THE CHOICE COURAGE OVER COMFORT

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT THE MANY COURAGEOUS DECISIONS YOU’VE MADE AS AN ENTREPRENEUR?

You might be familiar with the language, “courage over comfort,” by the incredibly thought-provoking work of Brene Brown. The powerful storyteller and leader in the work of vulnerability, shame, and courage has given us a profound blueprint of living an authentic life — with meaning and intention.

I’m sure you know that starting and developing a business invites us to step out of our comfort zone (even when it seems the scariest) and into braving the path of courageous creativity — well, that’s what I call the journey of entrepreneurship.

The humanistic and relevant themes of Brene’s work have been instrumental for me on my journey with mental health challenges. Living in pursuit of perfection, and engaging in shame-covering over the years, had built a considerably solid armour that limited my movement into choosing courage.

Therapy has taught me so much about my courage. Courage is about showing up - despite fear and adversity. Think about how you show up in the many areas of your life, and the many roles you take on as women and entrepreneurs. Courage connects us to the heart of being, which then connects us to the art of creating — creating within our day-to-day lives, our work, and communities. Here are some ideas on building a "courage over comfort" practice:

Embrace vulnerability: If the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we are all vulnerable — people, businesses, systems, structures — all of us are susceptible to the fragility of life. We have repeatedly learned that we are not always in control. In this pandemic season, we are continuously exposed to constant states of fear and uncertainty, leaving our stress response centre overworked and exhausted. Embracing vulnerability may be easier said than done. But, while it’s associated with numerous challenging emotional states, it is a beautiful experience when we can lean in and embrace it — often leading to greater resiliency and authentic connection with others. SHEcorporatedMagazine.com

Explore your definition of vulnerability — how has it influenced your ability to make tough decisions, be open and honest with yourself and others, and establish healthy boundaries for yourself and your business? Remember, vulnerability does NOT mean weakness — it means you are honouring what could be your greatest strength — and showing up in courage to be seen for who you are.

Name what you feel - and listen without attachment: Embracing vulnerability requires us to be present in our mind, body, and spirit. It is a constant, daily evaluation of what we are feeling, how we are feeling it, and what we are doing with it. When we align with our emotions, we equip ourselves to make courageous decisions. Just because we are courageous does not mean we do not experience difficult emotions like fear. Instead, when courage shows up against fear, acknowledge it, get curious about it, ask fear why it's there, and influence it to your advantage, but don’t let it sit in the driver’s seat. Suppressing hard emotions and fears may feel like selfpreservation; however, it also delays the authentic rewards of positive experiences and outcomes in our lives.

4

Challenge your comfort, and leave the zone: Oooh, this one may not always feel great in the moment, but you will be glad you left it. Expanding out of our comfort zone is about our mindset and practical small steps of action. Practice doing everyday tasks differently; look for opportunities to challenge yourself. What is one thing you can do today that scares you or challenges your comfort zone? When we practice leaving our comfort zone, we can increase our skillset, our self-confidence, and foster creativity and resiliency.

Celebrate courageous actions: You made a hard decision; you allowed yourself to be vulnerable; you succeeded in the face of adversity — these are just some of the outcomes of being courageous. What experiences can you add to your “Wall of Courageous Achievement”? Honour your courageous wins, because you are worthy of being celebrated! There are no guarantees in life — but what we do have is far more valuable, and that’s courage!

MONEY MAGNET

How to Attract More Money into your Life

You have probably heard of, and even practiced the concepts of attracting money over the years. Things like; setting goals, creating dream boards, doing visualizations, using affirmations, and all the positive woo-woo thinking, which may or may not have worked for you. The key to making these strategies work for you is in also examining your beliefs and values. You need to understand what you personally believe and value, before the strategies will have the desired effect. Our beliefs and values are governed by our behaviours, thoughts and our purpose. It affects how we solve problems, negotiate, work, and play. You can only see what you believe. Understanding this, our values must be the starting point. Step 1. What is your Core Value in Life? Take the time to identify your values in life, and you will be one step closer to becoming a Magnet for Money. A value is a long-lasting belief that is important to you, and it is a compass on how we act in our life. Our values form in childhood via parents, teachers, carers, friends, and mentors. To examine your values, you can ask yourself: "What is essential about my life?" Write that down and keep asking "What else?" until you have a list of about 10 answers. Then rate them until you have the number one that seems the most important. That is your Core Value.

