Home décor makes a lovely, thoughtful gift. “If you’re looking for something one-of-a-kind, something special, then definitely the local shops, the locally owned momand-pops, will have more of a unique variety,” says Jackie Payne, owner of Bushel Basket Candle Co. at Northland Mall in Sterling. “We really look all year long to find those unique, special pieces that will make the holidays magical.” For seasonal décor, winter-themed decorations, rather than Christmas decorations, are the popular pick. Think snowmen and snowflakes versus Santa Claus and “Merry Christmas.” “Those are things you can leave out longer,” says Sarah Foshee, owner of Prim Pickins in Sterling. For more everyday décor,

Repurposed furniture is really popular, thanks to Pinterest. “It has really influenced what people want,” Foshee says. “People will come to me with a picture from Pinterest and say, ‘Can you make this?’ And I’m like, ‘Sure, I can!’” Upcycled décor is a big thing, too, also thanks to Pinterest. “Green Depression glass,
Jadeite – those are popular,” says Christian Morgan, co-owner of Waterfront Gifts in Dixon. “Flatware, too. We always sell a ton of flatware. Pinterest has just been out there in terms of putting this stuff to use.” And in terms of those unique gifts? Here are a few ideas: Bushel Basket Candle Co. carries mittens made from recycled wool sweaters. “They are the warmest things you could ever put on your hands,” Payne says. “We sell out every year, and we already are way ahead from previous years.” Sweet Woodruff in Fulton carries a variety of lanterns. “They can be changed out for every season,” says Wendy Ottens, owner of the gift shop. “They can be wooden or metal, hold a candle inside.” Sweet Woodruff also has Yule logs – real logs with places for a number of candles.
