ago. Jennifer grew up on a farm and wanted to have access to nature right outside her door. Graig, born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, didn’t want to get too far away from city life. And with kids on the way, the local schools were an important factor, too. Education has always been a central element in Graig’s life. Growing up in a blue-collar neighborhood, Graig saw firsthand how access to education shaped the opportunities of his friends. He was the child of college professors, while most of his neighborhood buddies had parents working in steel mills or automanufacturing plants. “It hit me when I got to college,” Graig says. “Some of my friends who I grew up with and who I always perceived as being the same as me just didn’t have the same outcomes.” The research supports that observation.
