The SWASAP Student Leadership Conference was held on September 25-27, 2009 at Sky Ranch in Van, TX. The conference theme was, “Creating a Culture of Excellence”. SWSAP SLC was for all TRIO Students in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. During this conference, the students and staff stayed in cabins at SKY Ranch. The conference programming included various workshops on

Diversity, Goal Settings, Leadership Skills and Strategy Planning. The students participated in a community service project at the Tyler-East Texas Food Bank. TRiO participants also engaged in learning games, swimming, and other events. A scholarship contest was included in this year’s SWASAP SLC. Prior to the conference, participants had to submit an application. In addition to the written application, performance based scholarships were also awarded to select participants. One of the awardees of the performance based scholarship was our very own Muhammad Abdullah. Congratulations Muhammad for your hard work and dedication and to the other 3 UCO Upward Bound participants for being a shining example of a good leader.

Preparing for a College Campus Visit Things to know before you go:

Research the College It’s important to know something about the college before you arrive on its campus. Review the viewbooks, course catalogs, and any other materials the college sends to prospective students Surf their website. Talk to currently enrolled students or alumni about their college.

Scheduling Your Trip Pick a time to go when classes are in session. That way, you can sit in on a lecture, eat in the cafeteria and observe students’ in their day to day activities. Find out how often college tours run, and if you have to sign up in advance. If you’re curious about a club, program, or a sport, arrange to attend a practice, rehearsal, or meeting.

Pack a Camera and Notebook You won’t remember everything that you liked or disliked so this will allow you to keep it all straight.

Importance Checklist Make a list of what college characteristics are most important to you, so you know what to evaluate. Information provided by collegeboard.org
