CHARLESTON – Stephen Hubona’s goal was to wrap up the Class 3A discus state championship in the preliminary flights of the event. Mission accomplished. Unleashing a throw of 185 feet, 1 inch Friday, the Benet senior saw the mark hold up a day later as he brought a state title back to the Lisle school. “I’m really excited and incredibly proud I finally got that,” said Hubona, who had a throw of close to 180 feet during Saturday’s finals at Eastern Illinois University before scratching in his final attempt. “Coming out of Friday, I knew I had a shot [to win] with what I did. I knew going in I wanted to win it PhotoNews/Douglas Cottle – For Shaw Media on the first day so I would have Benet’s Stephen Hubona competes in a Class 3A discus preliminary flight Friday at the state meet. Everything felt good on the attempt, which put Hubona in first place for good. “It slipped off perfect,” said the senior, whose set his personal record this spring with a mark of 189-6. “It was not as high as maybe I would have liked it, it was more of a line drive, but the release was good and it just flew.” As a junior, Hubona finished seventh in Class 2A with a mark of 164-4. His best throw this past season was a 177, but he spent most of the year in the 160s. As for the increased distance as a senior, he pointed to a couple of things “I put a lot of it on weight lifting,” Hubona said, “and no school before the meet.” Hubona, a La Grange resident who won a sectional title the week before state with a throw of 177-1, will continue his track career at Loyola.
