MAP also has other attorneys to help out when multiple officers are involved in such incidents as each officer must have his own legal representation. “Public employee stuff is also covered,” Swoboda said. “These attorneys have a strong background in public law and how it apples to police procedure.” MAP started the seminars about six years ago. Ward said we decided to include the attorneys because “it goes along with how we run MAP; we just automatically continued this into our presentations.” Two big topics this year, according to Ward was the anticipation of coming COVID mandates for police departments and the new State reforms that affect how policing done. “I usually pick the topics. I pay attention to what has been going on through the year. The attorneys also have input,” Ward said. John Gaw, an attorney with Reimer, Dobrovolny & LaBardi, presented on internal investigations. As a former Lisle police officer he is well-versed in public safety law. He pointed out that an internal investigation follows any officer involved shooting, after the criminal investigation by the state’s attorney’s office or a major crimes task force. “MAP has really helped get this information out to officers,” Gaw said "That's one of the nice things about MAP... you can share with other attorneys and work together as a team to find the best solution. The MAP board members help out as well."
