MESSAGE

SCHALK LIEBENBERG KZNRU PRESIDENT

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to JONSSON KINGS PARK for our first home match of the 2020 rugby season. A warm Durban welcome is also extended to the Vodacom Bulls management and players. Rugby fever in South Africa is at an all-time high and this is thanks largely to our Springboks winning the Rugby World Cup. Rugby needed a boost, and this was the ultimate one, that reignited the typical South African passion for the game. The 2020 Vodacom Super Rugby tournament promises to be an exciting one and after a long preseason, the Cell C Sharks are looking forward to getting the show on the road.

We have assembled an exciting squad and excellent management team and take this opportunity to wish Sean Everitt, Lukhanyo Am and the entire Cell C Sharks group the very best for 2020. Thank you to our sponsors and partners, in particular our title sponsor Cell C, our stadium sponsor Jonsson Workwear and our apparel sponsor Canterbury. We value your contribution and investment in our brand. To our fans, thank you for pledging your pride to the Cell C Sharks. We look forward to a fantastic season ahead. SPONSOR’S MESSAGE

VODACOM SUPER RUGBY RETURNS WITH MORE MARVEL MAGIC VODACOM SUPER RUGBY

Inspired by Captain America, Thor, Spider Man and Black Panther, South African rugby fields will come to life with more super hero action from 31 January as Vodacom Super Rugby, one of the toughest competitions in the world, continues its collaboration with Marvel. We have a new generation of rugby heroes in South Africa ready to make their mark in Vodacom Super Rugby in 2020. With three new coaches and a host of exciting new players stepping up to the plate, it’s clear that the four South African franchises intend to build on what the Springboks achieved last year. We’ve seen a re-energised enthusiasm for rugby in South Africa in recent months and that excitement spills over into Vodacom Super Rugby which will continue to impress us with breathtaking rugby played by the best teams and players in the Southern Hemisphere. The South African franchises will yet again show their support for the real super heroes of the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation, with their #TacklingCancer initiative. Vodacom and SuperSport will jointly donate R100 for every tackle by a

South African player during the 2020 Vodacom Super Rugby competition. And this year, fans will also have the opportunity to contribute to this great cause as R1 will be donated to CHOC for every Vodacom Super Rugby ticket purchased. Additionally, Vodacom will have a multitude of out-of-this-world stadium activations involving fans, players and celebrities all aimed at raising even more money for CHOC this season. This will indeed be another season in which heroes in all forms will be celebrated – from the rugby players as the heroes on the field, to the fans for their loyal support, and then our real-life heroes from CHOC. The response to the 2019 season was phenomenal, bringing the inspiration of some of Marvel’s most iconic, loved and recognizable characters to the thrills and excitement of this tournament. We certainly look forward to joining families across the country this coming year to witness all the skill, speed, agility strength, endurance, honour and strategy that brings this collaboration to life in an even more spectacular 2020 season. ¬ CHRIS LAZARUS Managing Executive KZN CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

MATCH PREVIEW

BACK ATTACK The current Cell C Sharks back division is shaping up as one of the most thrilling units in the 25th edition of Vodacom Super Rugby. No doubt, Lukhanyo Am and co will be fizzing to unleash their attacking aptitude from the word go in 2020, and for that to materialise the pack will need to dominate the Vodacom Bulls up front. Barely three months ago, South Africa hammered England 32-12 in Japan to claim their third Rugby World Cup title. Two of the heroes who immortalised their names in the Springbok saga that day were the Cell C Sharks three-quarter duo of Am and Makazole Mapimpi.

10 CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

Remember their nifty little sortie into England territory that led to the latter’s try in the 66th minute - the first ever try by a Saffa in a RWC final! Both Am and Mapimpi, who was the Springboks’ top try-scorer at RWC 2019 with a tally of six, will feature for the Cell C Sharks in tonight’s all-important opening encounter with the Bulls. Another World Cup Springbok, who was dreadfully unlucky not to have played in last year’s RWC final, is the forceful S’bu Nkosi - Mapimpi’s Cell C Sharks’ colleague on the wing. The dreadlocked dynamo is no stranger to the goal-line and will be a chief weapon of attack for the men in black and white. Completing the Cell C Sharks’ back three is the exhilarating Aphelele Fassi at fullback. If anyone who knows how to push the parameters of attack, it is 22-year-old Fassi. His dazzling 50-metre dash through the Stormers defence, which all but ended in a thrilling try, a fortnight ago in Soweto, was a case in point. For the back three to effectively exhibit their obvious style and panache, they will rely heavily on the experience and cohesion of the midfield pair of Am and either big André Esterhuizen or the brazen Marius Louw at inside centre. Another Springbok, Esterhuizen has already established himself as a powerhouse presence in midfield and provides the muscle and experience necessary to complement the flair of Curwin Bosch on his inside, while Louw has developed into a highly competitive centre too. Speaking of Bosch, the 22-year-old pivot gave a sneak preview of what may be in store for opposition

