Day Two Tuesday 14th November 2023 10.30am Workshop One Chapel Tom Lyne - Sound and Energy - an introduction From your doorbell to the village church bell, a dog barking, the sound of waves or the wind in the trees, we all have a relationship with sound and vibration. Regardless the quality of your hearing, the energy of sound is a vibration, and the way it moves the air around you will move you. The workshop will touch on bits of history of humans and sound, how sound is used to shape the world around us, things we can do to have fun with sound, and look at ideas around listening as an activity (not just to music). Some of the practical ideas to be explored will include chimes (tone forks), string vibrations, sounds of electrical and wave energy, amplification, and sound design.
Day Two Tuesday 14th November 2023 10.30am Workshop Two Maclean Room Forget me Notes The Forget Me Notes Project aims to combat isolation , build community and enhance communication opportunities using music. This workshop will explore how we maximise the use of music for each participant. We will look at how we respond to sounds and rhythm and enjoy sharing memories around favourite songs we all know and love.

Day Three Wednesday the 15th of November 14.00-16:00 Workshop 1 Clowning Workshop Magdalena Schamberger SGL room Workshop Description Have No Fear! An introduction to clowning for people with lived experience of dementia
Laughter is said to be the shortest distance between people and humour can help us deal with difficult situations. Making mistakes and ‘not knowing’ are part of being human for us all. Clowns remain relaxed and positive in the eye of the unknown. They celebrate their mistakes rather than hide them, and share their confusion rather than being embarrassed by it. Clowns are Uncertainty Experts. In this 2-hour workshop we will playfully explore saying ‘yes’ to the unknown, continuing to breath while embracing uncertainty and sharing laughter when we make mistakes. Have No Fear! If you are good at being bad - you will shine.
“A day without laughter is a day wasted.” - Charlie Chaplin

Research Walking alongside the artistic journey of participants in our Arts Festival has been an ethnographic and arts-basedresearch process recording and documenting their journey and the impact of arts on their wellbeing. Over the course of this year, we have visited virtually and in person, artists in Caithness, Ullapool, Lewis, Uist and Barra. We have visited them in groups, as individuals, and as families with carers and artist mentors in attendance. In doing so, we have travelled far away from our initial research design, and closer to our research philosophy grounded in inclusion, empowerment, self-expression, flexibility, reciprocity, communality and connectivity. Artists have shared their stories of living with dementia and the arts and the intersections of the two for their wellbeing. While we researchers initially envisioned the design of a wellbeing tool by the participants, we have instead drawn on their experiences and put them in conversation with other tools to more fully understand the conditions under which wellbeing thrives. Artists have become co-researchers, recording their journeys with their projects and with each other through interviews, photography, painting and film. We have become co-participants, producing art projects, providing voice-overs, technical assistance and dance experience to festival performances. We have all been in it together. During the festival, we will also gather the experiences of their arts from those who visit the festival and look forward to watching community understanding expand. Throughout this journey where the word ‘dementia’ has rarely been spoken, some consistent themes have emerged: - The importance of places and spaces as anchors for artists living with dementia to gather and express themselves in community. - How conversations of place and life forge connections and identities acting to ‘re-member’ artists and families. - How the arts and arts based activities enable processes of reclamation, reformation/transformation for artists living with dementia, providing connection, identity, meaning, growth, joy and security. - The importance of community engagement for artists living with dementia as individuals contributing to a larger group, as families, as groups and as a community; as well as the support communities provide in reciprocity. - Every artist, every place and every community is different. There is no one recipe for wellbeing. It is a profoundly contextual and personal process and experience.
Perhaps the words of the artists express the power of arts on wellbeing best… “Unearthing hidden treasures” “Opening doors” “The more my dementia develops, the more creative I have become” “Art focuses all the stuff inside onto something purposeful” “Power is about the right to be who you are, not who people want you to be” “I am happy I can still paint, even with the colours” “I look at it and I think – did I do that?” “We love the arts but the most important thing is friendship” “It’s not about what is wrong with us, but what is right with us” “When I sing, I feel worthwhile”
