t is my great pleasure to share with you this year’s Champions of Change Award Recipients. We are excited to continue the tradition of bringing two amazing groups of people together to be recognized in the way they deserve. We call this our “Champions of Change” celebration as each of the groups of recipients, our Community Cornerstones and our 40 Under Forty, represent doers, change makers, and community champions working to make the Illinois Valley an area we can all be proud of.

This publication celebrates two groups that, at first glance, might seem different. On one hand, we have our Community Cornerstone recipients, individuals whose impact has been built over years, even decades. On the other hand, our 40 Under Forty honorees are leaders who are rising, building, growing, and shaping what comes next. However, they are not as different as you might think, and in many ways across generations, industries, and backgrounds, they all share a few common themes: a deep connection to this region, a commitment to serving others, and an understanding that success isn’t about what you achieve but the people whom you help along the way.

I would be remiss if I didn’t extend my sincere thanks to our nominating committee for both the Cornerstone and 40 under Forty program, Dr. Tracy Morris, Lissa Olson, Dr. Clay Theisinger, Jenica Cole, and Jay McCracken. I hope you see this is a collaborative effort made up of a group that represents the entire Illinois Valley Region.

Please join me in celebrating the achievements of these amazing individuals. The impact they have made, and will continue to make, can be seen and felt all across the Illinois Valley, and we are truly lucky to have them in the communities we call home.

CREATING CONFIDENCE IN THE IV Megan Blankenhagen, the owner of Midwest Mane Co., has built a successful business and shares her knowledge with others.

“I’ve been self-employed for well over a decade, and I’ve built my career around creating confidence, authenticity, and providing life-changing hair enhancement services. I specialize in luxury hair extension and hair enhancement services. I’m also an educator and a mentor. Educating stylists both locally and beyond has become one of the most meaningful parts of my work,” Blankenhagen said.

“My goal has always been to serve clients better and make an impact in our community through artistry, integrity, and mentorship. Midwest Mane Co. has given me a space to pour into others, uplift confidence, and make a real impact in the Illinois Valley,” Blankenhagen said.

Blankenhagen, a 32-year-old who lives in Peru and grew up in Mendota, has a deep attachment to the Illinois Valley.

“My favorite part of living and working in the Illinois Valley is the sense of community. I love that I get to serve the same people I see out in everyday life — it creates real relationships, not just appointments.

There’s also something special about being surrounded by other local business owners who truly support one another,” Blankenhagen said.

In addition to being a business owner, Blankenhagen is also a wife and a mother – and her family is at the heart of what she does.

“In the next 5 to 10 years, my vision of success is to create financial freedom and passive income for my family, while continuing to grow and expand my brand beyond the salon. I want to build something that creates long-term stability and meaningful impact. Just as importantly, I hope to create lasting career opportunities for my team – giving them the room to grow, thrive, and build careers they can be proud of with purpose,” Blankenhagen said.

KATIE BURDETTE

OSF Healthcare, Director of Nursing Practice and Education for the I-80 Region

DEDICATION TO NURSING Katie Burdette grew up in Ottawa and knew early on she wanted to build a career there.

“During my college summers, I began my healthcare journey as a CNA at OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center (SEMC), caring for patients and gaining early insight into the values of compassionate nursing.

After earning my RN in 2011, I returned to SEMC and later discovered my passion for education and leadership. I became the nursing education coordinator in 2015 and completed my MSN in Nursing Management and Leadership in 2017,” Burdette said.

“I now serve as the Director of Nursing Practice and Education for the I-80 Region, where I’ve grown our education team from a single educator to a talented group of 10, now supporting nurses across five hospitals in the IV communities. In 2024, I earned my NPD nursing board certification, further strengthening my commitment to professional development,” Burdette added.

The professional accomplishment Burdette is most proud of is the preparation of the Magnet Designation application.

“I recently submitted our final application for Magnet Designation through the ANCC, (American Nurses Credentialing Center, a part of the American Nurses Association), a rigorous honor reserved for organizations that demonstrate nursing excellence, strong leadership, and a culture of professional development. Guiding our nurses through this three-year process as Magnet Program Director has been one of the most meaningful parts of my career,” Burdette said.

“By summer 2026, I am hopeful we will earn this prestigious designation across Ottawa, Peru, and Mendota – a true testament to the dedication of our nursing teams. We will be the first and only facilities to achieve this within an over 60-mile radius,” Burdette said.

Burdette is 37 years old and living in Ottawa with her husband, Phil, who was her high school sweetheart, and their two children.

“There is nowhere else I would rather plant my roots. The Illinois Valley isn’t just where I live – it’s where I belong,” Burdette said. “With our beautiful state parks, city parks, and clean communities, there’s always something outdoors to do with our kids. I trust our local schools to provide a great education. Our lowtraffic and quick daily drive to work means more time together and less time stressed and commuting.”

A4 EMILY CLARK Social Worker, Mendota CCSD #289, Northbrook School

PROVIDING MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES Ensuring students have the support they need is the main professional focus for Emily Clark, a school-based social worker at Northbrook School in Mendota.

“Mental health needs have increased exponentially, and many families do not have access to services, or their access is limited. I am honored to provide additional services to students so they can strive for success and overcome environmental, emotional, and behavioral obstacles,” Clark said.

Clark, a 35-year-old Oglesby resident, is a mother of three and considers them in every professional and personal decision.

“Personal success for me is to raise children that feel competent and able, and that seek to give to the world what they hope to receive,” Clark said. “The Illinois Valley has provided me the opportunity to be around my support system while raising my young children and working full time.”

Clark believes the Illinois Valley area is a great place for young families.

“I look forward to my children being raised in the Illinois Valley because I feel confident with the educational programming and various extracurricular activities available to them. I was raised in the Illinois Valley myself, and it’s heartwarming to share my past experiences with my children. Oglesby has an amazing library, competent schools, and great summer programming through the parks and rec department,” Clark said.

“I see the Illinois Valley as continuing to expand and ideally provide opportunities for my children to become their best selves, whether that be academically, financially, athletically. I love that the Illinois Valley is starting to get more resources that help us compete with the opportunities presented by larger cities,” Clark added.

When not working or spending time with family, Clark loves to bake.

“I take pride in making treats for all my children’s birthdays, class events, and daycare parties. I have previously made sugar cookie kits for various holidays that people have purchased,” Clark said.

CASSIE ESSL ER Nurse, OSF Peru

FOCUSING ON GROWTH Cassie Essl, a 32-year-old who lives in Tonica, juggles multiple challenging roles that require significant hard work and dedication.

“I am the co-owner of Essl Farms, a business my husband and I started just two years ago. Along with running our business full-time, I also work as an ER nurse and am a full-time mom to a busy 2-year-old,” Essl said. “Every day, whether I’m caring for patients or serving customers, I’m driven by gratitude, hard work, and a desire to continue growing personally and professionally.”

Essl’s lifelong passion for cooking led to the creation of Essl Farms.

“My great grandma would always cook for us growing up when we went and saw her in Missouri. My mom always had me in the kitchen at a very small age, and my love for cooking just grew from there,” Essl said. “At Essl Farms, we offer a wide variety of items such as caramels, turtles, cheesecake jars, and more.”

Essl said she is thrilled that some of Essl Farms’ products can now be found in grocery stores such as Handy Foods in Ottawa and Hy-Vees throughout Illinois.

“In the summer, we do a farmstand that will start in May, and we offer all of our items plus our fresh-grown produce.

Families love bringing their kids out here to feed the chickens and ducks for free and see Huck, our dog,” Essl said.

“One of my greatest joys is meeting the people who support us and seeing the positive impact our farmstand has made in their lives. I care deeply about building connections, supporting local families, and creating a space that feels warm and welcoming,” Essl added.

Essl, who is a member of the Oglesby Elks Lodge, loves living in the Illinois Valley.

“My husband and I chose to stay in the Illinois Valley because we were both raised here and all of our family is here.

This community is home to us, and being surrounded by the people we love is something we truly value,” Essl said.

A5 KELLY FAHLE Marketing Specialist, Express Employment Professionals

TRANSFORMING PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY Looking back on her life, Kelly Fahle, a marketing specialist at Express Employment Professionals, is amazed at how far she has come, both professionally and personally.

“If you could believe it, a few years back, I didn’t even know what to post on my own Facebook, let alone know how to represent an entire company on such a public platform,” she said.

Fahle’s marketing career began at a local insurance office, where she posted a few Facebook posts and performed other small-scale marketing duties.

“I had no idea at that time that I was stepping into a career I was going to fall in love with.

When I started with Express in 2023, I discovered how much I loved using my creativity to help bring people together, tell some incredible stories, and bring order to chaos by simplifying big, intimidating information,” Fahle said.

“Over the last two years, my role has grown to oversee marketing for four Express offices plus multiple satellite locations, hosting events of all sorts, and putting our teams on the map by showcasing the human side of our work,” she said.

Fahle, who is 30, believes a big part of her transformation was a result of deciding to move to Ottawa.

“The thing I am most proud of isn’t something you’d typically see on a resume, but it’s a decision that changed the course of my life and career and helped me grow into the professional I am today. Owning a home had always been a dream of mine from a very young age, and when 2020 hit, the last thing I was expecting was to end the year as a first-time homeowner in Ottawa. I had no idea what I was getting myself into – all I knew was it felt like home the moment I walked into the house I now call mine,” Fahle said.

“That leap of faith is what placed me in the Illinois Valley and opened the doors to opportunities I never imagined I would have,” she said.

Fahle currently serves in various leadership roles throughout the Illinois Valley. She is a member of the Greater Ottawa Networking Group (GONG), where she serves as vice president, and is a member of Ottawa Network for Young Executives, Personal and Professional Women’s Development Network, Ottawa Business Builders, and other organizations.

ALEXIS FERRACUTI-STEARNS Managing Partner, Law Offices of Peter F. Ferracuti, P.C.

WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY Since joining the Law Offices of Peter F. Ferracuti, P.C., Alexis Ferracuti-Stearns has fought hard for injured workers and individuals throughout northern Illinois.

“Professionally, I am most proud of carrying forward the legacy my father, Peter Ferracuti, began when he founded our firm in 1953. I became an attorney in 2014 and took over the firm in 2015 with very little guidance, stepping into an enormous responsibility at a young age. Through hard work, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to our clients, I have helped grow the firm into an award-winning practice while staying true to its core mission of fighting for justice,” Ferracuti-Stearns said.

“I am actively involved in numerous professional, civic, and nonprofit organizations. I am a member of the Ottawa Noon Rotary, the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, the Justinian Lawyers Association, the Workers’ Compensation Lawyers Association, and the Workers’ Injury Law Group. Within the Illinois State Bar Association, I serve as the Journal Editor for the Workers’ Compensation Committee, co-editor of the ISBA Rural Practice Newsletter, and a member of the Illinois Bar Journal Editorial Board, and I am also a published author in the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Journal,” she added.

