ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Why Giltz was selected: Giltz did a little bit of everything in leading WWS to a 7-4 nonconference win Saturday against Glenbard South.

What are your thoughts about your team’s start to the season? I like the energy and all around, every guy is working hard. Our practices are intense. I think we have the potential to be really productive this year.

After playing center field last year, you are now at shortstop. Have you played that position before? How do you like it? I kind of started there when I first started playing like 10 years ago, and I got one game there when I was in eighth grade. It’s different, and it brings back old memories. It’s a lot more action. I like it, you feel more involved, and it’s a lot easier to stay focused.

West Chicago Already having passed their win total from a year ago, the Wildcats are off to a strong start this spring. West Chicago improved to 6-2 on the young season with a 3-2 win Saturday over Oswego. The squad had just one hit but scored single runs in the second, third and fifth frames. Grant Hosticka made that run support stand up, allowing just four hits in a complete-game effort. The Wildcats lost 13-7 Friday to Geneva in Upstate Eight Conference action. On April 10, West Chicago defeated Elgin 10-0 in five innings. Connor Dall had four hits and two RBIs, Austin Kordik had three hits and Jon Michiels added two hits and an RBI. Hosticka also knocked in a pair of runs. That offensive support was more than enough for Fred Gosbeth, who allowed just one hit while striking out six. A day earlier, the squad beat St. Edward 14-5. Kordik had two hits and four RBIs, Michiels drove in three and Antonio Solis had two RBIs. On April 8, the Wildcats defeated St. Charles East 2-0

as Dave Kordik struck out six in six innings pitched while also knocking in a run at the plate. Michiels had two of his team’s five hits.

St. Francis The Spartans defeated Chicago Christian 4-2 April 10 in Suburban Christian conference action. Matt Kelly allowed two hits and one run in 4 2/3 innings, and Zach Prociuk, Jack Ciombor and Chris Smith all had two hits. A day earlier, St. Francis beat Aurora Christian 4-1 behind the 4-for-4 performance at the plate by Jason Sullivan, who also scored three runs. Pitchers Ryan Hodgett and Michael O’Keefe combined to allow no earned runs and just three hits.

Wheaton Academy The Warriors lost 19-1 Saturday against Benet. Brett Albaugh went 2-for-2 with a run scored, and Jake Lindstedt added a double and RBI. Two days earlier, Wheaton Academy lost 6-4 to Aurora Central Catholic, despite home runs by Ryan Beck and Luis Ramos. Lindstedt added a hit and RBI, and Austin Ebeling contributed a double.

We’ve kind of struggled offensively. Our pitchers have been lighting it up and throwing gems everyday but

we haven’t had the support behind them. It was nice to put up a seven spot.

Wheaton North’s baseball team came up one run short Saturday, falling 4-3 to highly regarded Lemont in a nonconference game. Ben Cary was the hardluck losing pitcher, holding the Indians’ potent offense to just four hits in six innings of work. Offensively, Greg Scandora was 2-for-4 with a double and Andrew Slivinski was 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. The Falcons also dropped a 17-2 decision Friday to Benet as the Redwings exploded for 11 runs in the fifth inning. Slivinski had two hits in the loss and Scandora had an RBI. On April 9, Wheaton North beat York 10-8 in a nonconference game. The Falcons scored eight runs in the third inning and then added single runs in the fifth and seventh frames. Greg Sells had a home run and drove in four runs against York. Scandora had two hits, including a triple, to go along with an RBI, and Michael Mannix was 1-for-1 with three walks and three runs scored. Charles Robin also contributed a triple, an

RBI and run scored.

ERIC GILTZ

Wheaton Warrenville South junior Eric Giltz might have switched positions this spring, but he is having the same kind of impact for the Tigers. On Saturday, he had two hits, including a bunt single, two stolen bases and a pair of runs against Glenbard South. The shortstop also played stellar defense, starting a 6-4-3 double play in the fifth inning. Giltz, the Glen Ellyn Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life sports reporter Scott Schmid about the offense breaking out and his transition from the outfield to the infield.
