Three short years later, in 1999, the Boys Prep team, led by Andy Murray, former Head Coach of the Los Angeles Kings, kicked off what would become a tradition of excellence by winning its first Tier I Boys U18 National Championship title. The Boys Prep team has since won four more National Championships–in 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2007. Also in 2005, 2006 and 2007, the Girls Prep team capped its seasons as three-peat Tier I Women’s U19 National Champions.

In the first year of SSM’s new phase of hockey, players were recruited from all over the country to join in the building of a new program. In its second year, the fledgling program had already garnered enough attention to add a second team. By 1993, SSM had outgrown the local high school hockey league and expanded its season to include a full schedule of USA Hockey games and tournaments. hockey student-athlete at Shattuck-St. Mary’s both studies hard and plays hard. It is this very combination of rigorous college-prep academics and exceptional hockey skill development that sets Shattuck-St. Mary’s apart from other schools and programs. At the heart of the School, is the belief that we are preparing young men and women for life beyond high school. This preparation is first and foremost – academic. The vast majority of our graduates are consistently admitted to their first-choice college choices. Once at college, our graduates report that they are exceedingly well-prepared

academically. When it comes to hockey, our results speak for themselves in terms of placements into Division I and III programs and our growing numbers of alumni in the NHL. And, many of our graduates find great satisfaction participating in club programs at the college level. Hockey passion is fueled at SSM, continues into the college years and beyond.

Founded in 1858, Shattuck-St. Mary’s is one of the oldest college preparatory schools in the Midwest. In 2007-08, our 417 students come from 34 states and 22 countries. With an average class size of 15, and a student to teacher ratio of 7 to 1, our primary goal is to prepare each student not just for college but for a confident life beyond our doors. We seek students of above-average ability and achievement who are eager to take full advantage of the School’s academic program and broad range of extracurricular activities. Students can apply online by visiting the School’s website: www.s-sm.org. For more information about SSM and our application process, please contact the Admissions Office at 800-421-2724 or 507-333-1618.

-HOCKEY NATIONALS-

Girls Score Three-Peat - by Julie Jensen Sometimes, a bit of sibling rivalry is just what is needed. Shattuck-St. Mary’s took a 1-0 lead into the locker room after two periods of the USA Hockey Girls 19 & Under National Championship. Despite the slim lead, the Girls Prep squad might have been forgiven a bit of nonchalance. After all, the Sabres were 53-2-1 and had won consecutive national titles. And, according to Coach Gordie Stafford,“even though the championship was close, we controlled the pace and tempo.” But any temptation to coast, even a just little, was quickly erased. “Coach (Eric) Darwitz got a text message from Coach (Christian) Bragnalo: The boys are national champions! I think the girls just kind of felt like ‘Hey, we’ve got to do it too,’ ”said Coach Stafford. So they did, shutting out Assabet Valley, 2-0, for the three-peat. Monique Lamoureux ’08, who had set up twin Jocelyn ’08 for SSM’s first goal, scored the insurance goal. SSM went 3-0 in round-robin play and defeated the Connecticut Polar Bears, 5-2, in the quarterfinals. The excitement came in the third period of the semifinal game. A 2-0 SSM lead evaporated when Belle Tire scored three goals in six minutes. Jocelyn Lamoureux’s power play goal with less than six minutes left in regulation extended the semifinal into overtime, and Amanda Kessel ’10 punched in the game-winner just seven seconds into the extra period. “The leadership on the bench and the competitive greatness of the girls who had been there before picked us up,”said Coach Stafford. “Paige Keranen ’07 made timely saves that gave the team confidence even though the games were tight. Obviously, the twins stepped up offensively but our defense really clamped it down as well.” “This is the third year of building this program but this is the first year I felt we were favored. It’s a different type of pressure and there’s a different sense of how you have to play. Every team you play, you know you’re going to get their best game. We’re definitely going to be the favorite, given the number of kids we have coming back. I think that just strengthens our resolve to maintain the standards we’ve set.”

Boys U16 Shattuck-St. Mary’s Boys U16 team finished second in its division, losing a 2-1 decision to Belle Tire of Detroit in the championship despite out-shooting the undefeated host team 23-19. SSM goaltender Kevin Murdock made 17 saves. Jack Nicoll ’08 scored SSM’s only goal, assisted by Brad Robbins ’09 and Sam Alfieri ‘09.