teams in this year’s Super Rugby during the recent Barbarians-Wales match in Cardiff, where he impressed international observers with his slick distribution, booming boot and a striking try. We might just see Bosch realising his massive potential at last. And, in 20-year-old Boeta Chamberlain he has an understudy at 10 who has BMT written all over him. At the base of the scrum, the Cell C Sharks have both experience and youthful exuberance to call upon. A former captain, Louis Schreuder boasts 113 caps’ worth of experience, while the exciting Sanele Nohamba has carried on at senior level where he left off at school, starring in the Cell C Sharks’ Currie Cup campaign last year. Judged by the above, with dangermen scattered across the park, the prospects for the Cell C Sharks in 2020 certainly look exceptionally bright. There is one, major proviso, though. The equally exciting Cell C Sharks pack needs to generate the necessary go-forward ball that will liberate these thrilling backs to outwit, and outrun, their southern hemisphere counterparts. And, it needs to start tonight. The Cell C Sharks need to attack the Bulls up front with physicality and skill, and claim the scrum, lineout and contact area. To be sure, Sean Everitt’s charges need to hit the deck running tonight, as they will be heading down under next week to negotiate four weeks on the road - tackling the Highlanders, Hurricanes, Rebels and Reds away from home. Let the good times roll! CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

LUKHANYO AM IT’S ALL ABOUT A WINNING MINDSET

12 CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

The appointment of Lukhanyo Am as Cell C Sharks captain for the 2020 Vodacom Super Rugby campaign has received universal approval. The Springbok star certainly adds an aura of accomplishment to the role. At the kick-off during Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan, Lukhanyo Am had started in barely half a dozen internationals for South Africa. He could hardly be regarded as an established member of the Springbok squad. Just over a month later, as the final whistle of the RWC final in Yokohama signalled a comprehensive 32-12 win against tournament favourites England, Am had been firmly established as legend of the Springbok saga. Over the course of the tournament, the 26-year-old had emerged as a chief playmaker in the SA midfield and he produced a standout performance in the final, with his deftness of hand, and indeed selflessness, leading to Makazole Mapimpi’s 66th-minute try. “Winning the World Cup has meant the world to me,” Am acknowledged earlier this week, having enjoyed some time off for the magnitude of the RWC feat to sink in. “It is the biggest achievement I could ever have dreamt of. Simply being at the World Cup is a big thing, really special. “However, winning the final is just something else. “Going forward, the World Cup experience has given me a lot of confidence.” As the newly-appointed skipper of the Cell C Sharks, Am will be hoping to bring some of that world-conquering atmosphere to the Vodacom Super Rugby arena. “One has to go into a competition, like Vodacom Super Rugby, with the mindset of winning it,” he says. 13

“WE HAVE AN EXCITING NEW SQUAD OF PLAYERS AND MANAGEMENT, WHO ARE EAGER TO MAKE THEIR MARK AND TO SEE US GROW AS A GROUP.”

“Hopefully the experience of having won the World Cup will rub off on the rest of the Cell C Sharks squad. “We have an exciting new squad of players and management, who are eager to make their mark and to see us grow as a group. We will all be working together with positivity and eagerness, making sure the team always comes first. “It is a huge honour and privilege to be chosen to lead this team of brothers.” One doesn’t have to talk a lot to be a leader. And, Lukhanyo Am certainly isn’t one to shoot his mouth off. He is, however, a deep thinker on the game, and prefers to do most of his talking on the paddock. “One gets different types of leaders, and I’m more of an action type of leader; I like to lead by example,” he admits. “In a team environment like that of the Cell C Sharks, though, communication is key, and that is an aspect that can always grow as one gains experience in the role.” Am will not, however, be required to carry the weight of leadership alone, as a crew of ‘co-leaders’ have been assembled within the Cell C Sharks squad to contribute expert input and support in key zones of the game. 14 CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

