Prestonpans Infant School December 2016

Christmas Shopping Night put us in the mood and raised around £1000 to subsidise the cost of the children going to see Aladdin, the pantomime at the Brunton. Thank you all for supporting the school and the children so generously. A particular thank you goes to the Parent Council fundraising group and their helpers for the hard work they have put in over months to organise the Christmas Shopping Night.

We teach Religious and Moral Education in 2 blocks every year. In December the children will be learning about Christianity. In April they will learn about another religion. Nursery and P1 will learn about the birth of Jesus. P1 will visit Prestongrange Church. P2 will learn about the life of Jesus. P2 will visit the Salvation Army. P3 will be learn about Baptism, Communion and Weddings and will be shown round St Gabriel’s Church by the P7s of St Gabriel’s School.

Prestonpans Community Council’s annual procession to the War Memorial to light the Christmas Tree starts at the Community Centre at 5.15pm on Sunday 4 December 2016. P3c and P3d will be singing Christmas songs at Harlawhill Day Centre and at the Johnny Moat on Friday 16th December in the morning.

Mrs Lesley Laydon, teacher in the nursery, is moving to P2a to teach the children on Monday, Tuesday and alternate Fridays from January 2017. The current nursery nurses will fill Mrs Laydon’s post until the summer. Ms Laing’s post has been advertised as an Acting Headteacher position until December 2018. Interviews are planned for the last week of term. Fiona Robertson, Head of Education will keep us informed about the post. The Parent Council will choose one of their trained members to be on the interview panel with Fiona Robertson and David Scott (our Quality Improvement Officer). The supply staff in the office are Mrs Caroline Wilson (Wed— Fri) and Mrs Kate Simmons (Mon—Thurs). We will be interviewing and hope to appoint a Business Support Administrator and Assistant before Christmas. Mrs Alison Selkirk has been volunteering in a P2 class to support a child who is hearing impaired. She has taught us all so much about communication and sign language and we are very grateful to her. We wish her well in her future. Ms Pam Myles continues to work in the class as a Communication Support Assistant and again teaches us all a lot about communicating clearly with signing.

Unfortunately we have had a small number of incidents of lice within the school. We alerted you to this by text. Nobody wants this to be going on for Christmas so can we ask EVERY FAMILY to Bug Bust on Friday 2nd December please. Bug bust means wetting children’s hair and checking with a nit comb. If we all check our children’s hair that weekend and treat any unwelcome visitors, we should help each other have a healthy, lice free Christmas. Thanks.

Our campaign to ask parents and carers to park away from school and walk here starts on Friday 2 December 2016 when you will get a leaflet home. During the week beginning Monday 5 December, staff and our Infant Road Safety Officers will join the Police and East Lothian’s new Parking Attendants to encourage and enforce good parking near the school. St Gabriel’s, Prestonpans Primary and Prestonpans Infants are working on this campaign together. You have been notified, please park carefully, legally and safely near the school.

The Brunton Hogmanay family events are on Wee Pans and the Brunton website; Family Ceilidhs, Illuminated lantern making, Samba Drumming workshops, Sam and Rosie’s Highland Adventure, The Three Giants and lots more. The staff serve the children and we have a lovely Christmassy meal. Each year group has the Christmas Lunch on a different day.
