TIPS FOR CAREGIVERS Q: I am a caregiver. Do you have any tips for me on dental care?

A: As you no doubt know, patience is the key attribute for a caregiver, whether you’re working with the elderly or someone with a disability. They rely on you to help keep their mouths healthy. The main task is getting their teeth brushed regularly. If you have to do the brushing, here’s how to proceed: First, wash your hands and put on sanitary disposable gloves. Find a location where there’s good light—it doesn’t necessarily have to be the bathroom—and stand or sit where you have a good view of your charge’s teeth. Put a small amount of toothpaste on the brush and brush all surfaces of each tooth. Be careful to brush gently at the gum line. Brush the tongue as well. Help the person rinse with plain water. Incidentally, you might consider whether a powered toothbrush would help you. If the person just needs help brushing, you can make the toothbrush easier to hold by getting a toothbrush that’s manufactured with a large handle, or you can wrap a handle with tape, or put a slit in a tennis ball and insert the handle of the brush into it. Another important concern is making sure the person you’re caring for sees a dentist twice a year for an examination and cleaning. And don’t forget yourself. At your next dental visit, ask for more suggestions.