7

SHEcorporatedMagazine.com

Think about your core value and how that might serve, or NOT serve you, regarding your thoughts about money. Understanding your core values will provide insight into why you are having trouble attracting money.

Beliefs CAN be changed - you once used to believe in Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy. Decide today which beliefs are limiting, and need to be changed, to become a Money Magnet.

Step 2. What does Money Mean to you?

Now you can practice the attraction methods, so dust off your dream boards and daily affirmations.

Money causes so many emotions, but it is just a means of exchange.

Finally, there is one crucial step - you NEED to take targeted action.

Our beliefs about money are created as kids, through our experiences, environment, parents, and can even define who we are as people. What did your parents say about money, and have you adopted that same belief?

All the positive thinking and affirmations will not drop money on your doorstep without money-creating actions.

If your beliefs clash with your Core Value, you will repel money. When you believe your beliefs to be accurate, you tend to behave in specific ways and even take action to prove your opinion correct by repelling money. Let's put that together – If your core value is to "have fun," and you believe "I have to work hard for my money," or "rich people aren't happy." Can you see how working hard for your money would clash with your core value of having fun?

The common saying is that cash is king, and as entrepreneurs, understanding the importance of the numbers, managing cash flow, and budgeting, is essential. Only when you know how much money you need can you plan, identify, set goals and act. Manifesting requires being clear on exactly what you want, so knowing the dollar amount for your vision board is also vital for successfully attracting money.

POWER

HOW TO SHOW UP "BOLD" IN YOUR BUSINESS. Growing up the youngest of 10 children, I was the lowest rank and the last in line. My siblings made it very clear that I had no authority, and they teased me mercilessly. Athletics and academia became my sources of confidence. I excelled at both, winning the award for Best Student Athlete at my eighth-grade graduation.

9

Naturally, I gravitated towards a career in fitness. Most clients want to lose weight and tone up. It didn’t take me long to realize that without addressing a woman’s inner connection, achieving the weight loss goals still left her feeling unfulfilled. She was satisfied, but her soul seemed to long for something more nourishing and sustainable. I offer bold solutions that create profound inner connections. There are 3 ways I teach to begin listening to your body, so you can show up BOLD in business.

SHEcorporatedMagazine.com

Body Awareness Did you know your body is a map of your entire life experience? Every emotion and thought you have, leaves an imprint on your DNA that affects genetic expression. When you take the time to tune into your body, you can discover its hidden treasures. Unfortunately, many women listen to their inner mean girl who ruthlessly objects to her body saying things like, “Your arms are so flabby.” “Look at how out of shape you are.” This sets off a catastrophic response of feeling bad, and that affects posture, and even the tone of your voice. What can you do now to nurture body awareness? Notice how you are sitting. Do you feel aligned? How are you breathing? Does it feel shallow or deep? As you tune into your body, you may start to notice that you judge yourself. That takes us to the next step. Love Yourself Coming out of the shadows of self-criticism can feel vulnerable. Many women don’t want to be seen. I recommend the book "Mirror Work" by Louise Hay to my private clients. The book offers 21 days of practices, where the reader gives herself pep talks in the mirror each day, and follows guided meditation and journaling prompts. I have noticed that, as a woman falls in love with herself, she makes decisions that align with her well-being. She chooses healthier foods. She feels like getting up and walking. She says NO to the things that do not light her fire. She accepts the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful of her life, and then she is ready to discover her unique movement style.

