S tarved Rock Visitor Center STARVED ROCK Consistently voted the #1 Attraction in The State of Illinois, Starved Rock features 18 unique canyons, 14 of which produce stunning seasonal waterfalls. Guests can explore a vast network of more than 13 miles of trails, where they can soak in aweinspiring vistas and encounter remarkable plants and animals. The fun at Starved Rock doesn’t’ stop there, the park’s historic lodge and informative visitors center offer special programs like guided hikes, trolley tours, presentations from wildlife experts, live concerts, dining and much more!

Check list Here are seven stops you should be sure to visit on your next trip to the park! STOP 1: The Starved Rock Visitors Center The Starved Rock Visitor Center is the perfect place to start your State Park adventure! Here, you’ll find interactive educational displays, free videos on the park’s history, hiking maps and a bookstore! While you’re there, be sure to check out Trailhead Concessions and Gifts for a great selection of hiking provisions. STOP 2: Starved Rock From the Visitors Center, take a short 0.3-mile hike towards the park’s namesake, Starved Rock. The summit is home to one of the best views in the entire park, where you can marvel at the Illinois River, or watch birds plunge for fish near the base of the Illinois Waterways Lock and Dam. STOP 3: St. Louis Canyon Just a few minutes to the west of the Visitors Center, off IL-178, you’ll find the parking lot for St. Louis Canyon. At the end of this 0.4-mile hike you’ll be treated to a beautiful box canyon, complete with a tall waterfall and hidden alcove that runs behind it. Even when falls aren’t in season, the canyon’s towering walls of intricate sandstone make for quite the sight.

STOP 4: French Canyon One of the easiest hikes in the parks just so happens to lead to one of the most beautiful canyons! Located just 0.4-miles southeast of the Visitors Center, French Canyon offers a towering 45-foot tall waterfall during the rainy season, and beautifully eroded Saint Peters sandstone all year round. After a rainfall, admire the colorful streaks left on the canyon walls by the mineral-rich water.

EAGLE WATCHING

Every winter, a small stretch of the Illinois River, between Starved Rock State Park and the Illinois Waterways Visitors Center, becomes a temporary condominium for a convocation of eagles! These majestic creatures, with wingspans upward of eight feet in length, pay Starved Rock a visit every year when more northern state’s rivers and lakes begin to freeze.

Located about a mile from the Parkman’s Plain parking lot, LaSalle Canyon boasts a wide picturesque canyon and jutting sandstone shelf, suspended 20 feet off the ground. Best of all, your hike to canyon will wind you along the Illinois river, providing you with a great view of the river and chance to see some rare birds and foliage.

STOP 6: Water Cruise or Trolley Tour If you’re looking to get out of the canyons and take a break from hiking, or if you have a party member looking for a less active excursion, you can reserve a spot aboard Starved Rock’s Eagle One Water Cruise (running Jun. – Oct.) or take a Trolley Tour (running year-round). These narrated tours merge history and sighting seeing for a truly one of a kind view of Starved Rock.

base of the Starved Rock Lock, is commonly used by these eagles as a non-iced over section of the river, makes Plum island particularly desirable real estate for these feathered fliers. During their wintering season, which lasts anywhere between December and March, you’ll often spot these eagles circling above broken ice, trying to find their next meal, or roosting among the island’s tallest trees. To see these eagles for yourself, head to the Lover’s Leap Overlook, the peak of Starved Rock or the aptly named Eagle Cliff Overlook. Be sure to bring a pair of binoculars or a camera with a large tele-photo lens. If you left your binoculars at home, don’t fret, Starved Rock Visitors Center also loans out complementary pairs at the front desk.

STOP 7: The Starved Rock Lodge and Conference Center After a full day of hiking and sightseeing, cap your trip off with a stay at the Starved Rock Lodge and Conference Center. This historic hotel nestled in nature, features a Cliffside panorama of the Illinois river, an indoor pool complex, on-site restaurants and a beautiful rustic lounge. You can choose from historic lodge accommodations, spacious hotel rooms or charming log cabins.

WATERFALLS AND CANYONS

Most of Starved Rock’s beautiful sandstone canyons produce waterfalls after periods of heavy rainfall, but St. Louis, LaSalle, French, Wildcat, Ottawa, and Kaskaskia Canyons are considered to be among the best. St. Louis canyon boasts the only spring-fed waterfall in the park, resulting in much longer waterfalls, while LaSalle canyon (despite being much shorter than the other waterfalls) is the only one in the park you can walk behind while the waterfall is in action! The French canyon waterfall is conveniently located just a short 0.4 mile hike form the Visitor Center, while Wildcat is hands down the largest in the park, a gargantuan waterfall exceeding 70 feet in height.

