Primitive Series: City. Nature. Avtivities

Spring 2017 Course: 4.152 Instructor: Cristina Parreno Duration: 10 Weeks Contribution Of Applicant: All Parts Conceptual Research, Design, Model-making, Drawings, Renderings Two in one. The idea of the project is to have two logic of usage in one ymca, within the confinement of a small footprint that is governed by the dimensions of the basketball court. Because the site is one of the few large green spaces in the area, the small footprint allows us to free up the ground give it back to the public. In terms of the duality of organizational logics, one logic is to have large, more open and exterior spaces that will host activities that are much group oriented and public driven, while the other logic is to have it much more private and intimate, at a much personal scale. Because of their differences, they also have a different circulation logic. The large exterior active spaces are connected in a spiral fashion that follows the parameter of the building and leads to the rooftop garden. The idea is to use these large activity spaces to bring the public from the ground up, and using these spaces as attractors that draws people up vertically, and thus engaging them in the act of exercising and bonding with one another. The other logic which is the smaller interior spaces, which are subdivided in ways that provides a gradation of occupancy capacities that allows people to engage in activities in small groups and in isolation. One of the most cited problem of the weightroom is that it only draws people who are fit, because the less fit people are intimidated and afraid of being judged. Therefore, this gradation of decreasing occupancy down to individual cells will allow the less fit people to freely engage in their own transformation process. The two systems of organization not only allows the ymca users to have the diversity of spatial conditions they can choose from, but also allows the public to engage the ymca in ways that accentuates the YMCA’s mission of building communities.

Fall 2015 Course: ARCH 405 With Stephanie Rafie Instructor: Martin Bressani Duration: 10 Weeks Contribution Of Applicant: All Parts Conceptual Research, Design, Model-making, Drawings, Renderings Chambly, Quebec is a sub-urban town that is rich in residential properties and poor in public spaces where people can socialize and work. When we were presented with a flat site within Chambly, we imagined a piece of architecture that would emerge from its surrounding landscape as a picturesque silhouette that juxtaposes its flat surroundings and its sub-urban context. I believe architecture is noy only the design of spaces, but the sequence in which those spaces are woven togethere; therefore, aiming to create an architectural promenade that would guide users through a series of diverse spaces inside and outside of the building, we deviated from the stagnant, monolithic box through a series of spatial fragmentation and programmatic grouping. As a result, we created a building that respects the spatial needs of different programs and offers the public with a dynamic architectural experience. The fragmentation has also contributed to the creation of various intimate spaces within the library, which allows the user to experience the spatial comfort of a home while still being loosely aware of various activities within their surroundings.


Exterior Perspective Render The fragmentation of surfaces create diverse terrace spaces that the public can enjoy. Various green spaces are disected and displaced at different levels, allowing the public to experience their surroundings and connect with others at the height of their choice while creating a picturesque architectural promonade around, and into the building.


Perspective Drawing This drawing shows the integration of various terraces with the architecture as well as the relationship of various spaces in relation to one another. There are green spaces of various sizes and heights to accomodate and create different ways people may use the space. The elevated walkway leads the public through this scenic environment and allows them to experience it at a different height than what they may be used to.

Exploded Axonometric (Overall) This exploded anxonometric shows the building is grouped based on four different program, and those volumes are then unified through the main library space and the elevated walkway.

Exploded Axonometric (Components) These sets of drawings illustrates the different spatial arrangement that are adapted to their specific programatic needs. For example, the art gallery space is more fragmented to accentuate the architectural experience in relation to the art, where as the administration space is much more conventional to accommondate the needs of an efficient office space.

Ground Floor Plan This is the floor plan of the main library space that connects all four spaces together. There are two courtyards within the space to allow users to enjoy nature while simultaneously acting as anchor points for pople to find their way around the space. Walls were offset from the courtyard to create pocket of spaces to allow users to experience intimacy within a larger space.

Second Floor Plan This plan shows the configuration of different spaces as well as the elevated walkway that connects all these spaces together.


Section A-A This section shows the relationship between the ground, the building, and its surrounding landscape in relation with the water. The terracing of floors allow users to have loose visual connections with various spaces inside and outside of the building.

Section B-B This section shows the integration of the architecture with the landscape as well as the fragmentation of various floors, terraces, and green spaces.


Art Gallery Perspective Section Floor plates are fragmented and displaced in such a way that allow users to indirectly experience various art pieces within the exhibition space depending on where they are situated.


Library Interior Render The layering of walls and the displacement of various floors creates comfortable workspaces that allow users to experience the coziness of a residential space while maintaining some awareness of surrounding activities.

03 Primitive Series: Loose Oasis

Winter 2015 Course: ARCH 304 Instructor: Ipek Tßreli Duration: 10 Weeks Trees, mountains, and caves are examples of architecture in nature. They are not molded to a man’s dimension, but rather in shapes that spark our own interpretation and imagination of spaces. I have envisioned an architecture that is not solely organized for its functionalities, but also organized via local spatial relationships that encourages people to explore a spectrum of opportunities. Rather than being restrained by the function of the space, people will be free to seek new opportunities and assimilate into spaces through their own interpretations, akin to the architecture of nature. The network of stairs empowers participants with the freedom of choosing how they want to approach and experience various spaces, while simultaneously transforming the entire architecture into a children’s playground. Various areas defined by the overhanging of containers, covering of water-proof fabric, and layering of porous meshes, offer a spectrum of variety and coverage from natural elements. During the harsh summer, the central open space will become an oasis, akin to a forest, where people can socialize comfortably in the shade.


