We are currently seeking volunteers to help out with various tasks for the club during 2009. It is sometimes easy to neglect how much work is required to keep a successful club of this size running smoothly throughout the season. Even the smallest amount of assistance is greatly appreciated and contributes significantly to the overall operation and success of Roselands FC. As always we constantly need assistance with canteen, BBQ, field set up, coaching, managing etc etc! Remember that the club is all of us and we all need to be involved to make it all happen. As the old saying goes,” many hands make light work.” We ask that anyone that considers themselves able to help out in any capacity no matter how insignificant it may seem, please

Channels of Communication There are many channels of communication within our club. These include email, SMS, the web site, the Striker and the pigeon holes located in the club house. As all of you are in the club house at some point during the week for training, could you please remember to check your pigeon holes. There is a host of information put in them most weeks about

upcoming games, canteen rosters and club news. All of which will help you keep your players and parents well informed and will allow you and the parents to organise their time. For up to date information, the best place to check is the web site. Having said that, please also note that there are certain things that are not posted on the web and are only placed in your pigeon holes. So please check them. If you cannot find information through these sources, as always the members of the EC are more than happy to answer any questions, direct or help you in any way we can.

Coach Talk Positions If you coach the Under 6, Under 8, or Under 10 year old age groups you have probably found yourself trying to explain to your kids what position they are going to play for a game, and where they are supposed to play. Likewise, if you have a child on the field you want them to have a basic understanding of what their role is in each game. Usually what you end up with is a mass of kids running like a solid mass up and down the field. © Copyright 2010 Roselands FC All Rights Reserved

I made these two diagrams for my U8 team which i used to coach and saw great improvement in just two practices and in the first game since implementation. Especially with strikers who thought that a forward ran all over the field like a midfielder!

We labeled the defenders the “Red Zone”. The arrows represent the space on the field that the defenders will normally occupy during a game.

Coaching Philosophies

The Midfielders are the “Blue Zone” and the arrows likewise show were midfielders will shift for a game.

Drill of the Week Ball Control This soccer coaching session looks at core ball control skills. You only need six players to complete the drill, though it can easily be expanded to meet your needs. With lots more players you could have a number of grids working at the same time. What you tell your players the soccer drill is about: 1. Improving ball familiarity and touch. 2. Developing turning and dribbling skills. What you tell your players to do in the drill: 1. Experiment with different body surfaces to control, move and pass the ball. 2. Juggle and shuffle the ball between different surfaces. 3. Move the ball around with different parts of the foot. 4. Try to combine movements like turning and passing. 5. Develop “feinting” movements to disguise your intentions. What to shout: •

“Faster” “slower” / “stop” “start.”

“Don’t look at the ball,” “flick it up,” “get it down.”

“Turn,” “shuffle.”

“Dribble” / “pass,” “change balls.”

“Keep it close.”

What to look for in this soccer (football) drill: •

Players allowing the ball out of their playing distance.

Players repeating the same thing, get them to experiment.

Getting too close to others, bumping each other.

Not using all surfaces and especially both feet.

Trying things which are impractical or too difficult.

Good combinations highlight them.

What to think about: © Copyright 2010 Roselands FC All Rights Reserved

5

Where would your players use these skills in the game? When would these skills come in handy in a match? Why would they do something clever in a soccer (football) game? Use the coaching drill to highlight these thoughts. What you get your players to do in the soccer drill: Stage 1: In a 20m x 20m grid give every player a ball (10-12 players). Instruct them to move the ball around the grid without touching anyone else or leaving the grid. They must visit each corner and travel diagonally as well as side to side. The object is simply to keep control of the ball and travel using different surfaces of the foot to move it. Stage 2: Players must meet the same objectives but now react to the calls of the coach as in “what to shout” give them a range of tasks and make up your own, get them to add some too. “Shuffle” means play the ball between alternate feet quickly on one touch. “Change” would mean each player stops the ball dead and runs to change to another. Encourage players to experiment and demonstrate ideas.

