BUILDERS OVERVIEW - Spokane Home Builders Association

BRINGING VALUE TO OUR MEMBERS The Association has gotten off to a great start in 2021 and, while there are still many unknowns, we will be delivering many great programs and have a number of networking events on tap to deliver strong value to our membership. We are aware that the current housing demand has been a financial boom to a majority of our members, but it has also limited the amount of time members can devote to Association activities. I am seeing members putting in long hours and working tirelessly to meet the housing needs created by the current onslaught of buyers moving into the region. From all I have read and heard, all signs show that 2021 will bring continued demand for both new construction homes and rental units. In this market, finding the perfect balance of offerings to meet the

diverse needs of our members is a challenge that has only been exacerbated by the time limitations facing our members and the continued challenges of COVID. I am very grateful to have a strong leadership team and several new staff members that are bringing new ideas and energy to the office every day. I hope you are seeing the fruits of our efforts and get to know the members of my team at an upcoming event or over the phone. I am very proud of our early returns and know we have the ability to accomplish much more in the future. One of our key initiatives was launched this year after a great deal of planning and it would have been hard to miss. Following upon last year’s efforts to update the look of the SHBA, we launched a co-op TV branding campaign in partnership with 6 Associa-

tion members. The ads began in late January and will run through March. This $50,000+ buy has generated a lot of industry and community excitement, driven traffic to our website/social media pages and has created interest from homebuyers and our membership. All of this marketing delivers upon our goal to raise the Association’s presence in the community in support continued on page 5

PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS WITH SHBA The SHBA provides many opportunties for advertisement of your business. There is ad space available on shba.com, in our quarterly printed newsletter (Builders Overview), and in our weekly digital newsletter (Builders News Brief). There are still sponsorships available for our 2021 events as well. Interested in advertising with us? Contact Taylor Clanagan at taylorc@shba.com. Interested in sponsoring an event? Contact Joel White at jwhite@shba.com or Jennifer Thomas at jthomas@shba.com.

of our advocacy efforts and our Find a Pro initiative. If you would like to be a part of this effort, we are planning to run a second campaign later this year. You will also see an improved presence in the community with high quality content on our website and social media through our “House to Home” show. Members are being regularly interviewed to share information on various construction topics while also tackling serious issues such as the mental health concerns facing our workforce. Regulatory challenges continue to face our industry and add to the cost of a home. We fought hard to push back the implementation of the new energy codes and continue efforts to educate our members on strategies to mitigate the costs they create. Our leadership team and staff have also been putting pressure on local jurisdictions to improve their building and land use permitting timelines and believe recent changes should create noticeable improvements. We are also working to cultivate stronger leaders to run for public office and recently held a virtual candidate training school with over 20 participants. The program was built in partnership with our local Association of Realtors and featured panelists including Karl Eckhart from NAHB, the campaign manager for Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers and the political director for Washington Realtors®.

The lack of skilled workers has also been a huge challenge facing our members and we have not given up on our efforts to address the issue. Our Education Committee is working with the Mead School District to implement residential construction curriculum in their schools. With funding support from NAHB and our Association, it looks like they will implement the curriculum in their middle schools this fall with a plan to continue the training into their high schools in future years. Our Events committee is working hard to bring back in person events to provide networking opportunities for our Associate members. We were able to hold our Annual Installation of Officers and Awards night in January at Northern Quest Resort and will be holding other in-person events in the next few months. While we are working hard to create safe in-person events we also know that expanding our virtual offerings will be important even post COVID. We have allocated significant funds to modify space in our building to create a classroom/meeting room with new screens, microphones, & speakers to allow for off-site attendee participation. This project will also create additional office space for future growth. As you can see we are busy and hope you will continue to support the SHBA with your membership investment and engagement in our various events and programs. If you want to learn more about how the Association is working on your behalf, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

BUILDERS OVERVIEW - Spokane Home Builders Association

GET INVOLVED - UTILIZE SHBA BENEFITS AND MEET YOUR FELLOW MEMBERS I am very grateful for the trust our members have put into me by electing me as President of the SHBA this year. While I have been involved on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee the past two years, the role of the President carries a much heavier weight. I must admit, I didn’t fully understand the scope of the Association and all of our activities before getting engaged. It has been an eye opening experience as I have learned about the many benefits available to our members. While most of my knowledge comes from my experience at the local level, I am also getting to learn more about the work of our State and National Associations as they fight to advocate for our members. I will assure you that you are getting great value for your dues investment. What really struck me was the willingness of so many of my fellow members to give of their time to serve. Like me, they are all trying to keep up with the constant demands in their own businesses in this hot housing market. These volunteers give of their time to support the local building industry and their fellow members. I’m very proud to work with a great group of leaders on our Board of Directors and have listed our Board members in this edition of the Builder’s Overview. I hope you will have the opportunity to meet them as they hold a great deal of knowledge about the SHBA and the construction industry.