Exterior Perspective Render This picture is showing the juxtaposition between the organic arrangement of the building and rigidity of the refugee camps, as well as how children can use and occupy the space as their playgound.

By introducing more than one levels, the users will be able to break away from the restricted ground view, to a more elevated view of their surroundings.

Breaking away from the rigid arrangement of the camp allows the user to explore spaces in a much more organic, spontaneous way.

The grouping of the various volumes created an informal courtyard that can be used to serve as the much needed communal space.

Section A-A Thiese thumbnail sketches sequentially diagrams how a child may experience the building. Akin to how a child’s play, the building was design and choreographed in a playful manner, complemented by a intricately connected circulation system.

Architecture as Playground

By covering certain areas with a porous mesh that mimics the texture of tree leafs, areas of forest like environment are created.

The volumes are arranged in a way that anticipates future circulation demands from the future tents.

The loose connection between various volumes are akin to the connection between different platforms in a playground, thus the building itself becomes a playground for the kids.

Courtyard Render This picture is depicting the building’s loose spatial arragenment as well as the diffuse lighting condition created by the porous overhang. During hot summer days, this would be a very comfortably shaded area where people can socialize.

04 Primitive Series: [En]Closure

Privitate Residence for an Artist

Winter 2015 Course: ARCH 304 Instructor: Ipek Tßreli Duration: 2 weeks The intention of this project is to design a row house for an artist that will function as both his residence and as a small gallery space. Row houses offer people the ability to economically own a piece of private property in a dense neighborhood, which allows them to experience the richness of the urban fabric while enjoying the various attributes of a private property. However, since row houses are often attached to two other buildings, it often lacks light in the central core. To alleviate the lighting problem at the core, I’ve introduced a vertical garden along one of the walls of the house which will not only allow the artist to enjoy natural diffused light in the entire building, but will also allow the artist to be immersed with nature. Since the site is positioned near a set of train tracks, a buffer zone was created between the main functioning zones and the train tracks to offset the noise and to increase the privacy of the residence.

Restricted Due to its limited perimeter exposure, a typical rowhouse would only receive light near the two exposed facades, leaving the central core of the rowhouse relatively dark.

There is a view of the Montreal’s Saint-Laurent river that can be exploited once one’s view is no longer obstructed by the train-track

The passing trains will generate undesirable noise that may disturb one’s quality of life.

Puncture a hole on the facade to frame the view of the river.

Create a buffer zone between the residential space and the railway to dampen unwanted noise.

Solution:

Perspective Section This drawing shows how various programmatic spaces are place in relation to one another, and how users will be able to experiece the vertical garden anywhere within the architecture.

Human Scale Installation

Fall 2016 Course: 4.023 Wtih Stephan Hermandez and Kevin Marblestone Instructors: William O’Brien Jr. Duration: 4 Weeks Contribution Of Applicant: All Parts Conceptual Research, Design, Model-making, Drawings, Renderings A room can be defined as “a space that can be occupied; especially viewed in terms of whether there is enough.” The project asked to consider the architectural means by which one may constitute interiority in order to establish a relationship with exteriority while monitoring the implications of the design on the transformed identiy of the body. Inspired by the way James Turrell manipulates one’s perception of space, we designed a human scale object that deprives one’s sense of depth. The sensation of depth-less-ness, achieved through the materiality of the fabric and the meticulously crafted frames, enables the object to intrigue one’s imagination. It is through the immobilization of one’s movement and engagement of one’s imagination that the room-ness is achieved.


Frame Detail -

It was critical for us to achieve a zero edge frame at certain prescribed viewing point as a way of augmenting the object’s ability to deprive depth.

We imagined the object can be installed at different locations, engendering different forms as a way of responding to its surroundings.

The assembly process was long and tedious as we had to achieve a certain angle of the frame to achieve the zero edge.


Sample Variability This photograph focuses on how one may approach the object and how the object responds to the context.


Frame Conditions This is a series of diagrams depicting various positions that the angling of the frame needs accomodate, in order to achieve the zero edge effect. The object was constructed with two layers of fabric to achieve uniformity.


Tentative Condition This photograph depicts the object in one of its tentative condition, showing the zero edge effect in play.

Case Study: The Art of Light

Condition Design

Personal Project, Winter 2015 Duration: 2 Weeks I believe there’s an inner urge within us to want to connect with nature and light. The way light strikes a certain wall at a particular time of the day in a particular way can change how that space will be perceived, and has always fascinated me. Enamored by the way light was brought into the Koshino House by Tadao Ando, I’ve created an environment that emulates the strategies he uses in his architecture. Light alone does not make light, there must be darkness for light to respond with power and dignity. This space was concealed by walls to create the material for light to carve into. A small slot on the roof was then introduced to allow the penetration of light- like a sculpture in the making- a line of light that penetrates its way into the darkness. The light is then bounced and reflected by the wall and roof, and thus a space is created. Throughout different times of the day and year, the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection will change, thereby revealing different qualities of the space. Therefore, the space is never mature; rather it is constantly being constructed and reconstructed by nature.

Preserve Darkness The passage is fully enclosed to not only frame a view, but to also create the material for light to carve into.

Invite Light A slot is cut on the roof to allow the penetration of light - like a sculpture in the making - a line of light that penetrates its way into the darkness.

Sensual Engagement A furniture (in this case, a chair) is placed in the scene to engage the viewer, to allow her to imagine how she might experience such furniture in the portrayed space.

Spatial Articulation The pertruding horizontal element casts a sharp diagonal shadow that changes angle throughout different times of the day and year, revealing different spatial qualities.