Develop the drill Have a competition, this is a safe way to introduce tackling into the drill too. A player may knock another‘s ball out of the square but only with their own ball under control. Last one in is the winner. Try it in teams (reds v blues). How would I put this soccer drill into a game situation: Play a 5v5 (6v6) game on a pitch 50m / 60m x 35m /40m. Divide the pitch into thirds and restrict the players to zones. A player can move forward into the next zone by beating a player, turning with a clever move or a trick. Players in the final third can only score as a consequence of a clever move trick or turn then they can shoot.

Joke of the Week Two men were at a football match and it was just seconds away from kick-off. "Man," said the first man... "I'm bursting for a pee, and the toilets are miles away" "Don't worry," said the second man... "You see that bloke in front of you? Just pee up his leg." "Are you crazy?" said the first man... "that bloke's massive." "Oh," said the second man... "he won't notice anything." "How do you know?" said the first man. "Because I've just peed up yours!" said the second man.

MATCH REPORT WRITERS, COACHES AND MANAGERS ...across all grades and ages we’d greatly appreciate all teams having a match report submitted. It takes just a few minutes and is enjoyed by most players and parents. With so many teams trying so hard to break into a winning run and others overcoming all sorts of difficulties, many people read all the match reports. Keep them coming and if you feel it appropriate to share the workload around, that’s ok, but we do ask that this be organised through your manager.

CAN’T FIND YOUR TEAMS MATCH REPORT LISTED IN THE FOLLOWING PAGES? Then refer to your teams coach or manager, chances are that they haven’t submitted one yet. It’s very simple to do... go to our home page, click on “Match report”... and fill in the blanks!!

U16/1 vs Marrickville |Won 1-0 | DATE: 02/05/10 ROUND: 4 Match Report: Today’s match was won by our defensive effort, not only by the backs but also up front. We came up against a well disciplined and coached team and from the results so far this season we knew we would be in for a tough morning. The single goal was scored midway through the first half by Omar from a corner rising above the rest and heading into the goals. The rest of the first half was either team’s way, opportunities made by both teams but not finding the net. Both keepers were kept busy and produced some fine saves, also with the upright and crossbars doing their part in keeping the ball out. Half time could not come soon enough for our players wanting that break and to gather their thoughts. The team talk at half time was about our defence, marking close to their player and frustrating them out of the game. Marrickville dominated the second half catching us out a couple of times but we scrambled well and our defence stood tall for enabling us to come away with the three points. Welcome to Nickolas who made a telling contribution, his experience will enhance the team once he settles in. Congratulations Gentlemen on a fine performance, you certainly deserved the victory and made us all proud. Thank you to all our supporters. AA/2 vs Strathfield |Drew 1-1 | DATE: 01/05/10 ROUND: 4 Match Report: We began the double header weekend with a skeleton crew of 11 lads. We started the game against a physical Strathfield team comprised of all Irish imports playing some good attacking flowing football. The luck of the Irish was with our opposition and things turned for the worst after around 10 minutes when young Ahmid was sent off for 2 unfortunately yellow cards. After conceding a goal around the mid of first half the Raptors fought very hard to claw there way back into the game. Into the second half we were rewarded for our efforts by stealing an equaliser and held on for the game to end up as a 1-1 draw. It was a very phyical game and the team all wroked extremely hard to get an excellent result. Exceptional effort by all but in particular star of the match had to be in form keeper Matt "Mankini" Manos who pulled off some amazing saves to keep the game at a draw. Well done fellas COACH NAME: Paul Glekas

MANAGER NAME: Peter Stellios

AA/2 vs Marrickville A |Lost 2-3 | DATE: 02/05/10 ROUND: 17 Match Report: The curse of the double header weekend stood over us in 2010 after last seasons dismal results for the Raptors.Once again we started with only 11 players and without the presence of inform keeper Matthew Manos it was always an uphill battle. Unfortunately football can sometimes be a cruel game and even though we dominated the majority of the game and maintained a lot of pressure on the Red Devils, we could not find the back of net. On the contrary it took the Reds only 3 chances for them to find the net and despite some last minute attack we seemed to of run out of time in chasing the game.We had some excellent opportunities to equalise but were extremely unlucky (next time Alex). End result was a 3-2 loss to the Reds. In saying all this, it is worth making a mention to the 10 core players who did exceptionally well to playing 2 full games on the weekend (especially those nursing a nasty hangover over there saturday evening antics - I could of sworn Jonathan was sweating Southern Comfort I could smell it from 10 metres away). At our age & fitness, 180 minutes of football over 2 days is really a herculian effort of all. Well done COACH NAME: Paul Glekas