Ferracuti-Stearns, who is 36 years old, grew up in Ottawa and now lives on a six-acre farm in rural Earlville.

She serves on the boards of LaSalle County CASA, Under His Wings, and the Salvation Army. She volunteers with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and has chaired the LaSalle County Out of the Darkness Walk since 2015, which had 300 walkers and raised $54,000 this past year.

“Whether through financial donations, volunteering my time to pack and distribute food, organizing community relief efforts, or coordinating mental health trainings to expand access to free education and outreach, I am constantly working to strengthen the community that raised me,” she said.

Ferracuti-Stearns is married to Jeremiah Stearns and is the junior high cheer coach at Earlville Junior High School.

“On a personal level, I strive every day to be a better ‘aunt-mama’ to my niece for whom we have guardianship, a better wife to my husband, a better daughter, and a better friend,” she said.

SARAH FINLEY Assistant Branch Manager, SOCU’s Ottawa Branch

LEADING AND SERVING Sarah Finley has become a leader in the community while working as an assistant branch manager at SOCU’s Ottawa Branch.

“I specialize in loan and account management, operational leadership, and delivering exceptional member service. In my role, I combine financial expertise with a passion for community engagement, consistently seeking innovative ways to support members and strengthen local connections,” said Finley, who is also a certified credit union financial counselor.

“Volunteerism is something I really discovered for myself over the past five years since I started at SOCU. Prior to working here, my volunteer and community involvement was fairly limited — not because I didn’t want to be involved, but because I had never worked for a company that truly empowered and encouraged employees to engage with their communities,” Finley said.

Finley has taken on various leadership roles, including with the Ottawa Network of Young Executives, Ottawa Downtown Association, and LaSalle County CASA Board of Directors. In addition, Finley is a member of the Ottawa Sunrise Rotary.

“I am currently 31 years old, and my wife and I live in Ottawa,” Finley said. “I chose to stay in the Illinois Valley because it’s home in every sense of the word. Born and raised here as the daughter of a lifelong farmer, I have a deep respect for the land and the people who make this community so special. Ottawa has been my home for the past seven years, and my wife has lived here even longer. We love this town so much that we purchased our first home here last year, and we couldn’t imagine a better place to build our future.”

The professional accomplishment Finley is most proud of is simply having the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of SOCU members and the Ottawa community each day.

“Each interaction brings unique challenges and rewards, and knowing I can ease someone’s stress – whether by helping them skip a car payment during a tough month or securing financing for a vehicle they never thought possible – is incredibly fulfilling. I am proud to work for an organization that invests in my education and empowers me to create real impact, not only for our members but for the community we serve,” Finley said.

JULIA FOWKES Events and Promotions Manager, Shaw Local Radio

LEARNING AND ADAPTING Julia Fowkes finds a way to get things done – even when dealing with a new job and big projects. Fowkes, a 34-year-old Magnolia resident, jumped right into the role of events and promotions manager at Shaw Local Radio.

“I started at Shaw Local Radio in January 2025, and just a month later, I was helping lead the Illinois Valley Bridal Expo in February as the main point of contact for the event,” Fowkes said.

“Immediately after that, I planned our Listener Appreciation Party in the Dixon market for 350 people – managing the budget, securing local business trade opportunities, coordinating with the venue, and communicating every detail to staff,” Fowkes said. “Not only did both events run smoothly, but the venue told me it was the smoothest and most efficient the event had ever been in all the years they’ve hosted it. Since then, I’ve continued to take on larger projects, including a concert that brought in more than 500 attendees.”

To tackle big projects, Fowkes stays on top of things and tries to learn more at every opportunity.

“Looking back, every role I’ve had — whether in nonprofit work, corporate environments, or sales — has helped prepare me for this position. I’ve learned that it’s okay not to have all the answers right away,” Fowkes said.

Fowkes, who grew up in Ladd, lived in the northwest suburbs for almost a decade before returning to the Illinois Valley in 2023.

“What drew me home was the sense of community you can’t find everywhere – the small-town support, the way people show up for one another, and the family-friendly events that make this area feel connected and alive,” Fowkes said. “As a mom of two kids, it mattered to me that they grow up in a place where they feel safe, seen, and supported.”

Volunteerism is also important to Fowkes, who serves as development manager on the board of Illinois Valley Recovery, volunteers at Ax Church, and has coached t-ball in Magnolia for the past two seasons.

VICKIE FRENZER

President, Vista Resources Inc.

BUILDING A BUSINESS People find their way to the Illinois Valley for all sorts of reasons. For Vickie Frenzer, it was a love of boating that led to moving here.

“The river introduced me to the area, but the people and the community are what made it feel like home,” Frenzer said. “As someone who didn’t grow up here, I’ve really come to appreciate how welcoming the Illinois Valley is. There’s a strong sense of pride in the community, and people truly show up for one another. It’s the kind of place where relationships matter, and that makes it incredibly special.”

Frenzer, a 38-year-old Princeton resident, is the president of Vista Resources Inc., a small business that offers commercial insurance premium auditing services.

“After college, I spent four years in Denver, Colorado, as a gym owner and high school coach. After some time in Denver, I moved back to Chicago to become president of Vista Resources Inc. April 2020 allowed me the opportunity to shift the business to be solely home-based and move to the Illinois Valley,” Frenzer said.

“An accomplishment I am most proud of is the growth that I have seen in my business over the last four years. When I took over the business, it was running in a deficit year-over-year, and I have been able to grow over 500 percent over the last four years,” Frenzer said.

Frenzer’s love of boating led to joining the Starved Rock Yacht Club as a member in July 2021.

“I took over as secretary in August 2021 and held that position through December 2024. For the 2025 year, I shifted over to treasurer of the club in charge of all things financial, including, but not limited to, paying bills, issuing invoices, and offering suggestions to the board based on financial trends over the last five years.

I also sat as the club’s entertainment director for two years, coordinating and handling all on-site events, which often included working closely with those in the community,” Frenzer, who is also a certified part-time coach at Starved Rock CrossFit in Peru, said.

RAY GATZA

Administrative Sergeant, City of La Salle Police Department

KEEPING THE AREA SAFE In his role as an administrative sergeant with the City of La Salle Police Department, Ray Gatza works hard to ensure public safety.

“Most of my career has been spent on the midnight patrol shift, with a period on day shift patrol before I was promoted to Sergeant,” Gatza said. “I have spent my entire career working directly with people, problemsolving in real time, and supporting those who need help the most. I take pride in staying calm under pressure, treating everyone with respect, and approaching every situation with compassion and fairness.”

Gatza, a 35-year-old Oglesby resident, was born and raised in La Salle and has been with the La Salle Police Department since 2013.

“One thing I wish people understood about policing is that the vast majority of officers truly care about the communities they serve. Every day we respond to people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives, and our goal is to help, protect, and bring some level of stability to those situations. Like any profession, we are human and not perfect, but most officers come to work with the intention of doing the right thing and making a positive difference in their community,” Gatza said.

“The professional accomplishment I am most proud of is leading the research, planning, and implementation of our new multi-agency CAD/RMS system, which now spans 21 different agencies across police, fire, and EMS. This project required countless hours of studying systems, gathering input from all disciplines, coordinating vendors, and helping guide everyone through a major change in how we operate and share information,” Gatza said. “I am proud of this work because it is already creating a foundation that will enhance how we respond, communicate, and document our calls for service.”

Gatza, who is involved in multiple community and leadership roles, believes in leading by example – both in his professional and personal roles.

“My wife, Ashley, and I have two young children, Brexley and Beckett. Being a husband and father is my greatest honor and the motivation behind my continued service to the community,” Gatza added.

ASHTON GOOD HR Generalist, Vactor Manufacturing LIVING A BUSY, FULL LIFE Ashton Good is proof that it’s possible to become highly educated without leaving the Illinois Valley.

“I am incredibly lucky to have been able to finish three degrees – associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s – all in four years of schooling and with no student debt when finished,” Good said. “After graduating high school, I was already walking into IVCC (Illinois Valley Community College) with college credits that would just continue to benefit my education.”

After Good spent two years at IVCC, the beginning of the Covid pandemic influenced her path.

“The opportunity of finishing my bachelor’s degree online presented itself. After evaluating the course load and taking into consideration the self-control I would need to be successful, I decided to do the two-year program in one year. Upon finishing my degree, I was offered a position using the education I just received.

After a year in my career, I decided to once again finish a two-year program in less than a year and obtain my MBA,” Good said.

“This was no easy task and included missing out on lots, a great amount of patience with myself, and being organized as a full-time student and full-time employee,” Good added. “However, graduating with my MBA and being able to say I was debt-free made it all worth it and the greatest accomplishment I have thus far in my life.”

Good, who is now 26 years old and living in Streator, is employed as an HR generalist at Vactor Manufacturing and serves as the vice chair of the Streator Area CEO board.

“I am the oldest of five, and I often joke that’s what inspired me to pursue a career in human resources. I’ve been creating policies, strongly encouraging people to follow them, and reprimanding them when they didn’t, since the first of my siblings was born in 2002,” Good said.

“My favorite part of living in the Illinois Valley is being close in proximity to the people I love and care about,” Good said. “While my career is a large part of my life, I am fortunate to have an extremely fulfilling life outside of my job as well. I enjoy all live music, walking outside, hosting girls’ nights, and obsessing over anything Taylor Swift.”

DANI HOLLAND

Regional Program Director/On-Air, Shaw Media

BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER Dani Holland, the regional program director for Shaw Media, believes that broadcasting helps bring people together.

“You might wake up to my voice during the week on Walls 102, and if you do, thank you. I’m the Walls 102 morning show host. I’m also a coffee enthusiast, mom of two toddlers, and someone who will always want to pet your dog,” Holland said.

“Every show, interview, and on-air moment is shaped by a commitment to inform, uplift, and connect the people I serve. I use my platform not just to entertain, but to amplify local voices, celebrate hometown achievements, and create a space where everyone feels seen and heard,” Holland said.

Holland takes tremendous pride in the work she’s done at Shaw Media.

“I have grown from being just an afternoon show host to the top country morning show in the Illinois Valley, along with overseeing six stations here, but also three more stations in Dixon, Illinois,” Holland said.

Holland, who volunteers in the nursery at Ax Church so parents concentrate on the Sunday service, is 35 years old and lives in Ladd with her husband and children.

“I came to the Illinois Valley in 2015. I was living in Bloomington, Illinois, when I got offered a full-time radio position. I took the job and commuted for about three months. It didn’t take long for that commute to be too much, so I moved to Ladd. My husband and I loved the area, and we settled down and decided to raise our family here,” Holland said.

“What I love most about living in the Illinois Valley is the community. When someone is in need, this community comes together to help. SHOWCASING STARVED ROCK COUNTRY Alaina Iverson, who lives in Ottawa, is dedicated to showcasing and celebrating the community she loves.

