that can be made for volunteering. Below is the IRS information for both 2010 and 2011. The 2011 information might help for next year’s returns. IRS Announces 2010 Standard Mileage Rates (IR2009111, Dec. 3, 2009) WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today issued the 2010 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes. Beginning on Jan. 1, 2010, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be: • 50 cents per mile for business miles driven • 16.5 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes • 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations The new rates for business, medical and moving purposes are slightly lower than last year’s. The mileage rates for 2010 reflect generally lower transportation costs compared to a year ago. IRS Announces 2011 Standard Mileage Rates (IR2010119, Dec. 3, 2010) Beginning on Jan. 1, 2011, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be: • 51 cents per mile for business miles driven • 19 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes • 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations These rates apply to nonreimbursed mileage.
Adult Lifelong Learning Survey Shelby County Public Libraries, Shelby County Schools and the University of Montevallo’s Department of Continuing Education are collaborating on a survey to assess the needs of the population for lifelong learning. The survey can be conducted online or a hard copy can be secured through this office or the public libraries. New Program – Shelby County Yellow Dot Program Shelby County RSVP is working with first responders and law enforcement agencies in Shelby County on a program where if you are involved in an auto accident, the yellow dot decal on your car window will alert the first responders that there is vital information about the person in the car’s glove compartment. More information will be forthcoming in the near future as this program develops. Members of your station, their families, and the community can participate at no cost.
New Volunteer Opportunities Spirit of Hope Youth Ranch – allows children who are emotionally stressed the opportunity to work with horses. Affinity Home Hospice Services looks for help with telephone, office assistance, mailings, family support, home assistance and friendly visiting. Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and Program – work with or on the committee for the annual MLK parade and program conduct annually in Montevallo. This will include helping with parade participation and the program honoring Dr. King after the parade. Columbiana Family History Center – volunteers assist individuals tracing their family ancestry using the Church of Latter Day Saints Church’s computer family research center in Columbiana. The Center is planning an open house in March for seniors to familiarize you with the free ancestry research programs available. See the March newsletter for details. Helena Senior Center (XYZ) – the Senior Center offers social, game, and exercise activities. The Center is located directly behind the Helena City Hall. Pelham Homemakers – meetings are held at the Lakeview United Methodist Church on Highway 11. Their activities include crafts, sewing, and quilting. Shelby County Yellow Dot Program – this program will be enrolling citizens in the program and publicizing information in your community of enrollment dates and times in the Yellow Dot Program. The Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo will be opening their welcome center in the near future. They will be looking for volunteers to greet and assist visitors with information and directions.
