INSPIRATIONS INSPIRING THINGS TO DO, LEARN AND SHARE

MAY - AUGUST 2018

“Summer was our best season: it was sleeping on the back screened porch in cots, or trying to sleep in the tree house; summer was everything good to eat; it was a thousand colors in a parched landscape; but most of all, summer was Dill.”

– Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird

Inspiration Grows Tall But Starts Small Forgive the poetic beginning to this season’s issue but the seed was planted at summer’s end last year. Seeing the incredible flowers and crops grown and harvested by our residents in the Shannondell Gardens never ceases to amaze. Many readily admit they’ve never grown anything before moving here. So, they start small. Don’t we all ... start small. We read about a Shannondell class, a group or activity, an opportunity to volunteer, to learn, to lend a hand or spread the word and we give it a try. Some we like better than others. But in the process, we break out of comfort zones. We challenge ourselves. And from these efforts, 2

these beginnings come great things – healthy habits, new hobbies, hidden talents, new friends, excitement, even newfound confidence. That’s what this community ... these pages are, really, all about. Whether it’s a dare to don a bathing suit and join a friend in the pool for Aquabata or an opportunity to put your ego aside and try your hand at acting, woodcarving or ballet, consider this your seed catalog. Turn down page corners. Circle listings. Compare notes with neighbors. Then, get busy. After all, it’s May. Time to sow a few seeds and see what grows this summer. It could be that you walk a little taller in August. How inspiring.

GREAT COURSES History haunts this region, so to truly understand Eastern Europe today, it’s necessary to examine its past in the broader context of world history. The first session (April) ends with stirrings of nationalism within the Russian, German and Austrian empires at the turn of the 20th century. The second session (August) picks up with Jewish life in the region leading to The Great War from the perspective of Eastern Europe and postwar policies leading to the Nazi-Soviet Pact. Professor Dr. Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius (UT) also served as a research fellow at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace.

Native Peoples of North America (Part 1 of a 2-part series) Wednesdays: May 16 – June 20, 2 p.m. (Bradford Movie Theater) Fridays: May 18 – June 22, 10 a.m. (Ashcroft Movie Theater) It’s an epic story of resistance and accommodation, persistence and adaption, hardship and survival across 500 years of colonial encounter – all from the perspective of the Native American. In telling the story, Dr. Cobb debunks myths tied to Indian history, including in this first session: the Spanish invasion, the Pueblo War and the French and Indian War. Professor Daniel Cobb (UNC) served as assistant director of the Newberry Library’s D’Arcy McNickle Center for American Indians and Indigenous Studies. His publications include Native Activism in Cold War America and Say We Are Nations.

Living the French Revolution and the Age of Napoleon (Part 1 of a 4-part series) Wednesdays: June 27 – Aug. 1, 2 p.m. (Bradford Movie Theater) Fridays: June 29 – Aug. 3, 10 a.m. (Ashcroft Movie Theater) How did the French attempt to create a democratic republic? How did such an optimistic movement morph into the Terror? Was an authoritarian regime an inevitable response to the Revolution? There are no easy answers; yet they speak to some of the same events in our contemporary history, from the quest for civil rights in the U.S. to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Learn the full story of this captivating period – an era that marked a shift for politics, religion and society – not just for France, but for all of Europe. Professor Suzanne M. Desan (Wisconsin) is a specialist in the history of 18th-century France and author of numerous articles about the French Revolution. 31

From the Apollo Theater and Savoy Ballroom to the notorious Cotton Club, Jazz greats held court and America listened, danced and was never the same. Join us as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance.

No, not Russian collusion. These topics are all the focus of U.S. Supreme Court cases being heard this year. Equal in power to the President and Congress, the Supreme Court is the highest federal court in the country. Now You See It It seems that our need to know how everything works and to avoid deception runs contrary to the natural allure of a magic “trick.” So, when a magician succeeds in both fooling and entertaining us, it’s a feat worthy of, well, a show ... as in The Magic of Chad Juros (page 60). Chad has appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America, Penn & Teller’s Fool Us and Criss Angel’s Mindfreak and in July, he brings his own magic (molded by a touching life story), to the Shannondell stage. Don’t miss this truly magical evening.
