When I first came to this University little over two years ago a pint of Carlsberg was £2, it is now £2.20, this increase has rendered so many of us saddened, struggling, and sober. This is just one example of the unjust rise in the price of and sheer disregard for the importance of alcohol at our Students’ Union. But it does not have to be this way. I will fight for cheaper booze in your SU so that you can enjoy a cheap and safe night out. Furthermore, I will also fight for VK Vending Machines to reduce bar queues, Irish Coffee in Coffee Revolution because why not? I will stay down-to-Earth and in touch with students by holding a weekly surgery at Pop Tarts where you can tell me your unfiltered opinions of the SU. I shall not be just your President, I’ll be your drinking buddy, your publican, and your shoulder to cry on in the drunken twilight. Vote for: ● A fight for cheaper alcohol ● VK Vending Machines ● Irish Coffee in Coffee Revolution ● Weekly Surgery at Pop Tarts ● Re-naming the position of President to ‘Publican’ If you agree with all/any of the above then you know what to do. Vote Booze, Vote Bailey. Cheers!

Our President candidates Thomas (Theo) Routh
I’m Theo, and I’m hoping to be your next SU president. If elected, I will guide our great establishment through the process of unilaterally seceding from the UK, and begin the process of joining the EU and the UN. As your president, these will be my priorities for my year in office: 1. Sheffield SU will unilaterally secede from the UK, and seek to join the EU and the UN as a member state. 2. Solidarity with the University and College union and their fight to oppose the floating of their pension funds on the stock market. 3. For every healthy tree Sheffield City Council cuts down in Sheffield, we will plant something equally healthy in our SU. 4. Increased support for students who travel to university from outside of Sheffield, and for mature students, through an ‘accessibility audit’ in which these students are consulted on issues they face and potential solutions. 5. A full accounting of the finances of the SU to be published and made readily available. Where our money is raised, and where it is spent. Our student trustee system is good, but there seems to be no reason for there to be so many closed doors. Greater transparency will increase student interest in both the trustee position, and for running for officer positions, where they can put their ideas for change into action.
Thanks for your time. Whether you agree with me or not, please vote.

Education is extremely important to me because it allows people from different backgrounds to come together and learn more about what they truly love. In the UK, we have an amazing educational system where our education is not limited by our financial capability so everyone and anyone can achieve their fullest potential. Everyone at University has chosen to pursue an academic area of their choosing and has infinite resources to indulge their curiosity on the subject. The fact that on top of this, we are able to talk directly to the professors who write the books and do the research is something that none of us should take for granted. However, now that you have a place at this amazing university, what now? We haven't finished something. This is just the start of a new journey. It won't be easy and that is why I want to be the SU officer for education. Someone that can help you all make the most of the University and fix all the issues that may be affecting you and making sure that your voice is heard and those issues resolved. My goal is simple. Make the education we are receiving the best it can possibly be by talking to both students and staff alike. That's it. I won't give you a list of goals because the whole point of this is to make a change depending on what students want to improve.

I will work to ensure that lecturers are trained to be aware of student issues, such as mental health issues, disabilities and other personal issues as I feel it is key for a student to feel comfortable when talking to a lecturer about such issues. The aim being to help students avoid feelings of alienation from their course and to provide a supportive network of teaching staff. As well as this I shall ensure that student services are running as smoothly as possible and that adequate services are provided whether that be improving the counselling system that the university has in place or ensuring that adequate financial advice is available for students who are struggling to get by. Finally I shall ensure that housing and accommodation, be it provided by the university or by external student letting companies, is reasonably priced, well maintained and that the application process is as simple and as stress free as possible.

