Solar energy class is offered May 25 near Oregon Anyone who is interested in knowing more about solar electricity or is thinking about a home solar installation is invited to attend a class hosted by the Illinois Renewable Energy Association on Saturday, May 25, at the IREA Headquarters, 1230 E. Honey Creek Rd., Oregon. The class will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1230 E. Honey Creek Rd. Oregon. All equipment will be provided. An experienced PV installer who has completed more than 600 systems in this part of Illinois will be the instructor. He will present a clear explanation of what solar electricity is and how it works. After the presentation, he

will lead the class in assembling an actual PV system meant for home use, wiring it and watching it work. The group will then disassemble it. The couple who live with the installation at the center, which is their home, will share their experiences in living with PV. The fee is $20 for IREA members and $40 for non-members, which includes membership. An optional lunch will be provided for $6. Those who prefer to bring their own lunch may do so. BYRON FOREST PRESERVE

Barrick Oaks Homestead tour on Saturday, May 18 The Byron Forest Preserve District will offer a free guided tour of its rarely visited Barrick Oaks Homestead Preserve on Saturday, May 18 starting at 8:30 a.m. Superintendent of Education Mark Herman will lead the walk beginning at the preserve’s gravel parking lot located at 3494 Oak Grove Road just off of Tower Road north of Byron. This scenic, little known, 230 acre preserve features old oak savannas, limestone bluffs and a beautiful wetland section of East Fork Middle Creek that features an active beaver colony. The Barrick Oaks Homestead Preserve is another of the Byron Forest Preserve District’s hidden gems. There will be uneven terrain, moderate hiking and some wet areas. This free program is recommended for ages 10 and up. Advance registration is required by calling the Byron Forest Preserve District at 815 234-8535, extension 200.

Ganymedes Vintage Base Ball Club Home Opener – Sunday, May 19 The Oregon Ganymedes Vintage Base Ball Club will have its 2019 home opener on Sunday, May 19 at 1 p.m. against the Somonauk Blue Stockings at the Chana School Museum Field located at Oregon Park East, 201 North River Road in Oregon The nine inning contest will be played by the 1858 earliest rules of the game of base ball (it was two words then) that features vintage uniforms, no gloves, underhand pitching, one bounce outs and fast Oregon Ganymedes’ Kevin Stafford hits for extra bases against Creston on May 5.
