PORT OF SPAIN MORPHOLOGY

1757 - 1783

1797 - 1803

1803 - 1960

1960 - present

Port of Spain was founded by Spain and a Colonial Plan called the “Law of the Indies was used as the starting point for the cities design.

A law was pased by the last Spainish Governor that led to extensive French Immigration to Trinidad and growth in trade.

Port of Spain began growing southwards, under British rule until it obtained its independence in 1960.

Port of Spain continued to grow in size and inportance, peaking in the 1960s at about 100,000 people.

Thesis Statement For my thesis project I would like to exercise the revitalizing ability present in architecture through a Transit Oriented Designed master plan that will enhance my selected site (City Gate) through creative design approaches, the incorporation of new cutting edge technology and practical sustainable solutions. In a city, town or suburb a strong connecting factor to unite individual projects (i.e dwellings, places of interest and entertainments and businesses) is essential to its growth, prosperity and overall success. The connecting factor is transportation. Personal means of transit is only one method of going to and from places but ideally a self-sustained city should always has a strong public transportation system that equally serves the needs of every single citizen, despite their economic status and also allow for social engagement and interaction. After assessing the issues of both my site (City Gate) and the City of Port of Spain I would I am proposing the addition of a monorail train station with an accompanying outdoor public plaza, pedestrian bridge, and viewing corridor that will connect the train station to the existing Maxi Taxi Hub and Bus Terminal.
