Little Giants get rare taste of defeat

By Derek Johnson sports@bcrnews.com

DEPUE — The DePue Little Giants met Peoria Christian Chargers on the soccer field Saturday morning facing what has been a tough match-up in the past. Despite the recent history of wide-margin losses, DePue came out swinging against the Chargers applying strong offensive pressure for nearly 40 minutes of the first half. The Giants’ eight shot effort didn’t result in any points though, and the Chargers got on the bus with a 1-0 victory as PC goalie Josh Lehman met the challenge with eight saves. DePue senior goalie Hector Villagomez had 14 saves in the 15-shot Charger barrage. “(Peoria Christian) is number one in their region. They have had

a consistent program year in and year out…last year we lost to them nine to nothing, the year before it was eight to nothing, the year before that it was seven to nothing…we normally get slaughtered by that team,” DePue coach Tim Stevens said. “I’m just so happy we came out with the pressure, and we were able to keep up with a high level team.” The Homecoming loss was just the second of the season for the Little Giants, now 10-2. The Chargers took more command in the second half with Josh Kirby netting the lone goal less than eight minutes (32:34) into the second half. Regarding the turn of events Stevens said, “I think that’s what good teams do. They were stacking their numbers up; they had a good

game plan. They found a way to settle the ball. The thing with my team is I put a lot of pressure on them to play the whole game without substitutions so there was a little fatigue there. I still think the defense locked down pretty good.” Most of the Giants’ shots came in the first half of play. “Our midfield got detached, and we weren’t getting numbers forward, so it was like one person against three and that’s not how we are going to be successful. We just need to learn to organize that better,” Stevens said. • The Little Giants continue its homestand with three more games this week with Roanoke-Benson on Tuesday and Normal Calvary Thursday, both at 4:30 p.m., and Indian Creek for Parents Day at 10 a.m. Saturday.
