WELCOME MESSAGE On behalf of the local organising committee, we warmly welcome you to Malaysia and to the 8th International Conference on Fracture & Strength of Solids 2010 (FEOFS 2010). This is the first time an FEOFS conference is being held in Malaysia. Thus, we are very honoured to have the opportunity to take up this challenge. We are therefore most encouraged by the strong support from the international fracture & strength of solids as well as the experimental & computational mechanics community. With more than 250 participants from 21 countries, this conference should prove to be an excellent opportunity for scientists and researchers from around the world to interact and to exchange ideas. The technical programme comprises of 6 invited keynote lectures and a total of 36 sessions containing 259 presentations scheduled over three days. During this conference, apart from the usual serious academic exchange, we also hope to share with you some sights and sounds of Malaysia. We have planned a visit to a famous landmark in Malaysia on the third day of the conference. This is a unique experience and we are sure you will enjoy it. There will also be an opportunity for you to explore the more rustic part of Malaysia after the conference ends. This conference would not have been possible without our sponsors and supporters. Keynote Speakers Prof. Dr. Simon Wang acquired his BEng and MSc from Tsinghua University. He then obtained his PhD and PD from Birmingham University. Appointed as a lecturer in 1996 and a Senior Lecturer in 2003 at Loughborough University. Awarded a professorship in 2004 from Hebei University of Engineering. Research Interests: Mechanics of materials and structures and applied dynamics.

Dr. Yoshitaka Wada is currently an Associate Professor at Tokyo University of Science, Suwa, Japan. He obtained his B.Eng. and the M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from Tokyo University of Science in 1993 and in 1995 respectively, and Ph.D in Quantum Engineering and Systems Science from University of Tokyo, Japan, in 1998. Research Interests: Machine material/material mechanics, design engineering, machine functional elements and tribology.

Prof Dr. Mohd Nasir Tamin is currently a Professor at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics from the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island, USA in 1997. Awarded MSc & BSc. from the Washington State University, and Northrop University, California, USA respectively. Research interests: Fatigue and fracture mechanics, computational solid mechanics and reliability of microelectronics components.

Prof Dr. Mamtimin Geni is currently attached with the Xinjiang Engineering College, Xinjiang University, China. Research interests: Fracture mechanics, experimental and computational mechanics.

Prof Dr. Ryuji Shioya is currently working as a professor and a researcher at Toyo University, Japan. Research interests: Parallel computing for large scale finite elements.

Prof Dr. Tie-Jun Wang is currently attached with the Department of Engineering Mechanics, Xi'an Jiaotong University, China. Research interests: Fracture mechanics, continuum damage, computational solid mechanics.