DOGS

Many blogs cite Starved Rock as one of the top destinations for hiking with your dog in the Midwest. The River Trail, that’s conveniently located off the recently

Waterfalls

restored Parkman’s Plain lot, is one of the more popular canine hikes. The dogfriendly outdoor Veranda at the Lodge even offers a special “doggy menu”. Dogs must be leashed inside the park.

OVERLOOKS

Starved Rock’s Canyons and Overlooks provide wonderful views of towering sandstone cliffs, lush vegetation and the mighty Illinois River. Photo-worthy sites like Council Bluffs Overhang, a massive sandstone alcove once used by Native American tribes for ceremonies, and the titular Starved Rock, once home to the French explorers famed fort Saint Louis des Illinois, now offers inspiring panorama views of the river valley below.

Matthiessen th State J

ust to the South-West of Starved Rock, you’ll find Matthiessen State Park. This picturesque stretch of nature takes you from wild flower lined prairie trails to the depths of Ice Age era dells, complete with rushing waterfalls and mossy canyon walls. Matthiessen feels untouched by time, it’s mile-long canyons carved out by centuries of erosion, exposing some fascinating otherworldly geology. Founded in the tail end of the 19th century by LaSalle zinc tycoon Frederick William Matthiessen as a private retreat, it was originally known as Deer Park, earning this name thanks in no small part to its enormous deer population. Even after it’s name change, Matthiessen still remains one of your best chances at spotting some wildlife on your trip to LaSalle County.

Matthiessen’s trail system includes options for both novice and experienced hikers, allowing all park patrons to enjoy views of the grand Cascade Falls and the jaw dropping Giants Bathtub. The trails above the bluffs are graded, relaxed enough for any novice hiker or family. You’ll likely see more than just fellow hikers on these trails, Matthiessen also features some of the best horseback riding paths in the Starved Rock area.

Waterfalls

While the two trails that snake through the dells are a bit of a challenge, they also afford adventurous hikers an unmatched view of some geological marvels. Home to no less than seven falls, including a large 45-foot drop that separates the upper and lower dells, Matthiessen’s water features are active dependent on how much rain the area has seen. This makes spring an ideal time to explore the park! Beyond a few sets of stairs to enter the dells and a handful of trails surrounding the brim of the canyon, much of your park exploring will be done by hopping across stepping stones, splashing through shallow creeks, and shuffling along narrow sandstone-lined pathways. With its narrow sandstone canyons and dense tree canopy, Matthiessen feels in many ways like the perfect counterpoint to Starved Rock’s winding trails and steep bluff vistas.

Illinois River

BUFFALO ROCK State L

ocated on the North banks of the Illinois River, Buffalo Rock State Park combines rustic prairie hiking with some of the best cliffside views in LaSalle County. Throughout this park’s storied past, it has been the home of an Indiginous American tribe, used as a camp for a religious sect, and even a tuberculosis sanatorium during the 1910’s. These days, it’s a hidden gem state park that brings together the disparate worlds of fine art and conservation.

The State Park is located approximately 3 miles west of Ottawa, Illinois, and has long been a favorite picnic area, as well as an ideal terrain for the beginner hikers.

Buffalo Rock features two trails that offer wildly different park experiences: The River Bluff Trail snakes you along the Illinois River (featuring plenty of great bird watching opportunities), while the Woodland Trail gives you an up-close look at trees, wildlife, and the Effigy Tumuli mounds. Made by visionary “earthworks” artist Michael Heizer, these five enormous animals resemble a snake, turtle, catfish, frog and water strider. These eathworks, which can really only be seen from aerial photography today, were inspired by Indiginious American burial grounds, several of which can be found in the Illinois River region.

Hiking Tips Buffalo Rock is also home to two live American Bison, Cocoa and Pebbles. The pair can be seen in their grazing pen, located across from the park’s baseball diamond. TIP: An early (8 a.m.) arrival rewards guests with an opportunity to see the Buffalo get fed and, occasionally, morning fog on the Illinois River.

Stay On The Trails

Venturing off trails at any of Illinois’ State Parks is strictly forbidden, and for good reason. There are countless sharp drop offs, ravines, and dangerous plants off the trails. Admire the beautiful sights from only the clearly marked trails.

Dress Right

Wear well fitted shoes, preferably hiking boots with good traction. Dress appropriately for the weather, always anticipate it being cooler inside the canyons at Starved Rock and the dells at Matthiessen.

Bring Provisions

Hiking can be exhausting, and many hikers underestimate how much water they’ll drink out on the trails. Plan ahead and bring extra water and trail snacks for you and your fellow hikers.

Bring A Phone

These parks are large, and you can go long distances without seeing another hiker while out on the trails. Be sure to bring a cell phone so you can call for help in case of an emergency.

Am erican Bi son Find enjoylasallecounty on

Don’t Litter

Do your part to keep the parks looking nice! There are ample waste receptacles scattered throughout the parks, be sure to keep any waste you generate on the trail inside your bag until you find one.