Match Reports from Previous Rounds

Round 1 U9/8 vs Balmain B |Won 3-0 | DATE: 10/04/10 ROUND: 1 Match Report: Hi All, what a great start to the season, the boys did it tough having to start match with 5 players (Cohen Park is worst ground to find in Sydney!!!), the lads played most of the 1st half with 5 players and they managed to hold their own during this time missing several chances, in fact we took a surprise 1 - 0 lead half way through the 1st half via Joshua Pepping. Our new player Sean Rykmans had a great game in defense and attack, goal keeper Georgios Georgellis also pulled off a great save to keep score at 1 0. Reinenforcements finally arrived towards the end of the 1st half to bring our team up to 7 players. In the 2nd half the lads started to dominate missing more chances on goal, the goals finally arrived via Thomas Kokaliris and Charbel Azzi for a final score of 3 0. Coach Con K and Manager Peter G are very proud of the boys and we are all looking forward to next weeks game at home. Well done boys and keep up the great work!!! COACH NAME: Con Kakoliris

U11/5 vs Marrickville |Won 2-0 | DATE: 10/04/10 ROUND: 1 Match Report: A great start to the season, with a well deserved win. We dominated the game with some great passing especially in the midfield, between Braddon, Mohammed, Anthony, Tom and Martin. Defence was solid with Bilal, Michael, Mark and Christian simply blocking every attack. Both Stephen and Tom had a good game in each half in goal with both saving some powerful shots. Up front Noah had some great opportunities but in the end two goals made the difference. A great passing game which if we stick to will see a great team this year. Well done boys!!! U16/1 vs Interlions |Drew 1-1 | DATE: 11/04/10 ROUND: 1 Match Report: Welcome to another season and one that we hope to go one better tham last season and finish premiers, Although this season we will be competing in the top division in the CDSFA's u16's competition. Welcome back to all the players who insisted I stick around for another year especially in first division, thank you to all again for the opportunity to coach. Thank you to Renato for taking up the Managers role again all be it for a few weeks then off to your well planned and eager European Holiday. Hope the sun shines most of your trip but also enjoy a couple of days with rain, maybe in Paris. We welcome two new players to our squad Ahmed and Bilal who bring their own qualities to the team, they have settled in well and look forward to a successful season with us. Today's game would be a test for us playing a team who competed in last season first divison but we would be playing with nothing to lose. The end result is a pleasing one for us after defending strongly a nd losing our captain and stopper 10 minutes into the match the one all result thanks to some excellent keeping by Christopher today would be one to work on from their. We started well and scored first through Omar from some good lead up work and a great strike. The opposition's goal came from a set corner piece, which showed us we need to work on our defence from corners. Not only did Joseph receive a game ending injury but also some of the others who played on to show their commitment. Congratulations boys on your efforts today 'Welcome to First grade'. Thank you to the parents for their wonderful support once again. COACH NAME: John Mamatsi MANAGER NAME: Renato Santos

U16/2 Girls vs Hurlstone Park |Won 7-0 | DATE: 11/04/10 ROUND: 1 Match Report: On Sunday the 16/2 girls played Hurlstone Park, although Hurlstone Park only field 9 players, they still put in a good effort in their defensive work and gave our girls something to work hard at. Thanks to Jeff Gissing & Wayne Morris who organised another player for us so we could field a fulll team. Sara Mitchell u/14 girls joined our team for the day and as usual you can expect nothing less than excellent football from Sara. She maybe small but has no reservations in her ability to tackle the ball & make good use of it to our advantage. Thank you Sara for helping us out. Our team played wonderfully in the game they put together many great passes and the strikers and midfielders hammered the opposition keeper by getting around the defense and then realeasing powerful shots. There were some players that stood out, for example Nicole Actypis scored a cracking three goals in just one half of the game. Another stand out was Rana El-Husseini who scored two goals ! and was beating the defense without trouble. Sanja Jesic showed beautiful ball skills by giving the strikers wonderful opportunities with her pin-point passes. There was one moment in the second half where Shae McCarney made a break down the wing then supplied the perfect cross to striker Rana El-Husseini who hit the ball on the full and it flew to the back of the net. The girls were celebrating when the referee called it offside but it was still a great attempt. Overall the whole team played beautifully and we would like to thank Wanye Morris for coaching over the absence of usual coach John English. COACH NAME: John English MANAGER NAME: Karen McCarney