“I serve as the Mayor’s Assistant and Special Events Coordinator for the City of Ottawa, supporting daily operations and helping advance key initiatives under the guidance of Mayor Hasty. I am an active member of the Special Events Committee and the Fall Fest Committee, and I represent the city on both the Arts Committee and the Ottawa Visitors Center. In these roles, I work closely with local organizations, businesses, and residents to create programs and events that bring people together and showcase the best of Starved Rock Country,” Iverson said.

“I also coordinate the Hope & Humanity Roundtable, an initiative that brings local agencies and leaders together to address community needs, share resources, and develop solutions that strengthen our region. I take pride in connecting people, building relationships, and finding creative ways to make a positive impact in our community,” she said.

In her free time, Iverson, who is 34, teamed up with her sister, Laura, to write a children’s book called The Adventures of Otis and Annie that highlights their love of nature.

“Growing up just minutes from Starved Rock, we spent so much of our childhood exploring the park’s trails, waterfalls, and scenic overlooks. Those experiences sparked a deep love for the outdoors that has stayed with us ever since,” Iverson said.

“Recently, we both became moms in 2023 – our babies were born just 12 weeks apart – which made us start thinking about how we could share that same appreciation for nature with our kids. That idea is what inspired us to write The Adventures of Otis and Annie. We wanted to create a children’s story that introduces young readers to the beauty and adventure of the outdoors while highlighting a place that means so much to us – Starved Rock State Park,” she said.

SHAPING YOUNG MINDS Miranda Johnson relishes the opportunity to shape and influence young minds in her role as Serena Middle School mentor for the Regional Office of Education.

“My role allows me to work one-on-one with students as well as in group settings to provide support.

This support may include practicing problem-solving skills, developing social and emotional skills, fostering academic growth, and serving as a consistent, positive connection for students within the school community,” Johnson said.

“I also get the opportunity to work with school staff and parents and guardians to develop a truly personalized approach to aid each student throughout their unique path and set goals that matter to them. I love watching the students learn to advocate for their own success both within the school environment and beyond,” Johnson added.

Prior to joining the Regional Office of Education, Johnson worked as an adult probation office in Kendall County.

“From there, I made the choice in 2019 to transition to LaSalle County Probation to aid in the creation of the LaSalle County Drug and Mental Health Court programs. With seeing the impact that certain choices make on young minds, I found the ROE’s initiative to support youth in schools at a mentor level would be the next logical step to help others reach their potential,” Johnson said.

Johnson, who is 35 and resides in Marseilles, is a wife and has two young boys.

“They inspire me to continue to want to effect change and be better,” Johnson said, adding that the Illinois Valley is a great place to raise children. “I enjoy living and working in the Illinois Valley due to its strong sense of community, access to beautiful outdoor spaces, and the opportunity it provides to build meaningful connections with students and families while making a positive impact. It is also a warm, welcoming place to raise my family.”

LEADING WITH AUTHENTICITY Kelsey Klein is a busy 30-year-old rural Arlington resident who is juggling several roles.

“I am a social worker, manager, wife, and mother of three who leads with mindfulness, compassion, and a strong belief in the importance of self-love and personal healing. In my social work practice, I integrate trauma-informed care, cultural humility, and evidence-based approaches to support individuals and families navigating mental health challenges, substance use recovery, and life transitions,” Klein said.

“Mindfulness is at the center of my work, guiding me to create calm, grounded, and supportive spaces where clients can reconnect with themselves and move toward their goals with intention,” Klein added. “My identity as a wife and mom of three deeply influences my values and work ethic. These roles remind me of the importance of balance, resilience, and practicing the same self-compassion I encourage in others.”

In addition to being a social worker, Klein serves as a manager at The Tee Box, her family’s business.

“I oversee operations, staff coordination, scheduling, customer experience, and assist with creative elements such as signature drink development and event planning. In this leadership role, I prioritize professionalism, communication, and a positive environment for both staff and guests,” Klein said.

Klein initially planned to leave the Illinois Valley area, but her plans changed – and she couldn’t be happier about it.

“When I was younger, I fully intended to leave the area and start fresh somewhere else. I even had plans to move to Florida for college. During that time, I met my husband and found myself choosing between leaving the state or pursuing a relationship that felt genuine and important. I chose him, and ten years of marriage later, it remains one of the best decisions I have ever made,” Klein said.

“The Illinois Valley is a special place to raise a family because it truly feels like home. It’s the kind of community where people look out for each other, where your kids are known by name, and where strong values are passed down through generations,” she said.

BRANDON LACHANCE Broadcast Journalist for Starved Rock Media and Self-Employed WORKING MULTIPLE ROLES Brandon LaChance, a 40-year-old who lives in Mendota, seems to always be on the go.

“I host Edge of Your Seat Podcast, created Neighborhood Notes (a news outlet on Facebook), broadcast on Starved Rock Media radio stations, referee five sports for the IHSA and IESA, am the vice president of the Illinois Valley Volleyball Officials Association, am on the Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce Board, and am part of the Mendota Rotary Club,” LaChance said. “I spent the last four years as the editor of The Amboy News and a co-editor of The Mendota Reporter before it closed and was then bought by another owner.”

A schedule like that doesn’t leave much free time, but LaChance thrives on staying busy.

“I’ve always been a hard worker. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve wanted to give back to the community. Put the both together, and it has worked out where I get to use my work ethic, determination, and giving back for not only the community I live in, Mendota, but the entire Illinois Valley. Outside of work and community projects, I try to relax and do other things, but it’s usually easier said than done,” he said.

Although he enjoys the Illinois Valley area now, it wasn’t love at first sight.

“When I first came to Mendota in 1997 at 12 years old, I didn’t like it. I came from Rockford and a brief stint in DeKalb. Both were bigger cities, and I considered myself a city boy. Once I graduated from Mendota High School in 2004, I went to SIU in Carbondale because it was the furthest away,” he said.

Although he enjoyed his time in Carbondale, it also opened his eyes a bit.

“It made me realize how much I liked the Illinois Valley. I’ve moved to a few different states, and each time I wanted to come back and did,” LaChance said. “After the different moves, I knew the Illinois Valley is where I want to be.”

PUTTING FAMILY FIRST Since 2021, Bethany Lamb has helped women feel beautiful and empowered at her shop, B Dominique Boutique in Ottawa. But with recent life events, Lamb, who is 27 and a mom to two with a third on the way, has had a change of plans “Just recently, my family and I made the big decision for me to close B Dominique. We were so blessed to have the success we did, but life took a few turns,” she said, adding that a health issue involving one of her children has caused her to reevaluate things.

“I always felt like my calling in life was to be a mother. Of course, my love for helping women find themselves through fashion was also my passion, but being a mother is a dream come true,” she said. “I believe that I did what I was put here to do and help women find love in themselves again, but now my life has focused on my biggest blessings, and it’s time for me to focus on my babies and my husband.”

Although Lamb will miss owning B Dominque, she is grateful she had the opportunity and will always be proud of herself for rising to the challenge.

“To say I opened a business at the age of 21 is huge. And getting to live that life was an absolute dream come true,” Lamb said.

Although her shop is closing its doors, she remains dedicated to Ottawa.

“Ottawa is and will always be my home. I graduated college early, determined to come back and do good for a town I love,” Lamb said.

BUILDING A BUSINESS FROM SCRATCH Kayla Law, a 35-year-old LaSalle resident, has built a business, Kayla Law’s Cleaning Service, from the ground up through hard work and sacrifice.

“I started my business from absolutely nothing, no investors, no roadmap – just determination, hard work, and the belief that I could create something better for my family. What began as me cleaning homes on my own has grown into a respected, in-demand company that provides residential, commercial, Airbnb, and Vrbo cleaning,” Law said.

“Building this business has allowed me to show my kids and other women that strength, independence, and resilience can create opportunities you never thought possible. I’m committed to my clients, my team, and my community, and I’m excited to continue growing and making a positive impact in the Illinois Valley,” she said. “I’m a mom, a leader, and a woman who believes in lifting others up.”

Although Law has had success with her business, she’s hoping to grow it even more in the future.

“In the next 5 to 10 years, I see my business continuing to grow throughout LaSalle, Putnam, and surrounding counties. I hope to expand my team, add more residential and commercial contracts, and eventually open a small office or storefront where I can train new cleaners and support even more clients,” Law said. “I want to build a company that offers stable jobs, a healthy team environment, and opportunities for women to succeed. I also hope to create systems that allow me to balance business growth with being present for my kids as they get older.”

Law is glad she chose to build her life in the Illinois Valley because of the opportunities she has here.

“The community here is supportive, familiar, and full of opportunity if you’re willing to work hard. Being in the Illinois Valley allows me to stay close to my family, my clients, and the people who have helped shape who I am. I want my kids to grow up in a place where people know each other, support local businesses, and take pride in their neighborhoods. This area gave me the space to build something from nothing, and I’m grateful for that,” Law said.

LESSONS FROM THE FARM Jordan Lebahn learned about leadership while growing up on a family farm and implements those life lessons at work.

“As director of human resources at Marquis Management, I support over 450 employees in our biofuels and renewable energy companies. Since joining Marquis ten years ago, I have helped guide our workforce from just over 200 employees to more than double that number. Contributing to this growth and developing the systems to support it has been a highlight of my career. I am passionate about turning complex challenges into clear, organized processes that improve daily work for our team,” Lebahn said.

“The achievement I’m most proud of is how HR has changed at Marquis in recent years. When I first joined, HR mainly acted as a support team, only getting involved when problems arose. As the company expanded, it was clear we had to change our approach. I focused on making HR more thoughtful, proactive, and closely connected to the company’s direction,” Lebahn said. “A big part of this change has been getting our people ready for the future by spotting skill gaps, developing talent from within, and offering real chances for promotion.”

Lebahn, who is 36 and resides in Peru, said life on a multi-generational farm taught many valuable lessons.

“On a farm, every generation is only a steward for a period of time. That perspective has shaped how I approach leadership – recognizing that our responsibility is to strengthen organizations and people so they are better for those who come after us,” Lebahn said.

“Farming teaches you that everyone contributes in different ways depending on their strengths and the season of life they’re in. That lesson carries directly into HR – strong teams are built when leaders recognize and value the different ways people contribute,” Lebahn added.

Lebahn is pleased to have found a career doing work that matters while not having to leave the Illinois Valley.

“The Illinois Valley has always been home for me. My connection to agriculture and the family farm shaped my work ethic and my belief that strong local employers can change entire communities. One of the most meaningful aspects of my job is helping people build rewarding careers right here – close to where they grew up, near their families, and close to the land and values that shaped them,” Lebahn said.

STRENGTHENING THE COMMUNITY Edgar Lucero Castillo relishes the chance to help the community, both through volunteerism and in his role as an attorney at Perona, Peterlin & Associates.