NETWORKING IS KEY - IN-PERSON EVENTS ARE COMING BACK As a small custom home builder I was focused on my own business and didn’t have a broad network within our industry. My involvement has allowed me to become acquainted with my peers and gained access to many great business leaders. I have greatly benefited from the knowledge they have shared and the leadership training that has been made available to me. This past year was a challenge for the Association as we weren’t able to deliver many of our networking events that deliver similar opportunities to many members. I made it a priority to provide this same access to our members and I have worked along with our Board to move forward with COVID compliant in-person events this year. I look forward to visiting with you at one of these events and learning more about your business.I also hope you will consider getting involved as a volunteer as we can use your support. If you need information on how you can best access the benefits included with your membership, please get ahold of me or a member of

BUILDERS OVERVIEW - Spokane Home Builders Association

LOOKING AHEAD: WHAT’S NEXT FOR ADVOCACY IN 2021 There are two main ways to approach government relations. One is to persuade those currently in positions of influence to enact policies that help our mem-

these costs and what they can do about it. We must work to fill vacancies on key committees (like the City of Spokane Planning Commission) with people who understand the

2022 and beyond received the information they need to get started on the right foot. This crucial step will help achieve our goal of helping an industry- and business-

bers and our mission. The other is to find candidates who align with our values and help them get elected to office. Parallel to that, we must also help educate the community on important issues and mount public pressure to achieve our goals. In line with this strategy, four key goals have emerged for the Government Affairs and Political Affairs Committees for 2021: to improve government efficiency and reduce regulation, to win at least one Spokane City Council race this fall, to increase PAC activity in campaigns, and to increase opportunities for members to engage with elected officials.

industry. That means you! We must also be active in providing feedback on government efforts like the City of Spokane Housing Action Plan and its newly formed Housing Action Subcommittee. The lack of understanding also drives efforts like the Builders Series | Energy Code Impact Panel where our members, in partnership with Avista Utilities, shared the true impact and agenda behind the Energy Codes and a shift from energy efficiency cost savings to carbon reduction cost increases. Driving this conversation is central to positioning our Association as experts on housing policy.

friendly candidate win not only on the Spokane City Council this fall, but all around our region.

It’s no secret that Spokane currently faces a housing crisis. The rising cost of land, lumber, and government regulation prices many potential buyers out of an ability to purchase a new construction home. Reigning in rising costs will take all of us working to help our neighbors and public officials understand what drives

The beginning of this year also saw progress in our effort to identify, recruit, train, equip, support, and get elected candidates to public office. A first-in-the-country virtual candidate training series in partnership with NAHB brought 25-plus candidates in the Spokane area together to hear from campaign experts about what it takes to run a successful campaign. Candidates for municipal races this fall and prospective candidates for

It’s not just finding quality candidates and giving them good information, the SHBA-PAC also intends to support candidates with ongoing strategic advice, tangible support, and independent expenditures. After filing week in May, a candidate interview panel will convene to vet candidates for endorsement. However, we intend to back candidates with the resources they need to succeed. That’s where our membership really steps up. By giving to the PAC, your dollars go to ensure continued on page 9

that our preferred candidates have what they need to win and that you have an ally in office. We are excited to roll out the Golden Hammer Club this year to provide special perks to different levels of PAC donors. A new spin on previous Government Affairs meetings we call ‘Politics on Tap’ launches soon. On March 25th at 4pm all SHBA members are invited to attend this monthly event where attendees will have a chance to hear from an elected official, talk about current issues, and enjoy food and beverage. This is also a great opportunity to meet the incoming 2021 Government Affairs Committee Chair, Jim Warner, and learn about how you can participate in the Government Affairs or Political Affairs Committees. To get all the details and register, make sure you go to shba.com/events where you can see Politics on Tap and all the other classes and events of the Spokane Home Builders Association. I look forward to working with you to achieve our 2021 goals and would love to hear from you. Please reach out to me at any time via email at isaiahp@shba.com or my cell phone at (509)992-6684.

