Hands On Learning
Full STEAM Ahead To help students learn to think “outside the box,” Fernway kindergarten teachers requested funding for STEAM bins. The bins are filled with tinkering items such as popsicle sticks, toothpicks, and snap cubes to be used in a variety of ways in kindergarten classrooms. Teacher Jennifer Vail created challenge cards for the students to work together to make a particular item, such as a bridge or a house. Says Jean Reinhold, Fernway ERP teacher and IB coordinator, “The opportunity for the students to play together through these STEAM bins was just as important as the learning; through play they became more aware of the materials, and better at collaboration, while they had fun.”
Woodbury Makerspace Wows The Foundation’s Innovation Fund supported the creation of a vibrant new makerspace at Woodbury, where students can tinker with small robotics and circuitry sets. The Foundation also purchased LEGO Simple and Powered Machine kits for students to explore basic design concepts, like mechanisms, structures and forces. The space is perfect for teachers to use with small group activities, and students can also use the space at lunch recess and after school.
Motor On! When a non-profit organization called Motogo offered to bring their mobile shop class to Shaker Middle School for an after-school club, the Foundation jumped on board. Supported by the Innovation Fund, the Motogo Club provided an exciting, hands-on learning experience: Over the course of seven weeks, 12 students took apart three Honda motorcycles - and learned how to put them back together. Says student Addie Weingart, “We got our hands dirty and I got to use hammers, screwdrivers, and socket wrenches. I do many after-school activities, but Motogo was by far my favorite.
Advanced Manufacturing Careers During the 2019-20 school year, the High School was able to introduce two sections of a new Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering class, made possible by the Innovation Fund. Students can put STEAM learning into action using a new, state-of-the-art FANUC robot. This year, several students earned a special certification in working with the FANUC robot that will serve them well in engineering and technology careers right out of high school or in further study at the university level.

Family Engagement The Foundation has supported PreK Family Inquiry Nights over the past two years, where Shaker PreK families gather together to have dinner, participate in an activity, and take home a book. The events are specially designed to increase parent participation in this critical development stage and to help them feel prepared to enter kindergarten. At Engineering Night, shown here, students got to build and race their own boats in a Raingutter Regatta.
Social/Emotional Learning The Shaker Heights High School Classes of 1950/51, working with the Shaker Schools Foundation, generously donated funding for a social-emotional learning curriculum that was piloted in the 2018-19 school year at Lomond Elementary School. The “Caring School Community” program builds classroom and school-wide community while building social/emotional skills. Due to the pilot’s impact and success, the District has now rolled out the program to all students in Grades K-8.
New Fernway Playscape After the devastating fire at Fernway Elementary School in July of 2018, which rendered the building unusable for two school years, Fernway students, staff, and community members are excited to see the newly renovated and modernized building slated to open this fall. As part of that process, Fernway students and community members will soon be able to enjoy an enhanced playscape area, thanks to many generous donors and a grant secured by the Shaker Schools Foundation from the equipment supplier.
Inclusive Learning Students in the intervention classes at Shaker Heights High School learned valuable real-world life skills by delivering coffee and bakery items several days each week. The Foundation secured funding from the Veale Youth Entrepreneurship Forum for a coffee maker, prep table, cash box and cart so that students could learn the different roles involved in this entrepreneurial venture.

Collaboration High school students enjoyed putting some advanced recording and performance technology to use in their music composition class this year. The Foundation supported the purchase of MIDI keyboards, MIDI controllers, and a high-quality audio recorder and microphones, which students used to manipulate sounds and mix their compositions. They used the recorder to capture live performances and upload them to the classroom website so they could critique their work.
Creativity High school jewelry classes also upped their game this year, thanks to a new “Form 3” 3-D printer and casting equipment provided by the Shaker Schools Foundation. The new tools allowed students to take concepts from their imagination to reality by creating a printed wax model and then casting them into metal. Says jewelry student David Szoke, “With these new technologies, we were able to design and create resin models of our jewelry at a professional level.”
Ingenuity A new programmable embroidery machine offered a group of high school students yet another way to exercise their artistic license and flex their entrepreneurial muscles: by upcycling thrift store clothing items into beautiful new creations. Students then sold the items through their business, CyCLE clothing, donating 100 percent of the profits to charity. Says high school student Louise Spadoni, “You can make nearly perfect designs so that it looks like something you could buy in the store.”
Design The Foundation brought state-of-the-art technology to the high school’s graphic design classes with the purchase of 25 Huion Tablets. Students took to the new equipment quickly, designing professional logos and branding materials for local businesses. Says awardwinning art student Grace McCormack, “These tablets enable us to work on the same equipment we’d be using if we were out in the real world.”