Our Student Trustee candidates
Hello, I’m Alec. I’m currently a chemistry PhD student and want your vote to become a student trustee.
Student unions are unique organisations which develop their members and officers through passion and representation. In 2013, I was elected Welfare Officer at my previous student union in Cornwall, that year was a roller coaster and the trustees offered invaluable support. Now as a PhD student I would like the opportunity to use my experience of student unions, university management and endlessly unnecessary acronyms to support the Student Union. I have a breadth of experience from being an elected officer, to working in Student Support Services and returning as a post-grad feeling like a lost fresher all over again.
Our union is one of the best unions in the country and has been for the past decade. In the seven years since I started studying here, I have greatly benefited from the opportunities created by the SU and have seen it constantly evolve to maintain this excellence. This is thanks to the Board of Trustees who are responsible for the governance and overall management of the SU. As someone who has benefited from this, I am running to be selected as a Student Trustee to enable the same opportunities for future students.
I am a postgraduate mature student studying for an MA in Social Research and I am therefore from two of the three under-represented groups identified by the Students’ Union in the person specification. I have experience of helping to run successful voluntary organisations both as a trustee and as a chair of trustees, having been on the board of charities providing services to people affected by AIDS/HIV and Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). I previously worked for the NHS in a very wide range of roles and I have particular experience and skills in Governance and both Financial and Change management. If I was to be elected I would not only seek to ensure that the Students’ Union was well and effectively run, but that it listened to, understood and delivered on the wide range of aspirations of students at the University. One of the key roles of the Board of Trustees is to set and monitor the Students’ Union Strategy. My priorities would be: ● Significantly reducing the environmental impact of all of the Union’s activities. ● A focus on improving diversity and inclusion ● Supporting students to improve their health and wellbeing, including our mental health ● Offering services that are good value for money ● Supporting our local communities
During my time at Sheffield I have been an active member of several societies including SUSO, korfball and ChemSoc. For the latter, I have been Treasurer for two years whilst also being Inclusions Officer for one. In these positions I have contributed to the running of ChemSoc by setting out clear strategies for the year to benefit our members, organising events to fit the strategy and ensuring the society stayed within budget. This makes me suitable to be a trustee because I would be expected to perform similar roles. As a PhD student I also have plenty of experience of responsibility, support, collaboration and organisation which I will use to uphold the values of the SU and to deliver a SU that benefits us all. Thank you for reading my statement and please make me your no. 1 choice.
Before moving to Sheffield I was a volunteer council member at the British Red Cross (Cornwall). Although at times a challenge, this experience taught me the importance of always looking after the members in your organisation. In the Student Union that is us, from many different cultures, communities and countries. We have different hopes and expectations from our university experience and as a trustee I would aim to support the elected officers in making those hopes and expectations heard. As a trustee I would make sure the structure and strategy enables the elected officers to fulfil their manifesto’s promises. The Student Union should continue to be responsive to its members and political changes. I believe in empowering those whose voices are not always heard and making sure opportunities are available to everyone. As a student trustee I would be vocal on maintaining clarity and integrity in policy and practice.
Hi Friends! I’m Mithuna Maran, pursuing 1st year of Ph.D in Architecture and I’m running for the Student Trustee. Five years of Undergraduate Class Representative experience had taught me the value and management of tangible and intangible resources. The role of a Student Trustee demands two general perspectives. I promise to be a person of Tranparency, Integrity and Fairness to emphasise the ‘student’ nature of the role and ensure the sustainability of resources throughout my tenure, emphasising the ‘trustee’ aspect of this esteemed position. In this survival of the fittest, I commit to give my attention and energy to your trust, and work with dedication to show that ‘we all are connected and we all are one’.

I am the best candidate to be the student trustee as 'low time-commitment role' is how I approach many things in my life. I've been a student at Sheffield for so long that I am beginning to master how to 'learn new skills' and 'work' so this role will be especially apt for me. I study a PhD in Applied Particle Physics so I'll be in Sheffield all year round this is why I can confidently pledge to attend ALL FOUR trustee meetings. Additionally, I've seen the SU develop over the past 5+ years and I think, combined with the Sports at Sheffield, the SU is a very strong selling point for Sheffield as a University which is why I want to help the SU thrive. In addition to my work at Sheffield I've worked in Laboratories in Switzerland and the USA so I'm well aware of HR departments and their role in an organization. I will use these skills to represent Sheffield Students effectively.

The Students' Union's comprehensive efforts in making every student's experience at university an enjoyable and productive one is admirable, and this motivates me to continue the union's good work in the year ahead by helping it to continue operating on its core values of inclusivity and sustainability. I hope to encourage students to play a more active role in not just shaping university life but also in the wider community; no effort is too small to generate a positive impact in the lives of others! My work with the Sheffield Market Society has helped me realize that the union has very robust support system for student-led projects, whether this be in terms of staff advisors or financial help, which enabled my small, humble society to run several market events at the union. It is therefore my mission to further promote these resources and encourage students to step forward and bring their ideas to life. I also have a particular interest in promoting welfare, having benefited from the range of avenues for personal support during difficult times throughout schooling years and at university. Everyone should feel empowered to voice their struggles and opinions, and encouraged to discuss and debate issues that matter to them in a respectful and objective way. Additionally, I believe that wellbeing should be promoted on a regular basis to all students, as I believe everyone stands to benefit from emotional and physical health regardless of whether or not they are facing any personal crises.
Our Trustees The Board of Trustees is the group of people with ultimate responsibility for everything that the Students’ Union does. It is responsible for the governance of the Students’ Union and the financial and strategic management of the organisation. There are 17 people on the board: eight SU Officers, four external trustees, three appointed student trustees and two annually elected student trustees. This year we have seven candidates running for the two roles. To find out more, visit sheffieldsu.com/elections. 15
