Healthy for the Holidays

With all of the parties and get-togethers this time of year, there’s no shortage of opportunities to indulge in your favorite dishes and treats, and bend some of those healthy habits you’ve practiced all year. But there are some simple healthy choices you can make while still enjoying everything this season has to offer. Follow these simple tips to keep on track while celebrating this holiday season:

Eat well-balanced meals. Keep yourself full and satisfied. Aim for snacks and meals that include healthy fat, protein, and fiber.

Minimize your liquid calories. Calories in soda, cocktails, and mixers add up quickly, and can take away from the calorie intake you could be getting from nutritious foods that fuel your body in a useful way. Stick to fresh juices (in small amounts), seltzer water, or club soda for carbonation. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water as always!

Make exercise a priority. The holiday season is a busy time a year, but even 20 minutes of exercise can help reduce stress, boost your mood, promote quality sleep, and increase energy. Set a goal to get moving each day, whether it’s going to the gym or even taking a short walk.

Get your rest. Sleeping is an essential part of overall health, positively impacting the body both mentally and physically. It can also help you cut down on your cravings for quick energy fixes like sugary coffee and soda.

PLU #2004 | Reg. $3 99

In 1930, dietician Ruth Graves Wakefield (1905-1977) and her husband, Kenneth, purchased a Cape-Cod style house halfway between Boston and New Bedford, Massachusetts, just outside the town of Whitman. The house, built in 1709, had once been a “truck stop” of sorts, where travelers could rest, and change horses, have a nice meal, and pay any necessary tolls for using the road. Ruth and Kenneth soon turned their new home into a lodge, “The Toll House Inn.” Ruth’s skill in the kitchen, particularly at baking and making mouthwatering desserts, drew in visitors from all over the northeast. One of her favorite recipes, which dated back to Colonial days, was for Butter Drop Do cookies. One version of the recipe called for Baker’s chocolate, and, finding herself without, Ruth chopped up a bar of Nestle Semi-Sweet Chocolate and added the tiny bits to her dough. The chocolate was supposed to melt and spread through the dough. It didn’t. That day in 1937, the history of chocolate chip cookies began.