Photo: Jennifer MacNiven

Dance Authentically If dancing were an expression curated from your soul, what would it look like? Would you be a ballroom dancer or a tap dancer, a tango or belly dancer? I encourage women to find movement that feels playful and inspiring. For years, I used the playground in our neighborhood to exercise while my children played. I have also been known to break out into dance while cooking. Writing exercise prescriptions for clients in the early days of my career felt so contrived. Now I teach my clients how to listen to their own bodies. Have you ever powered through a project, and sat at your desk ignoring your aching back or hips? It felt good to complete the task but at what cost? Next time, you are in “get it done” mode, I encourage you to PAUSE, stand up and ask your body, WHAT IS THE MOST LOVING THING I CAN DO for you right now? You might get an urge to stretch, dance, walk or even grab a glass of water. The more often you engage in this type of conversation with your body, you will learn to listen and follow its cues.

As you develop body awareness and love yourself as you are, you begin to dance authentically to the beat of your own drum. People will notice your BOLD statement and you will attract your tribe. 10

achievable revenue goals, monitor the increased costs associated with increased revenue, and monitor your profit margins, to ensure they stay consistent and don’t decrease.

Do you have big plans for your business?

It offers you direction

You know you are growing your business and have sales targets you want to meet in the next 12 months, but have you planned for it? Do you understand what is involved with meeting your financial goals over the next 12 months? It’s one thing to create big goals for your business, but it’s another thing to plan them out and ensure that you will meet those goals, while maintaining profitability. Optimizing profitability in your business is a smart financial move. When you create a business plan, that maps out where you want your business to go in the next 12 months, you are making a plan and building a financial roadmap and direction for your business. Top reasons why financial plans improve profitability in your business and keep you in business for the long term: It helps you create SMART goals

When you have a roadmap for your business, it gives you an actionable plan so you can measure your results against those goals. When you fall short of your goals, your numbers provide you with valuable feedback, and you see what went wrong and how you can improve your process to achieve your goals. You can keep your profit margins tight as you continue to grow Profit margins are an important key performance indicator (KPI) that you should monitor. When you have plans of growing, you will need to add resources, such as new hires, to support that growth. A financial plan helps you map out the costs of the new expenses, and see if your business can absorb these extra costs.

IS IT TIME FOR HELP? THE BENEFITS OF OUTSOURCING

As a female business owner, it can feel overwhelming to have to juggle so many different tasks and feel like you are constantly putting out fires. But what if I told you that you could pass off some of the work, and get back to the reason you started your business in the first place. This is where outsourcing working comes into play. You may have heard the term ‘virtual assistant’ already, but let’s take a quick look at what that actually means. A virtual assistant is an independent contractor who provides services to clients, while operating outside of the client's office. A virtual assistant typically operates from a home office, but can access the necessary documents, such as shared calendars, remotely. SHEcorporatedMagazine.com

I like to think of a virtual assistant being a female business owner’s secret weapon, because there are so many ways you can benefit from having one (or more) on your team. Whether you have a virtual, or a brick-and-mortar business, outsourcing work can be beneficial and help your business grow. 5 Ways Outsourcing Work Benefits YOU Time - With time being the most valuable asset, it is critical to hire people to whom you can delegate. Money - You can easily save up to 70% on employeerelated expenses by outsourcing work. By hiring a virtual assistant, you no longer have to pay fixed monthly salaries, and you get to work with the expertise of a trained professional, without having to pay for it. 16

Build a customer base - If you hire a virtual assistant to manage your social media, or help with your marketing strategies, you will cultivate and grow your customer base, because you will have someone who is experienced, that is focused on your customer growth. Scale your business - Whether you need help with a onetime job, or are taking the steps towards business expansion, outsourcing work is the way to go! Higher retention - When you establish a great professional relationship, it’s likely the people you outsource to will stay with you, instead of looking for other opportunities. Different Tasks You Can Outsource I always encourage people to take a few days and write down a list of tasks that they would feel comfortable handing off to someone else. Think of the different tasks you dread doing, or just simply push off until the last minute, but are important to help your business grow. Typical tasks a virtual assistant might perform include; scheduling appointments, making phone calls, making travel arrangements, and managing email accounts. Some virtual assistants specialize in offering graphic design, blog writing, bookkeeping, social media, and marketing services. As you can see, the possibilities of outsourcing work are endless, and it’s even okay to hire multiple people, who specialize in different areas, to help your business.