Bring A Leash

Pets are always welcomed at LaSalle County’s state parks, but they must be kept on a leash, for their own safety.

Illini State Park N

estled along the Illinois River in Marseilles, Illini State Park is a serene hidden gem offering guests the perfect place to hold a picnic or family gathering. This 510-acre park boasts not only incredible views of the river, but also 100+ picturesque campsites, a boat ramp for easy river access and ample places for anglers to fish for crappie, bass, bluegill and catfish. Be sure to pay Illini a visit in Winter, when the park’s ice skating pool has frozen over, and the large sledding hill is covered in snow. During this season, you can also cross-country ski on the park’s flat graded trails, then warm-up in their cozy shelter. During the Fall, the park’s a birder’s paradise, attracting scores of migrating songbirds like Vireos, Warblers and Thrushes.

You’ll also find The Illinois Fallen Soldiers Tree Memorial, a unique living monument celebrating the lives of the soldiers lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. This site features over 250 Oak trees spead across a 2.5-acre plot of land, each celebrating a fallen soilder.

TRAIL SYSTEMS THAT ARE SHORT ON DISTANCE, HIGH ON SCENERY AND EXPERIENCE

N

ot all hikes are created equal. And that’s a good thing.

LaSalle County is a region best seen on foot, and it boasts some of the state’s premier hiking — famously, the 13-mile trail system at Starved Rock State Park and the 61.5-mile mega-trek of the Illinois and Michigan Canal towpath.

But you can’t judge a hike by its length. Some of the county’s smaller trail systems are packed with nature and attractions for hikers of all experience levels to enjoy. Whether you’re in the mood to discover a lot of scenery in a short amount of time (and distance), looking for a small dose of nature between other activities, or hunting for easy trails for the youngest members of a family, there are options for everyone. Consider adding some of these mini-hikes during your visit.

The falls are accessible through a simple stroll, but for more adventurous visitors, the park features a system of 12 trails, most of which are half-mile loops or shorter. Spring Lake Nature Park’s trail system is an ideal option for families seeking easy access to nature. Six of the trails are mostly level, which are easy for young children to travel. For families with older children or adults, there are additional trails with steeper inclines, such as Overlook Trail or the narrow, sharp-descending Beaver Run path. The uphill climbs to ridges and overlooks can be accomplished in less than two minutes, with the rest of the trail on level ground.

That’s the call of the falls.

A highlight of the park is its swinging bridge. Like the falls, the bridge is accessible within a short walk from the parking lot. The shallow waters of Eagle Creek can be seen through the slats of the bridge, which bounces underfoot as hikers cross to reach six of the trail loops.

Spring Lake Falls is among the park’s bestloved and most scenic locations — and it’s less

Creek-crossers should be aware: The swinging bridge comes with a set of three

rules. No. 1, no more than two people crossing at a time; No. 2, no running; and No. 3, absolutely no bouncing. On the trails, hikers will quickly and frequently encounter the two W’s: woods and water. Eagle Creek snakes in and out of the 37-acre nature area, repeatedly crossing paths with visitors. The wooded areas are home to more than 85 bird species, as well as deer, foxes, coyotes, beavers, snakes, frogs and wild flora. Hikers shouldn’t miss out on a photo opportunity with Spring Lake’s mightiest flora, which has its own trail. Big Tree Trail loops around a more than two-century-old cottonwood tree, which lives up to the name Big Tree. Horses and bikes can be ridden on the trails, and leashed dogs are welcome at the park, which is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. Portable bathroom facilities are available in the parking area. Where is the lake? Despite the park’s name, there is no lake at the nature area. A springfed lake once existed in the area, and in the 1800s a dam was constructed to maintain the water level for commercial ice production in pre-refrigerator years. When ice was no longer a commercial venture, the dam was dismantled, creating the park’s current system

Known for its wildflowers, the trail cuts through the heavy tree cover on the river›s eastern edge. The entrance along North 18th Road, locally known as Leonore Road, can be easy to miss. Those traveling westbound from Route 23 will want to watch their odometers. The gravel parking area is 3.1 miles down the road; if you cross the Sandy Ford Bridge, you’ve gone too far. For eastbound travelers, the Sandy Ford Bridge is a sign you’re nearing the entrance. Motorists will pass East 1391st Road on their right; immediately after will be the entrance to the land and water preserve on the left. Watch the signs; Visitors should pay attention to signs posted at the state land and water preserves. Certain times of year, the sites are closed to hikers and open only to hunters. Due to spring turkey season, the locations are closed to hikers until May 15.

of meandering streams and falls.

