KOCHI’S WATERWAYS Kochi was once a city that relied heavily on its waterways. It was a lifeline to many although in recent years with technological developments and movement towards the city, most have forgotten and severed their ties to the waters of Kochi. The water once provided food and wealth through fishing and farming; transportation, tourism, education and health benefits to the citizens of the city, but nowadays it is a forgotten dumping-ground for waste. Beyond the improved liveability that clear waterways allow, the waterways in Kochi provide a crucial flood restrainer but the increased waste and blockages of them have resulted in devastating floods which have taken the lives of many and ruined livelihoods in recent years.