HOW TO LEVERAGE YOUR MEMBERSHIP IN 2021 Hello SHBA Members! Remember a year ago when March Madness took on a whole new definition and the governor shut us down for 21 days to help flatten the curve?! What a year this has been… Business as usual is a thing of the past. In this COVID era many of us have been faced with the opportunity to adapt - or fall behind. The mentality of membership at SHBA is no different. My number one goal is that your membership with the Spokane Home Builders Association becomes one of the most beneficial assets to your business. I am aware that as a business owner you have had to adjust and I will guarantee that, like you, I am working tirelessly to pivot our efforts to make sure that we are not only meeting your needs, but helping open doors to other partnerships that will help you thrive in this season.

JENNIFER THOMAS Membership Services Director jthomas@shba.com

Here are the top 5 ways to leverage your membership in 2021: • Earn refunds on your L&I premiums with ROII. This is the only way to earn back a portion of the premiums you pay into L&I. I know it sounds too good to be true - but it’s not! • Get on TV with the Co-Branding Campaign. Advertise your business on TV & Cable without having to foot the entire bill. Being on TV is far more affordable than you might think. • Feature your skill or product on House 2 Home with Isaiah Paine & Clyde Haase. (View episodes at https://www. shba.com/house2home) • Promote your business by hosting a monthly Lunch & Learn or networking event, or by teaching a class. • Grow your business with quarterly strategy & goal setting workshops conducted by Ted Schmidt of ActionCOACH. (Free for members. June 4th, Sept 3rd & December 3rd.) I look forward to connecting with you and building the success of the industry together.

BUILDERS OVERVIEW - Spokane Home Builders Association

TALK ABOUT IT TUESDAY: BREAKING THE STIGMA ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH IN CONSTRUCTION Over the years, the stigma surrounding mental health has started to dwindle. Many industries have begun to make efforts to raise awareness and offer support. Mental health in the workplace should be high priority; companies have started to increase their promotion and support for a healthier work environment. Unfortunately, the construction industry is still one of the leading industries for depression and mental illness. SHBA Next is aware of the rising concern over the mental health stigma in our industry and have championed the conversation to help break down those walls. Working together with Government Affairs Director, Isaiah Paine (and host of H2H) and Dr. Sean Smitham we have recorded a series of conversations called Talk About it Tuesday (TAT). TAT provides tools and insights to help you have an open conversation around mental health; as well as helpful tips on how to bring balance back into your life. The latest TAT video series, Leadership Under Pressure, is about leadership in the workplace. Isaiah and Dr. Smitham sat down with Deacon Band and Josh Terris from Band Construction to discuss practical tips for navigating the stress of uncertainty. With the unprecedented time we’ve had to face recently, it is necessary now more than ever to offer support to your employees and ensure they have the tools needed to live a healthy life.

Mental health is a very important topic that needs to be talked about. We shouldn’t shy away from opening up about how mental health and how it affects everyone almost every day. Band Construction knows how important it is and we check in with our guys weekly, if not twice week, to make sure all our guys know we are important they are to us. Talk About It Tuesday is a great way to start the conversation in the right direction. I want to change the way construction deals mental health on a daily basis. I look forward to Tuesdays! - Josh Terris, Band Construction

WELCOME NEW SHBA ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT KELSEY QUICK All the way from Montana comes our new Front Desk Administrator, Kelsey Quick! After visiting the Spokane area for years, Kelsey finally made the move with her family in 2018. Soon after, she pursued her lifelong interest into Real Estate and became a Licensed Broker in 2019. In the two years she has been an agent, Kelsey realized how much Spokane needs new homes. This drove her to begin pursuing the building side of Real Estate and led her to begin looking into a degree in Architecture. However, before the school year could begin, she came across the Spokane Home Builders Associations job opening and eagerly joined our team. Kelsey hopes she can help our team, as well as our members, make a lasting difference in our beautiful city. When she's not at work, Kelsey enjoys spending time with her husband and (almost) two-year-old daughter, Preséa. Together, they enjoy art, games, and baking.