“I love having the opportunity to help people in the Illinois Valley, who I consider my friends and neighbors. Whether someone is going through a difficult time or celebrating an important moment in their lives, being able to guide and support them through those moments is incredibly rewarding,” Castillo said. “As an attorney, I am passionate about supporting members of our community and providing work that has a meaningful, positive impact on their lives.”

“I am most proud of my work as an attorney, where I can help ensure people understand their rights and receive the support they need, particularly those who might otherwise struggle to navigate the legal system, such as members of the Hispanic community, where language can be a barrier,” he said.

Castillo grew up in LaSalle and now lives in Peru with his wife, Alyssa, and said he decided to stay in the Illinois Valley so he can contribute to the community that helped shape him. He serves on the board of the IVCC Foundation and volunteers as a soccer coach with the Illinois Valley Youth Soccer League.

“My goal is to use my skills and opportunities to help make our corner of the world an even better place to live, work, and build a future. For me, success means leaving the community stronger than I found it,” Castillo said.

“I am continually inspired and fascinated by the stories of the people who call the Illinois Valley home. Their experiences, resilience, and legacies shape this community, and I believe each story adds something meaningful to what makes the IV such a special place. That perspective shapes the way I practice law and engage with our community,” he said.

“I focus on hard work, building relationships, prioritizing family, and contributing to my community,” he said, adding that his future goals include growing long-lasting relationships with his customers while finding time to be an involved husband and father.

Magerkurth, who is 38 years old and living in Utica, earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Illinois Wesleyan University in 2010.

“I have been a new and used truck sales representative with CIT for 15 years. My wife, Melinda, and I were married in 2013 and have 3 daughters – Lorelai, Vanessa, and Jacqueline. I enjoy playing golf, traveling, and spending time with family and friends,” Magerkurth said.

The proudest moment he has had professionally is being recognized as top vocational salesman twice

by Kenworth Truck Company.

“There are a lot of very talented and hardworking sales representatives that sell Kenworth trucks, so to be named at the top is very rewarding,” Magerkurth said.

He spends time volunteering in the community at YMCA Dolphins Swim Team and as an assistant Utica T-ball coach, and likes raising his children in the Illinois Valley.

“The Illinois Valley is full of amazing people that make it a great place to live,” Magerkurth said. “The community really supports children in all aspects. Everyone comes together to give them the best environment to grow and develop. I see the area continuing to grow with young families and small businesses that make this area unique and attractive to new residents and tourists.”

TEACHING FINANCIAL LITERACY Madison Mendoza has learned a lot about finance since beginning work at the Streator Onized Credit Union at age 19. Now at 26, Mendoza, who lives in Streator, is sharing what she’s learned with students.

“Over the past seven years, I’ve grown with the organization, beginning as a teller at 19, transitioning into a loan officer role, and ultimately finding my passion in training and development. In my current position, I support staff through hands-on training, procedure updates, and ongoing professional development,” Mendoza said.

“One of the most meaningful aspects of my work is leading our youth financial literacy initiatives. I have the privilege of teaching students from pre-K through high school about saving, budgeting, credit, and the fundamentals of responsible money management, helping empower the next generation to build strong financial futures,” Mendoza added.

Teaching finance to the younger generation is incredibly important so they will know how to manage their money and avoid making costly mistakes.

“I believe teaching students about finance is essential in today’s world, especially since many of us don’t receive that knowledge from previous generations. When I started working at the credit union at 19, I didn’t have the financial understanding I have now, simply because it wasn’t taught in school or at home.

Today, it’s incredibly common for adults to lack financial knowledge that could have put them on a much stronger path toward financial success,” Mendoza said.

Mendoza, who is a dedicated community volunteer, enjoys learning new things and strives to push herself to continually grow.

“Outside of the credit union, I’m a proud mother and wife, as well as a part-time college student. I enjoy volunteering, planning events, attending concerts, and seeking out new opportunities for both personal and professional growth,” Mendoza said.

Her work ethic is vital to her, and she hopes to continue her family’s tradition of working hard.

“Although I didn’t come from a family of college graduates, I did come from a family of hardworking, determined people. When others speak about my grandpa or my mom, the first thing they mention is their work ethic. That legacy motivates me every day, and my hope is that I will earn the same reputation through the way I show up, grow, and contribute, both personally and professionally,” Mendoza said.

HELPING WITH STRESS AND ANXIETY Leaving the Illinois Valley made Seth Miskowiec realize how valuable the sense of community is here.

“After living in LaSalle my entire life, I moved to Chicago and worked in sales for nearly four years. While I enjoyed the experience, I found myself missing the sense of community and slower pace of small-town life. Living in the city made me more irritable and disconnected, and I realized that I wanted the close-knit, supportive environment of my hometown again,” Miskowiec said.

“I also now have a wife and daughter, and I wanted my daughter to experience the same community that my wife and I had growing up. This led me to return, pursue my master’s degree in social work, and become a behavioral health therapist. I’m grateful to be back in the Illinois Valley and truly appreciate everything this area has to offer,” Miskowiec added.

Now 35 years old and living in Peru, Miskowiec is passionate about assisting others in navigating their feelings of stress and anxiety.

“Raised in a loving family, I was taught the importance of addressing and discussing emotions, which has shaped my approach as a therapist. I connect with people through humor, empathy, and compassion, always aiming to create a space free from judgment. My mission is to spread positivity and support mental wellbeing in our community,” Miskowiec said.

The constant presence of technology in everyday life can set the stage for anxiety-related struggles, Miskowiec said.

“Constant notifications from apps like Instagram or TikTok keep your brain in a loop where it never really relaxes. Seeing everyone’s ‘perfect’ lives online all the time can mess with your head and make you more anxious about your own life. Always reaching for quick distractions makes it harder to actually sit with your feelings and learn how to handle them,” Miskowiec said.

Miskowiec takes great satisfaction in helping his clients deal with anxiety and stress.

“It’s very rewarding to see them overcome challenges,” Miskowiec said.

PROMOTING THE POWER OF FASHION Emma Nagel, a sales manager at Kelley Cawley, believes that fashion can be transformative.

“I’ve worked in retail since I was 18, so fashion has always been a true passion of mine. What I love most is helping people feel confident and empowered in what they wear. I believe that a thoughtfully put together outfit has the power to elevate not only how you look, but how you carry yourself — allowing you to show up as your most confident self,” Nagel said.

“For the past 10 years, I’ve poured my heart into Kelley Cawley, a place that has become more than just work for me,” she said. “It’s a place where I get to help women feel confident, understood, and genuinely cared for. I don’t just help style an outfit – I listen, I learn their stories, and I create relationships that last way beyond a single visit. The ability to connect, uplift, and make people feel seen is truly my passion and the heart of everything I do.”

Nagel, who is 31 and lives in Channahon, is married and has two sons.

“My mom’s family farm in Mendota is what brought us back to the Illinois Valley area, and I’m so grateful it did. Returning here allowed me to be close to my roots while building the life I’ve dreamed of. It also led me to a job I love at Kelley Cawley – an opportunity that has truly shaped who I am personally and professionally. What started as a simple move has become a place where I’ve found purpose, community, and a career that inspires me every day,” Nagel said.

“The Illinois Valley has become such a meaningful place in my life. I’m committed to continuing to grow, contribute, and show up for the people who make it special,” she said.

Nagel is happy with the direction she sees the Illinois Valley headed in.

“In the next 5 to 10 years, I see the Illinois Valley continuing to grow into a stronger, more connected community. I imagine local businesses thriving, new opportunities opening, and a renewed focus on supporting the people who live and work here. With its deep roots, hardworking spirit, and sense of hometown pride, the Illinois Valley has all the pieces to become an even more vibrant place to live. PROVIDING ONE-ON-ONE QUALITY CARE Lindsey Nordstrom, a physical therapist and the owner of Spry Physical Therapy and Geriatric Wellness, is drawn to helping the aging adult population.

“About three years into my career, I realized I loved working with the aging population and wanted that to be my primary focus. Then, about nine years ago, after doing a bunch of prep courses for my geriatrics boards exam, I became inspired to someday start my own practice,” Nordstrom said.

“The idea just kept growing until I took the risk and started Spry. Ultimately, I didn’t want to just be a number to a large company. I wanted to bring back one-on-one quality care and be able to do more community outreach and education, as well as provide an environment for other therapists to grow and thrive with the aging adult population,” she said.

Nordstrom, who is 38 and lives in Ottawa, is moving her clinic into a bigger building in Ottawa and hopes to be in the new location in July 2026.

“The goal of the move is to provide services to more people of the community and expand our services to include a stretch/mobility lab concept, as well as more outreach programs for the community,” she said.

Starting her own business has been a challenge, but Nordstrom, who is a mother of three children, said her entrepreneurial husband has been a big support.

“I learned nothing about business in PT school, so owning my own company felt unattainable; however, it was always something that I dreamed of doing,” she said. “Spry now has become so much more than I could have imagined, and we are just at the beginning. I am so happy to be able to provide a welcoming space for older adults to receive care during their most vulnerable times.”

LIFTING OTHERS UP Ricky Parsons has found that challenges shape who you become and your view on life. The hardships Parsons faced have led to a deep commitment to helping others.

“I grew up raised by a single mother, and in my early adulthood found myself struggling with homelessness.

Giving back is a reminder of why I work so hard and from where I come,” Parsons said.

Parsons, who is 35, has a fiancé, and lives in Spring Valley, is the co-founder and operator of three ventures – KTO Travel Solutions, Next Level Exit, and FYA Bar & Lounge.

“Each one reflects a different part of what I care about most – creating opportunity, empowering people, and building spaces where everyone feels seen and supported,” Parsons said.

“Through KTO, I’ve led high-performing travel sales teams and helped families unlock better vacation value.

With Next Level Exit, I’ve guided owners through complicated timeshare situations with honesty, clarity, and compassion. FYA has become a lively, welcoming hub in downtown LaSalle – not just for nightlife, but for giving back,” Parsons added.

Although Parsons supports a variety of organizations, Peru PADS is a favorite.

“I’m especially passionate about supporting Peru PADS and assisting the less fortunate in our community.

Whether through resources, job opportunities, or simple guidance, I believe in lifting people up whenever I can,” Parsons said. “I came back to put down roots. I used to think the grass was greener on the other side, and life taught me that it’s green where you water it. And I want to water my own backyard, where my family is – the Illinois Valley.”

A BIG SUPPORTER OF OTTAWA Jade Poundstone, a senior consultant at Tria Federal, believes in pursuing continual growth and pitching in to make the community a better place.

“I work in federal healthcare consulting, primarily supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs. My role focuses on improving access to care for Veterans by supporting large-scale healthcare programs and initiatives, including community care operations and oversight,” Poundstone said.

“On a day-to-day basis, I collaborate with both government and private sector partners to streamline processes, improve program performance, and help ensure veterans receive timely, high-quality care.