DAYTON BLUFFS PRESERVE 2997 Route 71, Ottawa

From the moment you turn onto the gravel road three-quarters of a mile from the Interstate 80 exit, you’ll leave behind the sense of city and interstate. Once you step out of the car and embark onto the trails, you may instead discover a sense of the sacred. The approximately five-mile trail system of Dayton Bluffs Preserve provides a trifecta of prairie, woodlands, and historical significance. Sunny trails branching off from the parking lot outline acres of open prairie, which eventually branch into the preserve’s 154 forested acres. It’s along the narrow dirt paths of the woods where hikers can commune with history rooted deeper and older than the surrounding trees. Dayton Bluffs is home to Native American burial mounds along the preserve’s northwestern ridge trail. The path leads through tree cover and foliage, eventually opening up to a view of the Fox River to the left and 14 burial mounds to the right. It’s an area worth hiking slowly — an unknowing eye moving too quickly can mistake the more than 1,000-year-old mounds as rolling landscape and miss them on a first pass.

LaSalleGuide_2020.indd 19

A trail loop at the park’s northeastern edge also introduces hikers to another patch of hallowed history: the Daniels Cemetery, a pioneer cemetery dating back to the 1830s. A picnic table and rest area are located near the site. Other than mowed paths through the prairie, the scenery has a sense of being largely untouched. Hikes taken shortly after rainfall reveal far more deer, fox and coyote tracks than human footprints. Wildflowers and flora also grow close to the trails — the preserve has more than 160 species of plants. Like Spring Lake, Dayton Bluffs offers a waterside view. The preserve’s steepest trail leads from the burial mound site down to the river. The river trail also can be accessed from the south, which has less extreme elevation. The park features five water cascades along the southern trails as well. Dayton Bluffs is a more rugged hike than Spring Lake, with some narrow trails, steep treks, ridges and ravines. However, the trails pose only a moderate challenge to older children and adults — the preserve can be hiked in a morning or afternoon with time to spare. Leashed dogs are welcome at the preserve. A portable bathroom is available in the parking area. Dayton Bluffs is open yearround from sunrise to sunset.

 FOX RIVER WALK, OTTAWA: This paved path stretches from Ottawa’s botanical downtown, through Fox River Park, to the Illinois & Michigan Canal towpath. The River Walk, which can be accessed from the western end of Jefferson Street downtown or from Fox River Park, curves along the banks of the Fox River, north of its confluence with the Illinois River. The park features disc golf, a playground and a splash pad. The 0.9-mile walk is wheelchair accessible and stroller-friendly.  HOPALONG CASSIDY TRAIL, STREATOR: The 1.47-mile trail begins at a trailhead park on the corner of Broadway and Madison streets, then follows the Vermilion River into light woods within city limits, ending at West First Street. (There is no parking at the First Street trailhead, so it›s best to begin at the Broadway Street park.) The packed-dirt path leads through several sunny areas with wildflowers and pollinators, as well as shaded wooded stretches that include a scenic footbridge over a creek. The trailhead park includes restrooms, a playground and exercise equipment.  BAKER PARK, PERU: The man-made Baker Lake features a 1-mile loop around its banks. The paved path is easy for walking and jogging and also is wheelchair accessible and stroller friendly. The park also offers fishing, picnic areas, a playground, shelters, restrooms and a soccer field. A parking lot is available along Chartres Street.

n 1912, when Starved Rock first opened its gates to the public as a State Park, camping was among the most popular reasons to make a trek out to LaSalle County. Of the 75,000 guests that visited in that first year, a large portion chose to soak in the region’s beautiful scenery from the comfort of a tent. These days, the camping tradition continues to grow. LaSalle County boasts a wide variety of places to spend a night under the stars, ranging from nostalgic rustic campsites to upscale “glamping” destinations. With more options than ever before, there’s never been a better time to pick a tent (or rent a camper) and spend a night closer to nature! Here’s a look at some of your options for camping during your next trip to LaSalle County.

 STARVED ROCK STATE PARK’S

CAMPGROUND, one of the area’s most popular camping sites, is conveniently located just south of the park, off of E950th Rd. This proximity means you can easily explore all the wonders that the park has to

Stars offer, and still have plenty of time to enjoy s’mores around the campfire. You’ll find modern amenities like a 24/7 firewood vending machine, in addition to two shower houses, a playground, a camp store and plenty of lavatories. This campground is capable of handling everything from pop-up tents to 45-ft trailers, you’ll find a variety of shaded, sunny and even handicap accessible spots. Each site features ample space to set up tents (a maximum of two per site), a picnic table, firepit and an electric hookup. Water hydrants can also be found scattered throughout the campground. Reservations must be made at least 3 days ahead of your arrival, and can be made up to 180 days in advance. To reserve a space, head to www.reserveamerica.com, or call 1-815-667-4726.

 ILLINI STATE PARK, located less than a half hour to the east of Starved Rock State Park in Marseilles, provides camping with an unbeatable view. With sites running along the banks of the Illinois River, campers are treated to a close-up view of barges entering
