Beatrice L. Swinney Memorial Scholarship Fund
Beatrice Swinney was a wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. She was one of fourteen children to Woodrow and Alice Monday. She was born and raised in Putnam County, Eatonton, Georgia. She was the second oldest daughter. After her father passed away, she and her older sister, Annie, had to focus more on helping their mother in caring and providing for their younger siblings. A story she often told was one of her proudest when she moved to Atlanta to work at Mead School and Office Products. With her new job, she was able to buy new coats and provide school supplies for her brothers and sisters. She strongly believed in the honor of working to provide for herself and her family. Although she was never involved in formal education, she was committed to lifelong learning. Acknowledging that her reading was not up to par, she enrolled in Literacy Action, where she greatly improved her reading skills. The Beatrice L. Swinney Memorial Scholarship started as a dream to provide funding for students interested in obtaining work-ready skills and training at the technical college level. This scholarship is an annual, competitive scholarship available to students at Putnam County High School and DeKalb Technical College. The scholarship will be available to students that are interested in pursuing certificates or training at the technical college level that will provide skills necessary to quickly and successfully enter the workforce. Students must be formally admitted into a technical college certificate or training program. They must demonstrate motivation, leadership, and academic potential. Applicants may be an incoming, continuing or returning student. Students must be enrolled during the term the scholarship is awarded. Preference will be given to students that demonstrate a financial need. Applications and further detailed information will be available at Putnam County High School and DeKalb Technical College. All donations are greatly appreciated and go directly towards making a tremendous difference in the lives of students. Donations of any amount by check or money order should be made payable to Putnam County High School or DeKalb Technical College. Please reference the Beatrice L.