Much of my work involves solving complex challenges, aligning priorities across teams, and contributing to efforts that drive meaningful, system-level improvements in how care is delivered to those who have served,” Poundstone said.

Poundstone, who is 28 and lives in Ottawa, is deeply involved in the community.

“Outside of work, you can usually find me volunteering at City of Ottawa events or contributing to a few signature events I’ve had the honor of helping shape and make my own. I’m family-oriented, deeply rooted in my hometown, and have lived in Ottawa my entire life with no intention of leaving,” Poundstone said.

“My involvement with City of Ottawa events, tourism, and development is entirely volunteer-based, and I’m committed to giving my time, energy, and ideas to support and strengthen the place I call home. I do this through avenues such as the City of Ottawa Special Events Committee, the Ottawa Visitors Center Board, the Ottawa Fall Fest Board, the Children’s Exploreum Museum Volunteer Committee, and more,” Poundstone added.

Poundstone’s dedication to Ottawa is so apparent that it has even led to teasing from co-workers.

“The people I work with virtually in Washington D.C. always joke and call me ‘the mayor’ because of how involved I am in Ottawa and how often I talk about community happenings. Even my college friends and coworkers from out of town refer to Ottawa as a ‘Hallmark Town’ based on how I describe it and what they see on my social media. I think I’ve painted it that way over the years because it truly reflects how I feel.

It’s warm, cozy, and inviting,” Poundstone said.

MARION QUINTANA

Cosmetologist and salon owner, Expressions Salon LLC

SETTING AN EXAMPLE Marion Quintana, a cosmetologist, opened her own salon, Expressions Salon, in 2011, overcoming any obstacles in her path.

“When my husband and I first bought it, we were financially tight and taking a big leap of faith. I started with a small space and just myself behind the chair, working hard and hoping to build something meaningful. Over the years, that little salon has grown into a thriving, full team – now including a nail tech, lash tech, barber, and several hairstylists,” Quintana said.

“What makes me proud isn’t just my own success, but the fact that my team is busy, successful, and supported. Watching my coworkers grow, build their clientele, and create their own opportunities has been incredibly rewarding. I’m grateful to have built a place where people feel comfortable, valued, and inspired,” she said.

Quintana, who is 40 and living in Mendota, is inspired to be successful because she wants to be a role model for her children.

“I want them to know that no matter how tough things get, if it’s something you’d truly love and believe in, you never quit,” she said.

Quintana is proud that she’s built her salon up over the years, but also that it reflects her personality.

“My salon is not your average hair salon, and that’s exactly how I like it. It’s a place where clients feel comfortable, welcomed, and truly themselves. I’m a loud, outgoing, and energetic person, and I love creating an environment where people can relax, laugh, and leave feeling their best,” Quintana said.

Quintana cares about Mendota and stays involved to help shape the community.

“I served a six-year term on the Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce board, including time on the executive board, and I stay active with the high school boosters. I also try to stay involved with Reimagined Mendota and any efforts that help beautify our town, support local businesses, and lift the community up,” she said. “I wear a lot of hats – business owner, mom, volunteer, and community advocate – and I give my all to each one.”

A FAN OF FITNESS JJ Raffelson has loved fitness his entire life and has built a career out of that passion.

“When I became a D1 football player, it really became something that I fell in love with even more. After college, I knew I wanted to continue my passion and pay it forward by becoming a trainer. Helping kids, athletes, and adults in their fitness and sport journey has been what I love to do,” Raffelson said.

“I am the owner of JJR Next Level Training, with locations in both LaSalle and Ottawa, where I’m dedicated to helping individuals reach their full potential through fitness, health, and athletic development,” he said. “As the head football coach (at LaSalle-Peru High School), I’m committed to building a program that not only wins more games, but shapes young men into disciplined, confident, successful leaders. Changing students’ lives on the field, in the weight room, and in school is at the heart of everything I do.”

Raffelson is 33 and lives in Utica with his wife and their three children.

“I came to this area because it’s where my wife, Heather, is from, and over time, I’ve grown to love this community as if I had grown up here myself. I’ve met so many incredible people who have supported me, challenged me, and helped shape me into the person I am today,” Raffelson said.

“Being part of this community means a great deal to me, and I truly value every opportunity to make a positive impact on the people I meet. Whether it’s through sports, education, or personal development, I’m passionate about helping others grow, improve, and become the best version of themselves,” he said.

Moving forward, Raffelson wants to continue developing JJR Next Level Training so he can help more people with their health and fitness.

“I will continue giving back to the community that has given so much to me, and I strive every day to be a strong role model for my players, my students, and most importantly, my family. My vision is to lead by example, to serve with purpose, and to create a lasting, positive impact on everyone I have the privilege to work with,” he said.

THRIVING ON CHALLENGES Sara Renner embraces hard work and challenges in both her corporate career and her own small business.

“By day, I balance a full-time corporate career, and by night I run my small business, The SUD Co., which began as a simple passion project creating items for my kids with no prior experience in graphic design, apparel, or production,” Renner said.

“What started as a creative outlet has grown into a business that now supports local schools, booster clubs, sports teams, restaurants, bars, and businesses. I’ve built my company from the ground up while raising a family and navigating life’s challenges along the way,” she said.

Renner, who is 39 and lives in Utica, believes in constantly growing and learning.

“I truly believe it’s never too late to try something new, learn a new skill, or take a risk. I am always willing to share what I’ve learned and help others – whether the opportunity is big or small – because I believe success is meant to be shared,” Renner said.

As someone who grew up in the Illinois Valley, Renner sees this area as a great place to start a small business.

“In the next 5 to 10 years, I see the Illinois Valley continuing to grow through entrepreneurship and revitalized small businesses. I believe we will see more locally owned businesses opening their doors and more residents choosing to invest in this area,” Renner said.

“What excites me most is that I’m already seeing this shift happen. Over the past few years, several of my friends have either started small businesses or purchased existing ones, which speaks volumes about the momentum here. With continued community support, collaboration, and local pride, I truly believe the Illinois Valley has the potential for lasting growth and opportunity for future generations,” she said.

When Renner isn’t working, she is usually spending time outdoors with her family or at a sporting event, cheering for her children.

“It’s especially meaningful to raise my kids here, watching them be part of the same kind of supportive, closeknit community that continues to shape who I am today,” she said.

BLENDING CREATIVITY WITH STRATEGY As social media/e-commerce marketing manager at Kelley Cawley, Nicole Salazar never knows what the workday might bring.

“Most days, I’m planning content, updating the website, launching new arrivals, or designing graphics to pull everything together. There’s always something new coming in, so it’s a constant mix of creativity and figuring out how to tell the story behind what just hit the sales floor,” Salazar said.

“Because we’re a small team, we all wear many hats and step in whenever we’re needed, which keeps me connected to both sides of the business. Some days, I step out of my digital world and onto the sales floor, connecting with customers, helping style them, and seeing what they’re responding to in real time. That balance matters because it helps me keep the online side of the business grounded in the in-store experience and reminds me that behind every post or product, there’s a real person on the other side,” Salazar added.

Salazar, who is 37 and lives in LaSalle, designs and sells custom products through her Etsy shop and completed an MBA in less than a year, earning a 4.0 grade-point average while working full-time. Also active in the community, Salazar was recently appointed to the LaSalle Business Association Board of Directors and enjoys helping at community-centered events.

“My roots in the Illinois Valley run deep. My family is here, my history is here, and this community has shaped who I am in more ways than I can count. While many people may turn up their noses at small towns or see them as places you grow out of, I’ve never viewed small-town life as limiting. I see it as grounded. Intentional. Full of opportunity when you’re willing to invest in it,” Salazar said. “Here, your work is felt. Your effort matters. You’re not just another name – you’re part of the fabric.”

Teacher, Northbrook Middle School, Mendota School District #289

ENCOURAGING COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Brandon Scheppers has been teaching seventh-grade social studies at Northbrook Middle School in Mendota for 15 years. As a teacher, Scheppers tries to find community-based projects students can do, such as last year’s Project Sidewalk that involved seventh- and eighth-grade students.

“We were one of four communities selected from across the U.S. to take part in launching this platform and were one of the only schools that participated. The rest were adult groups,” Scheppers said. “This involved a series of lessons that began with learning about people with disabilities and the role that sidewalk infrastructure plays in their everyday lives. We then built upon that knowledge to help us understand how beneficial sidewalk infrastructure can be for everyone in a community.”

After those lessons, they explored the sidewalks in Mendota.

“Our students personally walked eight miles of Mendota’s sidewalks, looking for issues like curb ramps, cracks, crosswalks, and other areas of improvement. We then used the Project Sidewalk digital platform, which partners with Google Maps, to label two whole city wards of Mendota’s sidewalks, looking for surface issues, curb ramps, crosswalks, and places where there were no sidewalks,” Scheppers, who is 37 and lives in Mendota, said.

“The city of Mendota and the Reimagine Mendota group then used our data to determine the city’s neediest spots for repair and write grants to improve our city’s sidewalk infrastructure. Our students were able to present their work at a city council meeting, and they ultimately used our research to improve the sidewalks around Lincoln school this past summer. My colleague and I were then invited to speak at the Illinois Bike and Walk Summit last spring in Springfield to promote our students’ work and the Project Sidewalk platform,” Scheppers said. “While this project was small in scale, students were able to see their work making real change in their community.”

Scheppers and his wife, Alyssa, have three children, and he helps coach his son’s T-ball team and his daughter’s basketball team.

“I take pride and pleasure in getting the opportunity to teach in my hometown and pay it back in a way by working for the school system that helped foster a love of learning that I am able to pass on to my students today,” Scheppers said.

PAIGE SCOMA Therapist, Empowering Minds

MAKING A DIFFERENCE Paige Scoma, a 29-year-old who lives in Peru, is invested in improving the well-being of residents in the Illinois Valley.

“I am a counselor and educator dedicated to strengthening mental health services and support in the Illinois Valley. As a therapist at Empowering Minds, I help individuals and families navigate trauma, anxiety, life transitions, relationship challenges, and a host of other factors with the goal of making services accessible, supportive, and grounded in skills people can use every day. I care about creating a space where my clients feel understood and equipped to move toward meaningful change,” Scoma said.

“Alongside my clinical practice, I am pursuing my Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision with a focus on rural mental health workforce development. My research explores why rural communities struggle to attract and retain mental health professionals and how training can better prepare future counselors to work in areas like ours. I hope that this work can lead to strong systems of care and more sustainable support for the individuals in the Illinois Valley,” she said.

Counseling is more than a career to Scoma – it’s an opportunity to pay back the community where she grew up.

“I came back to the Illinois Valley after living in Florida and Ohio because I wanted to be a counselor in the place that shaped me. This is where my family lives, where my friends are, and where I feel most at home.

I value the Illinois Valley’s sense of community, its resilience, and the way our residents look out for one another. I always knew that I wanted my work to be a part of our culture,” Scoma said.

The Illinois Valley is also a great place for Scoma to explore her love of music.

