SHBA – Where Business Works
Excellence – It starts at the top We all instantly recognize businesses that stand out above most of the other companies that essentially offer the same products and services. Our recognition might happen when we walk into their place of business, when we call them on the phone, when we see their advertising, when we notice their energetic, “can-do” attitude, and when we see that they are happy to be of service to their clients. Contrast that to the mediocre businesses we see where a “don’t-give-a-darn” attitude prevails, work is sloppy, promises are unkept. What makes the difference? Is it because there is some amazing chemical nutritional supplement added to the water cooler that magically creates better competency, more sparkling attitude, more energy and enthusiasm? I don’t think so! I’m positive that the difference between excellent companies and mediocre companies starts at the top, in the executive suite. And it makes no difference whether the CEO is head of a multinational conglomerate sitting in a lavish corner office or head of a two-person local service start-up company whose office is a second-hand desk in the corner of the workroom. The difference between excellence and meritocracy flows from the expectations and intentions communicated from that executive office and then transmitted throughout the company to staff, vendors, prospects, and clients. Those communications, let’s call them “Excellence Com-
munications,” inform everyone associated with the company with the purpose of the company, the expectations and the intentions of management. Over time they become integrated into the company culture which is expressed in every nook and cranny from hiring and training of new staff, to operations, production, marketing, advertising, customer service, and even product design (think Apple). Some “Excellence Communications” should be transmitted to everyone associated with the company, others are targeted to specific groups such as “high-end clients” or “production staff,” while still others are one-on-one. The most effective follow a consistent theme based on the company’s primary objectives. So, stand out for your excellence. To create excellence in your company start with Excellence Communications, make them focused on an Excellence Theme, Excellence starts at the top so get started… now! Shred Day at State Rep’s office SHRED DAY was held recently at State Representative Will Davis’ Office in Hazel Crest, IL Hundreds of people turned out to have their documents shredded. I want to alert you to an activity that the Village of South Holland has put together that will benefit you and your employees. A Farmers Market will be open every Friday from 10:00am - 3:00pm, through September 27th 2013. I would appreciate it if you would let your employees know about this. Maybe their lunch period would be a good time to gather some healthy fresh farm produce for their homes. Lunch is available there, too. Many people have asked for a Farmers Market and the Village has provided it. Let’s show the Village that their efforts are appreciated. OK? The Friends of Napoleon Harris are pleased to announce the 1st Annual Southland Family FunFest, to be held Thursday August 15 – Sunday, August 18, 2013. Family FunFest will be 4 days filled with Carnival Rides, Music, Entertainment, Fun, a Community Village and Sampling of the best Food in South Chicagoland. It will be held on 20 acres of land across from Beggars Pizza and next to the 147th Street Metra Electric stop in Harvey, IL. The site is in a very visible, high traffic area. Family FunFest is inviting the business community, municipal leaders and elected officials from throughout the greater Chicago Southland to attend this celebration. Family FunFest’s Community Village will promote awareness in the areas of health, education, ant-violence, and employment opportunities. The curse of frequency The most indisputable truth of outbound marketing: Frequency improves compliance.
Think about it!
If you promote something twice to one hundred people it will lead to more sales than if you promote it once to two hundred people. Frequency galvanizes attention and improves trust. (At least one kind of trust). The curse, of course, is that the best members of your audience, the ones who are listening the most carefully, have to be bored/annoyed at the messages that show up after they take action. Some people pledge the first day of pledge week, or buy the book the day it comes out. Those folks don’t want or need to hear the message again. Worse, frequency creates a culture of less engagement. Since we know that just about every important issue, opportunity or warning is going to be repeated a few times, we don’t engage as much. Why bother to listen, we say, they’ll just repeat it. The line between frequency and annoying is thin indeed. You believe in what you sell or you wouldn’t make it, wouldn’t devote yourself to it, wouldn’t sell it. At some point, though, the frequency of repetition stops being helpful enthusiasm and starts being selfish. And, alas, there’s no easy formula available. Jay Levinson likes to say that you should change your marketing not when the staff, your family or your agency tells you to--but when your accountant does. I’ll confess that I’m bad at this. I’m okay with gleefully saying, “I made this,” but not so good at saying it two or three or yes, 19 more times. I’d like to tell you that there’s a magic solution to not repeating yourself as a marketer, to respecting the best and brightest of your tribe and being able to merely whisper about your new project. This approach works great if you focus on creating scarce goods (popular fine artists, jazz stars and small restaurants don’t need to spend a lot of time reminding people about their soon to be sold out goods), but most of the time, as you work to reach the edges, frequency works.
