Know About Electrolytic Capacitors and Low ESR Capacitors Capacitors are passive electronic components, which mean they do not require additional electricity to operate unlike transistors. In a circuit the function of a capacitor is to maintain a voltage, or a "load", for a specific amount of time. The electric current causes the capacitor to store a voltage, which is known as "charging". The amount of time to charge and discharge depends on the amount of voltage a capacitor can store. Capacitance The amount of voltage / charge that a capacitor can store is known as its capacitance. This is a value measured in farad and is usually printed on the condenser. The value of the capacitance also determines the amount of time the capacitor takes to charge and discharge. That time factor is important, since certain capacitors must adapt to certain frequencies, or speeds of operation, in a circuit. Polarity In certain types of radial electrolytic capacitor the two conductive plates are polarized. This means that one plate is positive and the other is negative. Polarity is extremely important for connections in a circuit. If they are connected incorrectly, the polarized capacitors may malfunction or explode. Both electrolytic and tantalum capacitors are polarized and have printed marks on their surface. Electrolytic capacitors An aluminum electrolytic capacitor contains two conductive plates, an insulating layer and a liquid "electrolyte" like boric acid. Due to its chemical composition, one plate becomes the anode, or the plate positive, and the other becomes the cathode, or the negative plate. The basic electrolytic capacitor is made of aluminum oxide and has the appearance of a cylinder with two legs.
