Building Considerations Wide Span Sheds and Wide Span Industrial are equipped to design buildings to meet your requried Importance Level (IL) and building class. Two criteria worth understanding are Importance Levels (IL) and Building Classes: A

C

Importance Levels The Building Code of New Zealand nominates that buildings must be designed in accordance with certain criteria referred to as Importance Levels (IL).

B

Buildings designed to the wrong importance level can result in certifiers refusing occupation of your premises.

Importance level 1 Buildings presenting a low degree of hazard to life and other property in the event of failure, for example farm buildings.

Importance level 2 Buildings not included in 1, 3 or 4, for example houses.

What sets us apart from our competition

Importance level 3 Buildings or structures that are designed to contain a large number of people, for eample a football stadium.

A

▪ New Zealand Steel 450-550 MPa cold-rolled Steel ▪ Apex bracket to full depth of the rafter ‘C’ sections with full width return flanges for strength.

Importance level 4

▪ Pre-punched end fitted with bolts and high tensile self-drilling screws.

Buildings that are essential to post disaster recovery or associated with hazardous facilities, for example an aircraft control tower.

Building Classes

▪ Apex brace (collar tie in tension) is vital in the construction process and aids greatly in maintaining structural integrity in high winds. B

Commercial and Industrial premises may comprise offices, factories, warehouses, shops, schools and sporting venues. The New Zealand Building Code classifies these buildings as Classes 4 and 5.

Haunch System ▪ 450-550 MPa cold-rolled New Zealand Steel ▪ Designed to strengthen the rafter-over-column haunch joint and prevent axial torque (twisting). ▪ Knee brace provided to strengthen the haunch connection in the most critical area of the building.

Wide Span Sheds supplies buildings designed to meet all the individual requirements of Class 4 and 5 buildings.

Building Class 5

Apex System

C

Purlin & Girt Overlap ▪ 450-550 MPa cold-rolled New Zealand Steel

A non-habitable building such as a garage, shed, etc.

▪ Minimum 10% overlap

Building Class 4 Office building for commercial purposes; shop or other building for the sale of goods by retail; storage building or for sale of goods by wholesale; building for production, assembling on for trade care building; building of a public nature such as an assembly or health care building.

▪ Supports frame and delivers added overall strength to the entire structure D

Base Plate ▪ 450-550 MPa cold-rolled New Zealand Steel ▪ Fitted with bolts and high tensile self-drilling screws

Cold Form Steel Building Systems

Cold form steel building systems Wide Span Sheds specialises in the design and supply of pre-engineered cold rolled steel buildings suitable for domestic, commercial, agricultural and light industrial applications. Wide Span Sheds buildings are flexible and customisable in terms of height, span and length and the range is complimented by a comprehensive range of optional extras from ventilation to insulation and everything in between. Wide Span Sheds range of buildings offer flexible design parameters within a pre-engineered framework ensuring absolute value and efficiency for your next project.

Building applications Our range of cold form buildings are suitable for use as:

▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪

Garages and workshops Barns, stables and equestrian arenas Farm buildings and agricultural sheds Dairy and commercial covers Recreational buildings Retail outlets Commercial complexes Warehouses

Building capabilities ▪ Flexible design parameters ▪ Multiple layout combinations ▪ Heights up to 7 metres ▪ Clear spans up to 25 metres ▪ Lengths in excess 100 metres ▪ Snow and earthquake loading ▪ Designed to Importance Level 2 ▪ Large range of optional inclusions More complex specifications can be achieved under our Wide Span Industrial built up portal system.

Premium quality steel Wide Span Sheds prides itself on the supply of buildings manufactured in cold-rolled New Zealand Steel leveraging 450MPa (or greater) GALVSTEEL® structural steel with 0.40 high grade sheeting in both ZINCALUME® and COLORSTEEL® options.

Incredible engineering Wide Span Sheds buildings leverage an industry-recognised rafter-over-column haunch system and generous purlin and girt overlap. We’ve also pioneered a footing design incorporating flange fixing brackets as a base plate. This ensures ultimate overall strength to the entire building.

Fantastic value Pre-engineered buildings utilise highly efficient engineering resulting in the minimum requirement of steel required to achieve structural building strength.

Fabricated Portal Building Systems

05

Fabricated portal building systems For larger projects, Wide Span Industrial use a built up portal system in which buildings are designed to peak engineering and efficiency. These built up design sections along with balanced connections utilise the best of compression, tension and offset engineering techniques for structural efficiency. A fabricated built up structure engineered to peak efficiency can be lighter than conventional steel building by up to 30% resulting in significant savings for the building overall.

Building capabilities The scope for built up structures is close to limitless with Wide Span Industrial's proven ability to supply and construct massive buildings up to 11,300 metric tonnes with heights of up to 34 metres and clear spans between 90 metres and 120 metres. These pre-engineered fabricated portal buildings are manufactured using state-of-the-art machinery including fully automated, submerged arc welding lines in several facilities that currently output more than 120,000 metric tonnes of pre-engineered steel buildings every year.

Quality systems Wide Span Industrial utilise the latest international building codes, safety and quality systems including IBC 2006 International. Building Code, AISC 2005 Design Code Steel Construction Manual, MBMA 2002 Metal Building Systems Manual, AISI 2003 Cold Formed Steel Code and ISO 9001-2000 (supply and erection). All buildings supplied are Building Code of Australia compliant.

Building advantages Under the pre-engineered portal frame system buildings can be designed and manufactured quickly, usually taking 6-8 weeks (depending on project size) as opposed to 20-26 weeks with a conventional steel building. The erection process is streamlined in time and equipment due to lightweight sections and are easy to construct without the need for extensive field labour or heavy equipment. The result is a quick to deploy, efficiently designed and lower cost build.

Did you know? Pre-engineering steel buildings originated in the United States shortly after WWII where they were accepted as a viable solution to meet the demand for rapid economic growth.