Bantam Tier 1 Shattuck-St. Mary’s Bantam Tier I boys team brought home a thirdplace finish, earning a 3-2 record at the national tournament. The Sabres lost in overtime, 4-3, to the Mid-Fairfield (NE) squad that went on to win the bantam championship.

Boys End Up Best - by Julie Jensen Getting better and better, the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Boys Prep team rolled over the Cape Cod Whalers, 5-2, to win USA Hockey’s Tier I 18 & Under national championship. After a 6-5 loss to Belle Tire in round-robin play, SSM defeated the Buffalo Saints, 6-5, and Cape Cod, 5-1, and notched 3-1 victories in the quarterfinals (Colorado) and semis (Russell Stover). “That was kind of the M.O. of all of our teams,” said Coach Tom Ward.“We played better as the week went on. All of our kids are in really good shape and that’s a big part of it, that’s a hallmark of our teams.” The Sabres took a 3-2 lead into the third period on goals by Ben Blood ’07, Stephan Novotny ’08 and Jeff Smith ’07. SSM clinched the victory on Derek Stepan’s ’08 two third-period goals and finished with a 41-17 shots advantage. “Cape Cod had a real good team and their goalie [John Muse] played really well,”said Coach Ward. “He played significantly better in the championship than in the earlier game.” The same, of course, could be said of the Sabres. “We played great the first third of the season, pretty average the middle third and great the last third,”said Coach Ward.“We don’t have any No. 1 NHL draft picks—though some kids may end up there. We had a really young team and this took a team effort from all 20 guys.”

Girls U16 In the Girls U16 division, Logan Murray ’10 scored two of the three goals Shattuck-St. Mary’s scored in the playoffs. Shattuck-St. Mary’s School went winless in the highly competitive pool-play part of the tournament, including a loss to eventual champion Assabet Valley.

tudent-athletes participating in the hockey program at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School have the opportunity to benefit from working with coaches who have an extensive network of collegiate contacts and working with college advisors who have significant experience working with the full spectrum of colleges and universities available in the United States. Coaches and college advisors work together to help each student-athlete develop a potential list of colleges and universities with particular attention paid to the athletic/academic interface. While coaches assist student- athletes in preparing for contact with collegiate coaches and official/unofficial visits, college advisors assist with NCAA Clearinghouse registration, test registration, and application preparation. Shattuck-St. Mary’s School has more than a decade of experience in working with student-athletes who seek to continue their athletic participation at the highest level possible during their college years while also pursuing an

Shattuck-St. Mary’s Hockey Program Welcome to the 2007-08 Shattuck-St. Mary’s Hockey Season! The 2007-08 hockey season is shaping up to be one of our most competitive seasons for all of our teams here at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School. The student-athletes who are in our program this year are as strong as we have ever had. We are all looking forward to following their progress throughout the season. The Girls Prep team won its third consecutive national championship last season and last spring the Girls U16 team made its second trip to the national tournament and performed well in their chance at a national championship in San Jose, CA. Both teams are poised to make a strong bid for titles this spring in West Chester, PA. The Boys Prep, U16 and Bantam Tier I teams all had strong showings at the national tournaments last spring in Frasier, MI and Buffalo, NY, with the Boys Prep coming away with its fifth national title. Overall, all of our teams moved along very nicely throughout the year and the coaching staff was pleased with the level of play and progress of each individual and team. All of us involved with Shattuck-St. Mary’s hockey are excited about great things happening in our School and hockey program. We want to wish all of the teams and coaching staff the best of luck this year! Tom Ward Director of Hockey

Shattuck-St. Mary’s Successes Ryan Duncan In 2007, the Hobey Baker Memorial Award—the most prized trophy in college hockey—was presented to Ryan Duncan, a 2004 graduate of Shattuck-St. Mary’s hailing from Calgary, Alberta. A sophomore forward for the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux, the Hobey Baker winner’s fellow nominees were all upperclassmen (six seniors and three juniors), making his victory slightly unexpected. “Winning the Hobey Baker award was definitely a huge surprise for me,”Duncan humbly acknowledged.“It kind of came out of nowhere. I didn’t even think I was the best player on my own line or my own team, let alone my league or all of college hockey.” Duncan’s devotion to being a team player was shaped by his time at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, where he helped lead the Boys Prep team to the USA Hockey Tier 1 National Championship in 2003.“I believe I became a better hockey player, student, and person because of my time at Shattuck-St. Mary’s,”said Duncan.“I learned so many life lessons during my time there and I definitely wouldn’t be the same person or in the same situation as I am now without the time that I spent at Shattuck-St. Mary’s.”
