Feature Release Nov. 4, 2013

Let’s not forget the far side of the moon DUBAI- In the early morning and before the sunrise she wears her one and only abaya that is filled with holes, after that she wears her face cover that she never leave home without and heed strait to her 1990 Sunny car. This is how Balkees, a Bangladeshi widow and a mother of four in Dubai start her day. Despite the hot weather, the car’s air conditioner that blows hot air every now and then, and the rising prices of patrol, Balkees spends almost all of her day in her old car working as a driver for Zayed University students. According to her, this is the only way she found to support her family. “I have to work as hard as I can to provide money for the house rent and my children’s education,” said Balkees “it might get very hard sometimes to work, but I have no other choice it‘s either this or I will disappoint my beloved children.” (more)

Despite the hard life she lives she always stay optimistic and her smile never leave her face. According to everyone who knows her the sentence “ All hamdu lellah” which means “Thank you God” never leave her lips. “People might think that I live a very hard life, but they don’t know that I could never dream of such a life in my own country,” she said “I prefer to stay in the UAE without a job rather than go back to my country. At least here I know that I can stay alive and me and my children will never sleep starving.” These world that she confessed did not come from no ware. According to her, an Emirate women who is a mother of one of her previous clients’ got a visa for her four children. Another one of her clients arranged for one of her children a part time job in her father’s company. Balkees’ schedule is always full “I think that because many Zayed University girls do not drive and some families don’t have the time to drive their daughters to schools I got to have my clients.” That is why she thinks that the UAE is the perfect place for her and Zayed University in particular since all her clients are females. When asking her about her dream she immediately answered without thinking, “Mecca, I want to go to Mecca to thank my creator for giving me graces that I cannot count and for giving me such a wonderful life.” This is her life dream but for know all she wants is to give her children the best education that she could not have. Just like the Emirate poet Eibrahim Mohamed once said: there are three types of homeland one that you were born in, one that you live in and one that lives in you. Balkees considers the UAE her country that she was not born in but it was born in her. “I love UAE, I consider it my country because it gave me a job, safety, an education for my children and a roof above my head. Is not that all you want in a country?” (more)

Balkees is just like a moon that shines and guide people in the dark. With her limited capabilities she tries her best to help her family and Zayed University girls. Just like how the full moon describes beauty, so does our life. It will be more beautiful if we looked to all parts of the moon, if appreciated people like Balkees. ###

This memo is to inform you that the feature release for Zajel is ready. This feature release goes in the line with Zajel’s editorial calendar theme of the week which is focusing on people behind the curtains and stories of human interest. I chose to write about Balkees who is a poor car driver that drives Zayed University students. Since our target audience here is the student they will be interested because some students might already know her and because it also highlights the importance and the effort that some of Zayed university family members go through. Students will also be interested in this peace since it is a story about someone near them or some one that they know already. I will be waiting for your approval to publish this feature release. Thank you.