“Scrumhalf Louis Schreuder, himself no stranger to a leadership role, will assist with game management,” explained Cell C Sharks coach Sean Everitt. “Andre Esterhuizen will provide defensive support, with another World Cup winner in Makazole Mapimpi managing our transition and Curwin Bosch assisting with our attack. From a forward perspective, Thomas du Toit will assist with set-piece feedback.” The mantle of captaincy, though, could not have been handed to a more popular choice than Lukhanyo Am. From humble beginnings at the Gladiators Rugby Academy at Margate eight years ago, this lad from King William’s Town has swiftly made his mark on the big stage since returning from the Eastern Cape to join forces with the Cell C Sharks four years ago. Am now has 15 Springbok test caps to his name, and has already appeared in 58 Super Rugby games, 48 of which for the Cell C Sharks. “It has been an incredible journey, and in a fairly short space of time,” he admits. “But, the journey is continuing and I still have a big year ahead of me.”

MAJOR MATCHUP

FASSI V GELANT Aphelele Fassi is one of the grooviest attacking talents to have emerged on the SA rugby scene over the past couple of years. A schoolboy prodigy at Dale College, the rangy fullback, who’s equally at home on the wing, wasted no time to force his way into the Cell C Sharks Currie Cup mix in 2018, ran in a try on debut (against the Blue Bulls) and earned his first Premier Division winners’ medal at age 20. A natural footballer, Fassi is deceptively quick and agile for his 1.90m frame, boasts a super silky skillset and has a rapidly improving kicking game. A big Super Rugby season in 2020 could see him attain green and gold sooner rather than later. Warrick Gelant, who has already appeared in nine tests for South Africa, played second fiddle to Willie le Roux during last year’s triumphant RWC campaign. The Outeniqua old boy is a super dangerous attacking fullback nonetheless, as his stunning hat-trick against the Cell C Sharks during the 2018 Vodacom Super Rugby tournament proved. In addition, the 24-year-old already has close on a half a century of Super Rugby caps under the belt, and should put the extensive experience to good use in 2020. Gelant suffered slight concussion during Vodacom Superhero Sunday two weeks ago, but was expected, at the time of print, to be available for today’s match. 26 CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

A RIVETING RIVALRY CELL C SHARKS

VS VODACOM BULLS The Cell C Sharks and Vodacom Bulls have been South Africa’s two most successful Vodacom Super Rugby franchises, since the inaugural Super 12 tournament was staged in 1996.

32 CELL C SHARKS VS VODACOM BULLS

STATS & FACTS DID YOU KNOW THAT... The Cell C Sharks, with the Blues of New Zealand, have jointly appeared in the fourth-most Finals (4), following behind the Crusaders (14) and Brumbies (6);

The Vodacom Bulls have appeared in 3 Finals, but won all 3 of them (2007, 2009, 2010);

Bulls’ flyhalf Morné holds the Super Rugby record for most points (263) in a season (2010); Former Sharks’ fullback Gavin Lawless holds the Super Rugby record for most points (50) in a match (v Highlanders, 1997); Lawless and Sharks legend Stefan Terblanche share the Super Rugby record for most tries (4) in a match, with 18 other players. Since 1996, the Cell C Sharks and Vodacom Bulls have clashed 32 times on the Vodacom Super Rugby stage, with the Cell C Sharks winning 9, the Bulls 20 and 3 matches ending in a draw. The most epic of the 32 encounters between these two sides, and arguably the most dramatic Final in the history of Vodacom Super Rugby, was the Super

14 Final on May 19, 2007, in Durban: The attendance at Jonsson Kings Park was a then Super Rugby record

54,000; The Sharks, who, in a first for South Africa, had topped the 2007 Super 14 table, enjoyed a narrow 14-10 halftime lead courtesy of a runaway try by JP Pietersen and three penalty goals by Percy Montgomery; With barely a couple of minutes left on the clock, Albert van den Berg powered through for a try that afforded The Sharks a seemingly decisive 19-12

lead; However, a missed conversion, followed by a comedy of kicking errors, defensive lapses and refereeing oversights, in the 82nd minute allowed Bryan Habana to score between the sticks and snatch victory from ‘The Sharks’ jaws of

death’... Bulls 20, The Sharks 19.