“When my schedule allows, I love playing with the local community ensembles, including the Spring Valley Summer Band and the IVCC Concert Band on the bassoon. Music has always been an important part of my life, and staying connected to these groups is a meaningful way for me to participate in our community’s arts culture,” she said.

ARIEL SWANSON Clinical Director, Arukah Institute of Healing

PURSUING COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP With a deep belief in collaboration, Ariel Swanson is helping to expand mental health access in the Illinois Valley and its rural areas.

“I’m the clinical director at the Arukah Institute of Healing, where I have the privilege of working alongside an incredibly dedicated team of clinicians and other mental health professionals. My position is to help create the conditions for them to do what they do best. Together, we’re strengthening outpatient services and expanding access to mental health care across our rural area,” Swanson said.

“I’m passionate about putting pieces together to make our work clearer, more sustainable, and more supportive for both the staff and clients served. Most of the progress we’ve made comes from collaborative problem-solving, listening to what our community needs, and relying on the strengths each team member brings to the table,” Swanson said.

In the years to come, Swanson, who is a 34-year-old Princeton resident, wants to continue to grow as a leader and show up for the community.

“More than anything, I want to continue to pour into people to strengthen our team and continue to create a culture where staff and clients feel safe,” Swanson said.

Swanson treasures living in the Illinois Valley – and being away from it for a while led to the realization of how special it is.

“Leaving the Illinois Valley to pursue my undergrad and graduate studies gave me the perspective I didn’t know I needed. Being away helped me grow, pushed me to figure out who I wanted to be as a professional, a clinician, and showed me what I valued in a community. That time away made me appreciate the Illinois Valley. The connection, the people, and the chance to genuinely make a difference in the Illinois Valley is unmatched,” Swanson said.

Swanson also shows up for the community as a volunteer.

“I currently serve on the board of the Princeton Public School Foundation. I was a founding member and the vice president of the Zearing Child Enrichment Center’s Parent Teacher Organization of 2025,” Swanson said.

“I grew up in the car business and learned early on running a good business goes hand in hand with being a positive part of your community. We annually do food drives, host toy drives, sponsor local sports teams, have free family events, and so much more. That mindset has shaped how I approach my career and how I represent myself every day,” Taylor said.

“My proudest accomplishment, even above winning NADAS Dealer of The Year in 2020, has been opening our new location. We are extremely proud of it and being able to accomplish it as a family. Bringing a new stateof-the-art facility to our community has been an honor and a milestone for our business. Having this facility guarantees us that the future generation will be able to continue our legacy here,” she said.

Taylor, who is 25 and lives in LaSalle, takes community service seriously.

“I donate most of my Wednesday nights to the organization ‘Feed His Starving Children,’ packing and organizing food for children in need. I’ve served meals at the Spring Valley Youth Center on Friday nights.

For five years I’ve, alongside my sister, planned ‘Fill the Truck with Toys,’ sponsoring hundreds of kids every Christmas with gifts. We have also planned ‘Fill the Truck with Food,’ providing the Illinois Valley Food Pantry with food and monetary donations for Thanksgiving,” Taylor said.

“My family’s business, Illinois Valley Auto Group, has sponsored a ‘Make a Wish’ family, providing them with a car. We annually support Cops for Cancer, fulfill wish lists for local teachers, fill ‘little libraries’ around the Illinois Valley with books, sponsor local sports teams, donate to IVAR, PADS, Lighted Way, and so much more.

Whenever an opportunity arises to help, we put an effort towards it,” she said.

One of Taylor’s favorite things about living in the Illinois Valley is the sense of community.

“I love how tight-knit this community is and how much people truly support small businesses. I also love being able to travel and experience new places, but always come back to a place that genuinely feels like home,” she said.

RUTH TEMPEST

Senior Manager, Accenture

BUILDING A LIFE IN THE IV Unlike many people who choose to build a life in the Illinois Valley, Ruth Tempest didn’t grow up here and has no family connections who call this area their home. Since 2020, Tempest has continued her career in Chicago as a senior manager at Accenture, a global consulting firm, while restoring an 1890 home in Peru.

“My work is national and international in scope, but I’ve found a home base in the Illinois Valley,” Tempest said. “I see myself as an advocate for the benefits and livability of the Illinois Valley, from the vantage point of having seen the world through my travels as a global consultant, occasional tourist, and living on all four coasts of the U.S., residing for 7-plus years each over my life in Texas, North Carolina, California, and most recently on the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago.”

After visiting, Tempest felt drawn to the area.

“We had visited to hike at the state parks and fell in love with the nature and history of the Illinois Valley,” Tempest, who is 40 years old, said. “There are many affordable, historic homes in the area in need of love.

I’ve discovered that convenient amenities and access make it exceptionally livable, with culture and local businesses that foster a true community.”

“Over the past five and a half years, we have invested a lot of love and sweat equity into the restoration and improvements of my home and its surrounding gardens, and found wonderful local resources with libraries and museums to learn about and honor the history of LaSalle-Peru and the Illinois River Valley. We’ve also enjoyed watching others in the neighborhood on the same journey to bring new life to the beautiful architecture found in the area. We hope this will be a forever home for our family,” Tempest said. “I think the Illinois Valley is a bit of a hidden gem. I am consistently surprised at how many people do not know about the area and how much it has to offer.”

CORA TRUMBO Phlebotomist, Blood Collection Tech 2, American Red Cross

DOING WORK THAT MATTERS In the various jobs that 26-year-old Cora Trumbo has had, she’s been able to spend her days knowing she’s doing important work.

As the former assistant coordinator for the Epilepsy Advocacy Network, Trumbo, who lives in Peru, was able to help people who have epilepsy – something that matters to her since she was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 14.

“In the last 12 years since my diagnosis, there has been a big increase in awareness and understanding with epilepsy, and I think organizations like the EAN are a big part of that,” Trumbo said.

She recently switched careers and is now a phlebotomist with the American Red Cross.

“I wanted the opportunity to gain a certificate skill to eventually work as a laboratory tech at the blood manufacturing location. I’ve been wanting to work with blood donation and processes for a long time, as my Grandma needed many blood transfusions due to cancer and I myself have anemia and have required them as well. In a small way, I’m hoping to give back and also better myself along the way with the education opportunities the Red Cross offers,” she said.

Trumbo is equally passionate about another role she has.

“I am the chapter president for LaSalle County National Organization for Women. In this role, I help lead a team of people to advocate for women’s equality in the Illinois Valley and beyond,” Trumbo said. “It’s a lifechanging opportunity to see women feel connected and empowered in places they had not previously.”

In addition to LaSalle County National Organization for Women, Trumbo has also volunteered with Open Table Church, Starved Rock Regional Center, and the PADS Shelter.

Trumbo has lived her whole life in the Illinois Valley.

“I think I stay in part because my family is all here – they are my world. But I have also seen the renaissance of the Illinois Valley in the last 20 years – it’s growing and changing and becoming something that I am incredibly proud of. I talk about this place to my friends from out of state like it’s magic. They don’t necessarily get it until they visit,” she said.

CORY URANICH Plant Supervisor, ADM

RETURNING TO HIS ROOTS Cory Uranich grew up in the Illinois Valley but left after high school graduation to join the military.

“I graduated from St. Bede Academy and then went on to serve in two tours of duty in Afghanistan as a Sergeant in the US Army. Once out of the army, I enrolled at the University of Illinois, where I graduated in 2015,” Uranich said.

“I have been with ADM, managing various grain elevator facilities for the last 10 years. I have been managing grain elevators in central Illinois, Springfield, and Kansas City, and now Ottawa in that time. I oversee the loading of grain product for export primarily of the river waterways, as well as managing the finances, and everyday operations of two facilities,” Uranich, a 38-year-old LaSalle resident, added.

Uranich, who is active in the community and hopes to take on additional volunteer roles in the future, shared which professional moments he’s most proud of during his time at ADM and in the military.

“In my previous profession, my two tours of combat duty in Afghanistan will always be the accomplishment that makes me the most proud. Being 18 to 22 and placed into that situation has really shaped the person I am today,” Uranich said.

“From my current profession, our family moved from Springfield, Illinois, to Kansas City, Kansas, to take over a facility that had been affected drastically from flooding and various other mishaps. We were able to take a facility that struggled with quality issues, as well as profitability, and turn it around completely in under a year,” Uranich said.

In 2021, Uranich and his wife moved their family back to the Illinois Valley.

“All three of our children were born outside of the Illinois Valley, so seeing them eating at the same restaurants that my wife and I enjoyed as kids, playing at the same parks, even going to the same school, is really cool. The small-town atmosphere with neighbors riding their bikes over or people stopping to talk to you while they are on walks is something that we didn’t experience until we moved back to the IV,” Uranich said.

SUPPORTING GOOD CAUSES Bailee Wallace uses her time and talents to excel at work and support the causes she believes in. Wallace, a 36-year-old who resides in Peru, is employed as a Human Resources Business Partner at Carus LLC. “I bring strategic HR expertise that has proven to strengthen our organizational culture and advance the long-term success of a major employer in our region. Beyond my work, I serve on the Executive Board of the United Way of Illinois Valley, helping support 15 partner agencies that reach 40,000 community members,” Wallace said. “I’m passionate about the United Way of Illinois Valley because of the direct, local impact that it has on our community.”

Although Wallace has had many meaningful work experiences, she is most proud of helping people realize that HR can be supportive and approachable.

“Some of the moments that mean the most to me are when employees say they didn’t know who else to turn to, so they reached out to me, or when they tell me I’m not like ‘regular HR people.’ Those moments show that I’ve built trust, created a safe space, and made a real difference in someone’s work life,” Wallace said.

“For me, success isn’t just about processes or policies; it’s about being a resource, a listener, and an advocate for employees. Changing that mindset and seeing people feel supported is what makes my work truly rewarding. It’s these connections, more than any single project, that I consider my greatest accomplishments,” she said.

Wallace was born and raised in the Illinois Valley and has no intention of leaving.

“My husband, Tony, and I are now raising our own family here with our two children, Max and Camille.

Staying rooted in the area that shaped me motivates my dedication to helping strengthen the businesses, organizations, and people within it,” she said. “I returned to the Illinois Valley because it’s home – the community that shaped me and instilled my values. I wanted to continue my career, raise my family, and make a meaningful impact in the region that gave me so much.”

ALEXANDRIA WAMHOFF Executive Director, LaSalle County CASA

A VARIED BACKGROUND Alexandria Wamhoff, who graduated from Mendota High School in 2013, was never planning to reside in the Illinois Valley as an adult, but an eye-opening conversation changed those plans.

“When I moved to Chicago for college, I expected to build my life there and never return to a small town. That changed during a class discussion about the U.S. healthcare system, when I mentioned the long distances between hospitals in rural Illinois. My classmates were surprised, having never considered how limited access can be outside urban and suburban areas,” Wamhoff said.

