Our Story

We are living the American dream. After years of Dana working in the corporate world and Laura running Finding Home on a smaller scale, we decided to take a chance on working as a team and a family and created Finding Home Farms.

So, for 14 years we were “backyard sugar makers” crafting just enough syrup to share with our  friends and neighbors. Those six weeks were always the happiest. Finding Home Farms has given our family the opportunity to grow beyond just those six weeks and share what we love best year-round, our crafted maple syrup, delicious recipes and creative home décor.

Now, we are going for the BIG dream – making a life AND a living doing what we love best – crafting maple syrup and creating a welcoming home.

This is more than a farm, it’s a lifestyle brand focused on making phenomenal maple syrup and designing outstanding food and home décor products brought to market with the help of only U.S. manufacturers.

You see, Dana grew up on a dairy farm in New Hampshire and his favorite time of the year was the 6 weeks of “sugaring” when they made maple syrup.

If we wouldn’t bring in into our own home, we don’t offer it. We use that approach as our guiding principal for creating new products and hope that with each new item we offer, we have the opportunity to be part of your journey towards finding home.

Dear Friends,

Did you know that Finding Home actually started in 2004 as a decorating business? Over time, I realized I wasn’t very good at it because I became friends with all of my clients and didn’t want to charge them. Then, in 2010, I became an unintentional blogger under the name Finding Home. My tag line was “the stories of the journey we are all on to Finding Home”. I enjoyed blogging, and still dabble in it from time to time, but my real dream had always been to create products. And now, I am lucky enough to be in business with my husband and share our products with you as Finding Home Farms. But that tag line is still with us and how we create our line. It is all about that journey to finding a sense of home and surrounding yourself with the people (and four legged friends) you care about most. And so yes, we make maple syrup and soy candles. But what we are really trying to make are the moments when you share your maple syrup. Maybe you are sharing breakfast on a lazy morning. Maybe you are mixing a cocktail with your dearest friends. And what you are doing when you are lighting that candle in your home? Are you sitting quietly with a favorite book, inviting friends over, or maybe it is just part of the everyday. These are the reasons we do what we do. To be just a little part of your journey towards Finding Home. This season, we bring you some new pieces of the story. Recipe cards (with our favorite cookie recipe included) so you can record and share your favorite recipes. We bring you 10 ways to make and share a maple cocktail. And of course, we bring you new scents of our soy candles and we even dressed up our maple syrup for the holidays.

We thank you so much for partnering with us and allowing us to be a part of your story,

Laura PA G E 5

& Dana

ABOUT OUR

organic

MAPLE SYRUP

Maple syrup in all of its glory is actually quite simple. Gather the sap from a maple tree, boil it to remove most of the water and the end result is delicious maple syrup. In practice, it is a little less romantic than that. It is not uncommon for someone making syrup at home, including ourselves, to step away from the stove for just a moment and find it boiling over the pot and all over the stove. Although Dana has done this is whole life and is a fourth generation “sugar maker”, here in New York, we started in our driveway with a makeshift set up and finished in our kitchen, usually very late at night. We made just enough to share with our neighbors who helped out and allowed us to tap their trees. Then we built the sugar house at our home and invested in a real “evaporator”. Over time, we outgrew that space and we are now in a larger sugar house and plan to stay where we are for a very long time. From the time we made our syrup in the driveway, to our smaller sugar house to when we invite people into our new sugarhouse, a lot of the questions are always the same. We thought it might be time to answer some of those here since as our partners, you too may have the same questions!

OUR FIRST SUGAR HOUSE

HOW DO YOU MAKE MAPLE SYRUP?

maple F A Q S

WHAT DO YOU ADD TO YOUR MAPLE SYRUP?

The romantic view of galvanized buckets on the trees is no longer the way it is done. In fact, It has been determined that the metal buckets are not the best way to gather sap. We now use tubing lines. A tap is inserted into the tree and it is attached to a tubing line that runs into larger one, and continues until it reaches the largest main line. That main line then runs to a gathering tank. We do use some vacuum technology as well to pull the sap down the lines, especially when there are geographic challenges. Once the tanks are full, we pump them into another tank on a truck and deliver it to the sugar house. It is once again pumped into the holding tank where it then goes through reverse osmosis (RO). When sap comes out of the tree, it is between 1.5% and 2.25% sugar. When it is officially “syrup it is 67% sugar. The RO machine removes some of the water right up front so that the boiling process can be a bit more efficient. There have been a lot of developments in terms of the capabilities of RO machines and how much water you can take out. However, we believe in not taking too much of the water out through the RO, as it would shorten the time the sap is boiled into syrup in the evaporator. It is in dedicating enough time to the boiling process that allows the natural flavor to develop and creates the hand crafted nature of our maple syrup. From the RO, it is gravity fed to our evaporator and boiled until it reaches the point of being 67% sugar. It is then drawn off the evaporator, filtered and stored in food grade stainless steel drums until it is bottled in our bottling room.

Nothing. It is really and truly 100% maple sap, boiled down.

HOW IS MAPLE SYRUP ORGANIC? In its nature, all maple syrup is organic. However, to be certified organic, there are several elements involved. First, you are inspected every year to determine that you are not using any unapproved cleaning chemicals, for your forestry stewardship and for tracking of all of your production. Each one of our bottles or jugs has a lot number on the bottom that indicates what date it was produced and what barrel it came from. This gives us full traceability of all of our production.

HOW DO YOU USE YOUR MAPLE SYRUP? Of course, we use it on our pancakes and waffles. But we also love to make cocktails with it (check out our new cocktail recipe kit on page 17). We use it as a part of marinades for chicken, pork, salmon and vegetables. When grilled, the syrup will caramelize and the flavor is amazing. We also add it to our coffee, our yogurt - and our favorite is to pair it with a mild cheddar cheese as a snack and perfect for tastings.