Visiting Artists The Foundation supports numerous visiting artists and authors each year who help expand our students’ cultural horizons. For example, Lomond students enjoyed a visit from the West African Rhythm through Drumming and Dance program, led by native West African Sogbety Diomande. The students learned basic techniques of hand drumming and how to identify the three sounds of the African djembe drum.
Field Trips A visit from COSI on Wheels is a highlight for many elementary students. It always means a day filled with hands-on activities and fun while learning about science. The Foundation is proud to support numerous field trips and visits to a wide range of cultural organizations each year.
Co-Curriculars The Foundation supports learning gardens at Lomond, Onaway, and the High School which provide students a valuable opportunity to learn and collaborate outside of the classroom. Students can learn about environmental issues, life cycles, building, designing, and teamwork while enjoying the sensory delights of touch, taste, sight, and smell.
Student Travel The Foundation’s Student Opportunity Assistance Fund allows Shaker students to become global ambassadors, taking them to the four corners of the world. The fund helps students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to travel with the band, orchestra, service trips, and cultural exchange programs. Over the past year, donations to this fund helped orchestra students travel to New York City to compete in the National Orchestra Cup Competition at Lincoln Center, to Tanzania for a service opportunity, and to Germany to participate in the Goslar Exchange program.

Talented Shaker Alumni Share Their Gifts This popular speaker series, launched in 2017, features notable Shaker alumni who share their insights in an intimate setting, with proceeds benefiting the Shaker Schools Foundation. Last fall, the series featured two talented alumni: Aaron David Miller, Class of 1967, led a spirited discussion about politics and foreign policy based on his extensive experience as a middle east and global policy analyst. Aaron is a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace where he focuses on American diplomacy and US foreign policy. Despite the fact that a major storm knocked out the power during Aaron’s visit, he took questions from the guests for over an hour, responding openly and honestly. He is clearly passionate about his work in global affairs, yet proudly still refers to Shaker Heights as his home despite living out of state for many years. Jamie Babbit, Class of 1989, gave the audience a fascinating, behindthe-scenes look at the role of a Los Angeles director, based on her experiences directing the hit series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Gilmore Girls as well as feature films like Fresno and But I’m a Cheerleader. It was particularly meaningful to have Jamie introduced by alumna Lucy Richman, Class of 2014, who received the Nikki Babbit award (named for Jamie’s sister) as a senior at Shaker Heights High School in recognition of her outstanding technical work for the theatre department. 14
The Legacy Society The Shaker Schools Foundation continues to raise funds for the permanent endowment, which will provide long-term, substantial support to the Shaker schools in the areas of academia, arts, technology, health and fitness, and special initiatives. We welcome bequests, trusts, other planned gifts, and outright gifts. These contributions will help ensure the enrichment of education in the Shaker Heights Schools far into the future. Donors who make a significant outright gift or indicate that they have provided for the Foundation in their estate planning are entitled to membership in the Legacy Society. Please call the Foundation office at 216-295-4329 for details. We are grateful for the vision of these donors and their belief in the value of a Shaker schools’ education.

A Night for the Red & White 2020
A Night to Remember The 28th annual A Night for the Red & White, held at the Hilton Cleveland Downtown on March 7, was a wonderful outpouring of support for the Shaker Schools. Highlights included:
• Nearly 600 attended, including Shaker parents from every neighborhood, alumni, teachers, administrators, and community members.
• Emcee Michael Tate, Class of ‘85, kept us entertained and added extra sparkle to the evening, helping us to raise more than $50,000 in direct donations to the Innovation Fund, exceeding our goal of $40,000. Those funds will be instrumental in supporting the District’s i3 initiative of Inquiry, Innovation and Imagination and provide hands-on STEAM learning for every Shaker student!
• Key to the success of this year’s fundraiser was the increase in corporate support from
sponsorships, generous donations from businesses and individuals to the silent auction, and advertisements from local companies.
• This support resulted in an impressive and impactful 13 percent increase in net revenue over our 2019 event, which translates into more funds to support the District’s i3 initiative.
• Talented students entertained us with performances from VocalEase, Chanticleers, Jazz
Ensemble and Jazz Combo, as well as roving caricature artists. Guests also enjoyed interactive exhibits on robotics and green screen technology, as well as student artwork.
• We honored the founding co-chairs of the first ever A Night for the Red & White, Freda
Levenson and K.J. Montgomery. We thank them for their ongoing support and dedication to the Shaker Schools!
• Special thank you to our four executive co-chairs: Sarah Brandon Bowen, Mity Fowler,
Lauren Martin, and Marla Walker, along with our committee of volunteers, for their time and dedication to making this event a success.