“In that moment, I realized I brought a perspective few others had and that my lived experience could make the greatest impact back home. I returned to the Illinois Valley because I love it and believe I can best serve the community that shaped me and inspired my commitment to helping others,” she said.

Wamhoff, who is 31 and resides in Ladd, has held multiple roles that allowed her to help people and learn new skills.

“I spent five years working in special education at Mendota High School, supporting students with a wide range of needs,” Wamhoff said.

“I later served as Bureau County Coroner, a role that proved to be one of the most meaningful experiences of my career and reinforced my commitment to public service.

Following the 2024 election, I joined LaSalle County CASA. As executive director, I now focus my passion for community service on advocating for children in foster care and strengthening support for vulnerable families throughout LaSalle County,” she said.

The Illinois Valley is an excellent place for Wamhoff to explore another one of her interests – the arts.

“The Illinois Valley is a great place to explore the arts because it’s so community-driven.

Schools and local groups make it easy for people of all ages to get involved, and there’s a lot of pride in supporting local talent,” Wamhoff said.

A LIFE WELL LIVED Ron Borelli was born and raised in Peru, found everything he needed there, and never left.

“I went to school and played sports in the area. I was married and raised my family in Peru. Some of my best memories happened here. I continue to enjoy spending time with my family and friends in the town I grew up in,” Borelli said. “The people here are the best.”

Borelli, who is 84 now, studied computer training at the Gale Institute and worked at James Cahill and Company.

“I then achieved my dream of owning my own business, R/D Computer Sales and Service, which became what is now known as Connecting Point Computer Center. What started as a three-person business grew into the employment of over 100 people throughout my career,” he said. “I am proud of the success of my business and the ability for my son to continue to provide services in the area after my retirement.”

In addition to having a long, fulfilling career before he retired, Borelli volunteered with several organizations, including Rotary, CSO, United Way, IVAC, and Horizon House.

“I pride myself on the public service and volunteer time I was able to devote to our area. I enjoyed assisting other businesses and talking to local schools about career opportunities. I loved collaborating with local business people, coming together to expand and provide opportunities of growth for our city,” he said.

Borelli’s home life has also brought him great joy.

“I have been blessed to share my life with my wife of 63 years, Anne, and raise our three children, of whom I am very proud. I always tried to follow the values instilled in me and always remembered to follow my father’s actions and advice to treat people the way you want to be treated, with empathy and respect,” he said.

FRAN BROLLEY Non-Profit Work

RUNNING FULL STEAM AHEAD No matter what task he’s undertaking in his personal or professional life, Fran Brolley gives it his best.

“I worked in marketing, public relations, and fundraising over a 34-year career at Illinois Valley Community College. Prior to IVCC, I was a reporter at the NewsTribune in LaSalle and two newspapers in southeast Iowa,” Brolley said.

Brolley accomplished a lot during his career at IVCC, but helping to fundraise for the Peter Miller Community Technology Center stands out as a major achievement.

“Working alongside Jerry Corcoran and Reed Wilson, we were able to raise millions for IVCC’s Peter Miller Community Technology Center. Hundreds of students enjoy the Center each day thanks to the generosity of the college’s greatest benefactors: Miller Group Charitable Trust, Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg, William and Dian Taylor, Ralph Scriba, and others,” he said.

Brolley, who is 66 and lives in Shorewood, currently serves as the board president at Lighted Way. He is also a Starved Rock Runners member and is chasing a faster 5K time.

“I’ve run SRR races for 40-plus years and about five years ago joined the Wednesday night ‘Run Club’ led

by Tom Smith, Carol Pratt, and Mitch Hobbs. We have about 10 regulars. Everyone is supportive of each other. I feel like I’ve been gifted another family,” he said.

In addition to his running family, Brolley also has a full home life and social life.

“My wife Mary and I have a combined eight children and 10 grandchildren,” he said. “I’ve been fortunate to get to know a good number of people across the Tri-County area through work, volunteer activities, and recreation.”

Brolley said the Illinois Valley has a lot to offer residents and visitors.

“I’ve been blessed to live and work in the Illinois Valley most of my life,” he said. “With so many hiking, kayaking, and running opportunities, the Illinois Valley is recreation-rich. Aside from its natural beauty, the Illinois Valley is comprised of many individuals who give generously of their time and treasure to better the community.”

KEVIN COLEMAN

Retired Heavy Equipment Operator/Retired Hennepin Village Board President

DEDICATED TO HENNEPIN For decades, Kevin Coleman has worked tirelessly to make the village of Hennepin a great place to live and visit.

“I served on the Village of Hennepin board as trustee for four years beginning in 1993, and then as village president for 28 years beginning in 1997. I retired after the April 16, 2025, regular board meeting,” Coleman said.

“I served on the Hennepin Public Water District for 28 years, many as chairman. I oversaw many updates and improvements to the water/sewer system for the village of Hennepin. I have been a member of the Hennepin Betterment Association for many years,” he said.

Coleman, now 73, has lived in Putnam County since his freshman year of high school and in Hennepin since 1984. He and his wife, Jennifer, have two daughters and two grandchildren.

“I was a heavy equipment operator at the ESK silicon carbide plant near Hennepin beginning in 1979 and worked there for 38 years before retiring in 2017. The plant’s name is currently Washington Mills,” Coleman said.

Of all his professional and volunteer accomplishments, Coleman is most proud of his role as Hennepin Village President.

“During that time, many projects were completed that improved the community. The project I am most proud of was the completion of the Wetlands’ Bridge, connecting the village directly to the Wetlands. The bridge project began as an idea over 20 years ago. Over the years, I worked with many different village trustees, consultants, and funding sources to bring the project to reality. It is my greatest honor that the bridge was named for myself,” he said.

Coleman continues to devote his time to good causes – he is a founding member of the North Central Illinois Economic Development Corporation and serves on its board of directors. He’s also on the executive committee of the North Central Illinois Council of Governments.

“I never really thought about why volunteerism is important to me – it’s just something I have done over the years. It’s always good to help others or your community,” he said.

JENNIFER DUDEK Retired Science Teacher

FROM CLASSROOMS TO THE COMMUNITY Jennifer Dudek’s first year as a science teacher at a small school in Kasbeer, located in Bureau County, was memorable.

“I taught grades 3 through 8 in one classroom. It was a very interesting experience as I had to light my own furnace and clean my own room. I went on to teach for many more years at JFK in Spring Valley and then Putnam County, where I spent my last 20 years of teaching. I loved every minute of teaching. It was so rewarding to see the students learn and meet their goals,” Dudek said.

One experience as a teacher that Dudek is particularly proud of is the Crime Scene Investigations crosscurricular program she created for her school.

“It was teaching students valuable skills in problem solving and teaching them about different investigations around the Putnam, Bureau, and LaSalle counties. It included a hands-on curriculum as well as a reading of novels in their Language Arts class. We also traveled to Starved Rock for a field trip, where I introduced them to the Starved Rock murders,” Dudek said.

“At the completion of the class, students solved a crime in the school building. This was a practicum test that involved reading, writing, and doing science experiments to solve the crime. It is still used today,” Dudek added.

Now retired after 28 years as a science and STEM teacher, the 57-year-old Granville resident continues to make a difference by leaning into volunteerism.

“I currently run a Bunco group at Liberty Village once a month. I am a Hocus Pocus Hag every October. I am in the Illinois Valley Sunrise Rotary, where I am the Youth Exchange Coordinator for our group. I also volunteer at my church, Sacred Heart in Granville, every year for their summer Bible school,” Dudek said.

In addition to staying active in the community, Dudek also has a busy family and home life.

“I have enjoyed many blessings in life. I have a wonderful husband, Mike, and three children that I am very proud of. I have traveled and completed many of the goals that I set out to do,” Dudek said.

RON GROLEAU

Retired Dean of Natural Sciences and Business, Illinois Valley Community College

A DEEP BELIEF IN EDUCATION Ron Groleau was a prominent figure at Illinois Valley Community College before retiring in 2025 after a 39year career.

“During my time at IVCC, I worked as an adjunct instructor, a full-time tenured instructor, and an academic administrator. I was the Dean of the Natural Sciences and Business division for 30 years. This makes me the longest-serving dean in the 100-year history of the college. I also taught anatomy and physiology for my entire 39-year run,” Groleau said.

Groleau was familiar with IVCC before teaching there.

“I am a first-generation college graduate in my family. My associate’s degree is from IVCC, and I hold bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana,” Groleau said.

The professional accomplishment that Groleau is most proud of is teaching anatomy and physiology at the college level for nearly four decades.

“I frequently run into former students who thank me for what I did for them as their instructor. In actuality, they did just as much for me, if not more, in allowing me to be such an important part of their lives,” Groleau said. “I always told my faculty that the best job a person can have is to be a community college instructor. I still believe that today.”

Groleau, who is 66 and resides in Peru, has been married to his wife, Kim, for 43 years. They have one son, Brad, who works as an athletic trainer for the Kansas City Royals organization.

In addition to enjoying a long career at IVCC, Groleau also dedicated decades to other organizations and endeavors, including being a head coach in Peru Little League baseball and Peru Catholic basketball.

“I created the Illinois Valley Community College First Responders unit and served as the coordinator for 25 years,” Groleau said, adding that he also sat on numerous local boards for many years. “In addition to placing a premium value on education, I am also a devoted member to my Catholic faith. I belong to St. Joseph’s Church and St. Rose of Lima Parish in Peru. In my spare time, I enjoy golf, traveling, and attending sporting events.”

MELANIE MALOOLEY THOMPSON Self-Employed CPA, Co-Owner of The Tee Box, Mayor of Spring Valley COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY Spring Valley Mayor Melanie Malooley Thompson has been a lifelong resident of Spring Valley and spends a great deal of time and effort to find ways to strengthen the community.

“This is my hometown, where I raised my family and continue to build for future generations. Every decision I make is guided by pride and a responsibility to leave Spring Valley stronger than I found it,” Malooley Thompson said. “I am most proud of being elected as the first female mayor of Spring Valley and seeing the differences we’ve made in our town over the last five years.”

While being a mayor keeps Malooley Thompson busy, she still finds time for her businesses.

“Professionally, I have owned and operated Melanie Malooley Thompson, CPA & Associates for more than 30 years, guiding businesses and individuals through financial planning, decision making, and tax compliance. My family opened The Tee Box, a casual upscale restaurant and entertainment space, where I am able to combine my love of hospitality with a commitment to quality, consistency, and positive customer experiences,” she said.

Malooley Thompson, who is 55, has many roles in her personal life, including wife, mother of six, and grandmother.

At work, home, or when volunteering with organizations in her hometown, she gives every role her all.

“I am known for my hands-on leadership style, attention to detail, and belief in collaboration and accountability,” she said. “Throughout my career, I have been actively involved in initiatives focused on downtown revitalization, community engagement, and creating welcoming spaces that bring people together. I work closely with local officials, businesses, and volunteers to help plan and support projects and events that enhance quality of life and encourage economic growth.”

