Bruce Monighan’s Seven Duties of a Minder Bruce Monighan was a minder for the high-powered US Montesa squad back in the 90s. When people asked him what he did, he would tell them he’s the waterboy, mechanic, parts warehouse, timekeeper, spotter, cheerleader and therapist for his rider. Bruce explains these seven jobs. Water - Number one goal is to keep these guys hydrated. I have seen Lonny Hallsted down 5 liters in a loop. Ryon [Bell] would go through 4 liters on a warm day. If they get low on fluids you get cramping, nausea, and brain fade. I carry the water bottle into every section and offer it to the rider. If he turns me down for two sections in a row I make him drink it. These guys are concentrating so hard they ignore their physical condition until it is too late. If they are not peeing twice a loop you are not giving them enough fluids. The hotter and more humid it is, the more they need liquids. In those conditions it is fluids at every stop, do not take no for an answer. Wrenching - Riders needs vary on this, some will want to do their own minor adjustments as you go along; airscrew, tire pressure, checking spokes. Others will want you to watch this. Ask what they want. In a crash situation you might be changing bars, levers, brake pedals or straightening forks, mufflers and seats. You need to be prepared with a set of tools that will do everything but major surgery. You need to know what size wrenches and allen keys are required, have supply of screwdrivers, crescent wrenches and pliers. Things will be in a panic after the crash or breakdown. You need to create a sense of calm and go through the repair process methodically or you will miss tightening a bolt or leave a part off. Flat tires are something you get used to. With the low tire pressures, especially on rocky conditions, you get punctures. Carry a plug kit with lots of plugs and a CO2 kit to refill the tire. A small hand pump is a good back up and helps if you need to add air when a tire is only a little low on pressure.
