DeKalb is a great college town with lots to offer all age groups. It offers everything from shopping, dining and activities to theatre, music, pubs and nightlife. Known for being home to Northern Illinois University, DeKalb has a gem in the NIU Convocation Center, which hosts events from Dog and Farm Shows to national music acts such as Rascal Flatts, Miranda Lambert and Kid Kudi. With two consecutive MAC Championships and a trip to the Orange Bowl last year, this has become the most popular event in town. NIU home football games have become a must for anyone in the DeKalb County area. Fans can start tailgating 3 hours before kickoff. Many of the area restaurant and bars have specials on game days to enjoy as well. For this year’s schedule visit www.niuhuskies.com. While on the NIU campus, take a quiet stroll along the lagoon and visit Altgeld Hall, known as the “Castle on the Hill” and the beautiful sculptures that surround it. Inside Altgeld Hall are the latest exhibits at the NIU Art Museum, including paintings, sculptures, and photographs. A short distance from campus (#7 Huskie Line) is downtown DeKalb, complete with historic landmarks, shopping and dining. The Egyptian Theatre, a restored 1930s movie palace is one of the best examples of Egyptian/Art Deco architecture in the country and was named one of the 150 places you must see in Illinois. The theatre has a wide variety of shows and entertainment. It has shown classic movies such as The Godfather, Vertigo, and Casablanca. It also shows cult classics such as the Rocky Horror Picture Show complete with audience participation. While having national music and comedians such as Aaron Carter, John Waite, and Ron White, they also turn the theatre into a 6 level haunted house during the week of Halloween. Want the real thing? The Egyptian has been well known for being haunted. They have haunted tours throughout the year. You will be split up into groups to investigate the ghosts and sightings to see if you can find your own evidence and possibly experience paranormal events! The tour and investigation