Malooley Thompson offered some words of wisdom to the next generation of leaders in the Illinois Valley.

“My advice to future leaders is to stand up for what you believe in, even when it means sometimes standing alone. Choose to do work that matters – works that bring you fulfillment and positively impacts others. When you lead with purpose, integrity, and heart, your life and leadership will be deeply rewarding,” she said.

LYNDA MARLENE MOSHAGE Hospital Chaplain, Carle Bromenn Medical Center

A VARIETY OF LIFE EXPERIENCES Lynda Marlene Moshage, who is 67 years old, has been married to her husband, Ralph, for 45 years and raised their four children on a hobby farm in Waltham Township, north of Utica.

“While Ralph took on the responsibility of full-time employment, I had the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom but also to work part-time as a registered nurse in various settings, as a licensed massage therapist specializing in oncology massage in addition to being an adjunct therapeutic massage instructor at IVCC. Now, in the twilight of my career, I have served the past five years as a trained chaplain in a Normal, Illinois, hospital. For a nurse schooled in the philosophy of holistic health, I am so fortunate to have a career that reflects those personal and professional values,” Moshage said.

Moshage has lived an interesting life, full of unique experiences and hobbies.

“My experience began with a rather sheltered rural upbringing on a small family farm, to meeting the academic challenges of being a student at a major university, to beginning married life as a United States Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa promoting small scale beekeeping, to co-navigating the highs and lows of a growing family in urban and rural settings which included living abroad in northern Spain for 2 and a half years to my present-day settled life, back on the farm,” Moshage said.

In addition to those accomplishments, Moshage has also been an ordained and active deacon at Waltham Presbyterian Church, a volunteer at the LaSalle County Historical Society Museum, a board member for Voluntary Action Center (VAC) of Northern Illinois, a current college trustee of Illinois Valley Community College, and a founding member/director of The Pink Ribbon Club of the Illinois Valley. For years, she and her husband also served as muletenders for the mules from the Lock 16 tourist canal boat experience.

“Despite the twice-a-day chores and regular barn clean-up, it was fun to get to know the mules. They were draftsized animals, so not cuddly by any means. But I certainly grew fond of them and definitely respected their strength and stamina. I better understood why they were chosen as the animal entrusted to pull the canal cargo boats,” Moshage said.

DONNA NORDSTROM

Sales Manager/Project Manager, EdRae Contracting Services Tourism Coordinator, Heritage Corridor Destinations

MANAGING TIME EFFICIENTLY Donna Nordstrom’s busy schedule might be daunting to some, but she’s learned ways to juggle her multiple roles.

“Right now, I am working as the sales manager/project manager for EdRae Contracting Services, our commercial flooring installation company, Monday through Friday, and as a tourism coordinator for Heritage Corridor Destinations Friday afternoons, Saturdays, and Sundays,” Nordstrom said.

“I am a busy person, but am good at planning ahead and allocating my time efficiently. And I am very fortunate to have a husband who is understanding, supportive, and willing to help in many ways and circumstances,” she added.

Nordstrom, who is 63 years old and residing in Ottawa, married her husband 33 years ago, and moved to Ottawa in 1998.

“In 2001, we opened our own business, EdRae Contracting Services. We specialize in flooring installation in the hospitality industry and have worked in hotels, restaurants, and senior living buildings all over the U.S. from Florida to New Hampshire, from Arizona to Washington,” Nordstrom said.

“I have worked in tourism in the region for almost 25 years, sometimes as a paid employee, sometimes as a volunteer. And, although I have lived here for almost 30 years, I am still not ‘local.’ I think this makes me more appreciative of the interesting and unique history and features of Starved Rock Country,” she said.

In addition to her professional roles, Nordstrom has also volunteered extensively in the Illinois Valley.

“For more than 10 years, I was on the board of the Reddick Mansion in Ottawa. While on that board, I chaired various committees, including marketing and insurance. I am still a very active volunteer at the mansion – helping with decorating, hosting and coordinating events, being on various committees, and acting as a docent,” she said.

Nordstrom is also secretary/treasurer for the Wallace-Dickey Cemetery Preservation Association and a board member and treasurer for Epworth Village, a not-for-profit senior citizen living community in Ottawa.

SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESSES Angie Partridge, a 41-year-old who lives in Oglesby, is dedicated both at the office and in the community.

“I am the Practice Administrator for Blanco Kays Corgiat Eyecare and have worked alongside Dr. Jeffrey Blanco since I was 16 years old. I am a certified biller and coder – a role I genuinely enjoy and take pride in,” Partridge said.

After the workday at the office, Partridge devotes a lot of time to many organizations, including We Are Oglesby.

“I have been involved with We Are Oglesby since 2021, when it was called CABO. I have been on the board since 2022, first serving as the marketing officer, then VP, and president since 2025,” Partridge said.

“We Are Oglesby is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the Oglesby community by supporting Oglesby members, encouraging economic growth, and creating initiatives that bring residents and visitors together. Our mission is community improvements and economic growth. We believe that strong communities are built when residents, businesses, and organizations work together to support one another,” Partridge said.

One of Partridge’s interests is supporting local businesses, which can strengthen a community’s overall sense of connection.

“Coming from a blue-collar family that raised me to support local as if there were no other option, the biggest change I’ve seen over the last ten years is a growing disconnect from that mindset. While the expansion of chain stores has brought convenience and opportunity in some ways, it has also created distance in community togetherness,” Partridge said.

“Some of the strongest connections were once made while shopping at local mom-and-pop businesses – people talked, people laughed, and life felt less rushed. Today, that sense of connection feels diminished, leading to isolation in places where community once thrived.

This shift is what continues to drive my passion for advocating community pride, involvement, and rebuilding meaningful local connections,” Partridge added. “I value connection, and there isn’t a person I meet that I don’t want to get to know and build a trusting, meaningful relationship with.”

DEMETRIO “DEMI” SALAZAR Retired, Henry-Senachwine School District

SUPPORTING ATHLETICS AND STUDENTS Coaching is a way of life and a family activity for Demetrio “Demi” Salazar. He has had a long, successful career as an athletic coach – and his wife, Annette, has been there every step of the way. They have four adult children, all of whom have been coaches themselves.

“In 1974, I was a junior in high school. I was asked to help with a basketball program at St. Patrick’s. From there, I found that multiple places could use my help with free programs to assist where needed. So, I helped in many areas when asked,” he said.

Since that time, Salazar has continued to make an impact as a coach – he coached both volleyball and basketball at the high school level and started three travel volleyball teams. He also became the first coach in the IHSA to win regionals at three schools. And even though he retired from the Henry-Senachwine School District, Salazar, who is 67 years old and resides in the outskirts of Princeton, still runs a club of 9-11 volleyball teams.

“So, my wife constantly tells me I’m not really retired,” he said.

Salazar, who has also volunteered extensively with the Girl Scouts over the years and has helped collect money for the less fortunate at Christmas, also encourages young athletes to help others.

“Our donations to charity involve having kids shop for kids. It is such a great learning experience when we take 115 volleyball players, go to Target, and they find out there are kids who are not asking for Xboxes but beds and blankets or coats. The way it changes them is so emotionally moving,” he said.

Salazar hopes that the Illinois Valley will one day have a sports center, so families can stay closer to home for tournaments and other sporting events.

“We go all over, but many families cannot afford to go places for even two to three nights,” Salazar said, adding that the attendance is high at sports centers. “The economic impact is huge. So much is spent on food and hotels at these events. Every business would make more money from the foot traffic. The Illinois Valley is a perfect center hub for this.”

DIANE SCOMA Project Success Counselor, Illinois Valley Community College

A CHAMPION FOR STUDENTS Diane Scoma, a 60-year-old resident of Utica, has made a career out of helping students thrive.

“I grew up in the Illinois Valley, attended high school locally at LP, and began my college journey at Illinois Valley Community College. From there, I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Northern Illinois University and a master’s degree from Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago,” Scoma said.

“I spent several years working in student services at a variety of universities, including NEIU, Roosevelt, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. More than 20 years ago, I came back home to work at IVCC – a decision that has shaped both my career and my sense of purpose,” Scoma added. “I started as an ESL instructor, later worked in Continuing Education, and eventually became a counselor in the TRIO program, Project Success.”

Those roles have allowed Scoma to find and explore a passion for supporting underrepresented groups.

“It was there that I found my calling – helping low-income, first-generation college students, and students with learning or physical differences see their own potential and persist through higher education. For the past 18 years, I’ve been fortunate to walk alongside students in Project Success as they worked toward goals that once felt out of reach,” Scoma said.

“As a first-generation college student myself, I remember what it felt like to navigate college without a roadmap. Many students simply need someone to believe in them, and when they have that support, they can accomplish incredible things,” Scoma said.

Scoma enjoys living in the Illinois Valley and wants to see the area continue to welcome inclusion.

“I grew up here, raised my daughter here, and have deep family roots in the area. It’s a place where people value stability, safety, and looking out for one another,” Scoma said. “Thoughtful investment in education and community connection will be key to building a future where all residents feel valued and able to contribute in meaningful ways.”

MOLLY THRASHER Retired, Lab Tech at T.E.S.T. Inc. AHEAD OF THE CURVE Molly Thrasher, who is 75 years old, retired years ago, but she still fills her days with volunteerism to help her community.

“I have been married for 53 years and am the proud mother of two and grandmother of five. For 52 years, my husband Charlie and I have lived in Ladd, where we raised our children and have been active community members. Though I retired from T.E.S.T. Inc. in 2014, I am never quite idle. I serve on several boards and can usually be found volunteering every day,” she said.

Thrasher doesn’t volunteer for the recognition – it’s simply something she believes in.

“I volunteer because I believe helping others is what we should do. I have spent much of my life serving others where and when needed. It is what I do,” she said.

The accomplishment she is most proud of is developing a weekly summer farmer’s market in Ladd – something she did years ago before other communities started doing the same thing.

“I presented the idea to the village 20 years ago and was encouraged to see if it would fly. It is still flying.

Ladd’s Farmer’s Market provides access to healthy food choices, supports local artisans, and creates a welcoming space that strengthens community spirit and friendship,” Thrasher said. “There’s a need for it.”

Another cause she has supported for years is the Hall Township Food Pantry. She’s a board member of the food pantry, and she’s always impressed by how the community steps up to support that cause.

“What makes the Illinois Valley special is the people who live here. It’s rare to see neighboring towns work together so seamlessly, setting aside boundaries to help one another,” Thrasher said.

“We currently live in a challenging world, and I feel blessed to live in the Illinois Valley, which continues to grow despite the unrest. Communities like Peru, LaSalle, and Spring Valley are strong examples of that growth. We are fortunate to have people with vision who care deeply about our future. I believe the future of the Illinois Valley area shines bright,” she said.
