COLEVEL refers to a residential unit or a typology that is
defined by f lexibility and social cohesion. Expressed through an architectural form that allows for the public/private, appropriation and reappropriation of shared space. New ways of living in urban areas necessitates a new relationship with leisure, living and work. COLEVEL is designed to question the rigidity of traditional housing forms and the inf luence of life stages on housing choice in Edmonton. COLEVEL imagines a different way of living that provides a model for intentional community; promoting well-being and health through built form. The concept is simple, intuitive and built on the principles of universal design allowing residents to understand and take ownership of the space regardless of their age, ability or status.

Located at the edge of the Spruce Avenue neighbourhood, the site is a bookend for the mature bungalows on 106 Street and 112 Avenue. We believe that the market for quality rental options in the area is underserved given the proximity to major institutional uses, rapid transit infrastructure and the downtown core. The richness of the area allowed us to suggest a completely different answer to what might exist on site.

The basic block is made up of two units stacked vertically. The block is defined over three levels with circulation allowing for highly efficient use of space and f lexibility internal to each suite. This creates the possibility for enormous variation and establishes a new typological system. The effect is a multiplicity of configurations transferrable to sites throughout the city.