Checklist Before hiring a virtual assistant: If you’re ready to outsource work and take tasks off of your plate, I encourage you to take a deep breath, and plan a time to go through this checklist to help you determine if you are ready to outsource. Have you decided on which tasks to delegate? Have you outlined the steps needed to fulfill the task? Have you decided on the job role you need to hire? Have you considered any tasks you may outsource in the future? Do you understand your brand messaging enough to convey it to others? Are you ready to train your virtual assistant effectively? Ready to Outsource? Once you have all of these items checked off, it’s time to start looking for someone to outsource work to. Begin by asking your network if they have anyone they recommend. You can also utilize freelance apps and social media groups to help you find the right fit.

THINK OF THE DIFFERENT TASKS YOU DREAD DOING OR JUST SIMPLY PUSH OFF UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE, BUT ARE IMPORTANT TO HELP YOUR BUSINESS GROW. 17

LIVING UNLIMITED

19

SHEcorporatedMagazine.com

DO YOU FEEL TRULY FULFILLED? Do you have a sense that you have underperformed your true capabilities? If so, you are not alone. These, and many more questions of self, plague the overwhelming majority of individuals, and yet for some reason there is a failure to address the most relevant question: What is it that is limiting you from creating your best life yet? Perhaps you haven’t pondered this question, or maybe you have given it some cursory thought, but failed to identify the limiting factor that is holding you back. Either way, discovering the source of your limitation deserves your most focused attention. It is human nature to walk the path of least resistance, perpetuating an autopilot approach to living our lives. To ensure a truly fulfilled life experience, we have no alternative but to live life consciously. We must strive to reprogram our subconscious mind and actively create the best version of ourselves. SHEcorporatedMagazine.com

So what programs are you running in the background that are holding you hostage and preventing you from being truly fulfilled? The answer to this question will differ from person to person, however, I am here to impart basic insight that will allow you to possess a deeper understanding of how to answer this question. The reality is that the mind loves what’s familiar, not what is unfamiliar. As a result, our brains are wired to continue to take us back to what is familiar, because our subconscious mind is our “autopilot” mind. So whenever we are not consciously creating ourselves, and truly being present in each moment, we are reverting back to the past life experiences that are ingrained in our subconscious mind. The reality is that most of the challenges that we experience are the result of “unconscious” behaviors. Unfortunately, it is difficult to affect these unconscious behaviors through conscious effort alone, because both the conscious mind and subconscious minds have two completely different functions.

While the conscious mind is the rational part of our functioning and is the seat of our wishes, desires and aspirations, the unconscious/subconscious mind is full of both wanted and unwanted programs that guide us while in “autopilot”. The subconscious mind represents programming developed from our life experiences since childhood, and encapsulates, not only all that we have learned in that time, but in addition, our interpretation of the experiences of other people in our lives such as family, friends, colleagues, and even the media. As a result, the actions that we commonly label as “habits” kick in, and we become susceptible to the belief that we are limited in our lives, and are victims to circumstances that cannot be changed. The solution to this very complex problem is to develop the ability for the conscious mind and the subconscious mind to work in a more coherent fashion. This is accomplished through hypnosis, which is a proven and highly effective method by which direct communication can be had with the subconscious mind.

20

Hypnosis facilitates the ability to implement unique and targeted transformational strategies, designed to harmonize the relationship between the conscious and subconscious mind. It is an extraordinary tool for making fundamental changes at the subconscious level, to reverse deeprooted destructive patterns and beliefs. In other words, with proper hypnosis, an individual can replace the old limiting programming ingrained in the subconscious with new programming that aligns with and promotes a person’s true life fulfillment. Are you ready for limitless possibilities?