Round 2 U9/8 vs Balmain |Won 3-2 | DATE: 17/04/10 ROUND: 2 Match Report: Hi All, Another great game by the lads today, the boys had to do it the hard way coming from 2 - 1 down during the 2nd half to run out 3 - 2 winners. Goals from Abdelkareem R, Thomas K and Joshua P were enough to get the boys over the line. Special mention to Fadhil Akbar who was man of the match, he pulled off same great saves in the 2nd half. Good performances from Alexander S, Alexandrer H, Sean R, Charbel A and Georgios G along with Abdelkareem R, Thomas K and Joshua P were enough to hold out Balmain today. The boys missed several chances today and hopefully they will go in next week. Thanks again. Cheers Peter COACH NAME: Con Kakoliris

U11/5 vs Canterbury |Won 4-3 | DATE: 17/04/10 ROUND: 2 Match Report: Once again a spirited win from the boys. Tha game generally played well although with the heat it was difficult to keep running for the full 50 minutes. There were moments of magical play as the passing game brought the midfield forward to attack their goal on numerous occasions, although the opposition kept coming back. Two goals from Tom, one from Braddon and one from Kevin got us on the winning sheet but it was a team effort from everyone that made us get there. Well done to all for a great effort, COACH NAME: Jim Plater

U16/1 vs Leichhardt Tigers |Won 4-2 | DATE: 18/04/10 ROUND: 2 Match Report: What a pleasing result and attitude by the players once they took the field today. After a dressing down for the ones that were late the lads were told what they were in for against a committed LEICHHARDT TIGERS (not apia) outfit. From the kick off we attacked and could have scored within the first minute but that was not to be. We fell behind to a goal that beat us on the offside trap and sustained some pressure in our own half and the Leichhardt dominated the possession for quite a period in the first half yet could only manage one goal against us, but from there on it was all Roselands. We played some good quality football and scored some good goals. We let Leichhardt back into the match with a selfish goal to bring the score to 3-2 but we picked up from that and scored one more to seal the match. We have a few lessons to learn about not talking back to the referee, he controlled the game well and was consistent all you can ask for, especially when he had no linesmen. Well done lads todays effort and result was one the coaching staff, parents and supporters were proud of. Thank you once again to our supporters. COACH NAME: John Mamatsi MANAGER NAME: Renato Santos

U16/2 Girls vs Russel Lea |Drew 1-1 | DATE: 18/04/10 ROUND: 2 Match Report: Hi Girls Good game today. I hope you all enjoyed the run and continue to improve your confidence and soccer skills, which are critical for any success at the back end of the season. We all recognise the significant ball skills of our opposition today. If I had my wish, we would play them EVERY week, 'cause we can learn from their play. How many shots did they take on goal, especially in the 1st half? They shot from well outside the goal box! An excellent ploy! Fortunately, Elizabeth had a great day in goals and kept us competitive. Their corners were well hit and they causes constant headaches to our defence backline. Chrystalla, Shella and Alex did very well to help restrict the shots to "long shots". Mariah added some much needed experience and confidence as soon as she entered the field. It wasn't what she did, but rather what she said. Keeping it positive, she guided the others to where they needed to be. Hopefully, Mariah can bring that sort of leadershi p to training!!!! Diana tried hard and will improve with every experience. As with Shella, Sanja and Marissa, will need to continue to improve their possession skills, challenge skills and work on where to put the ball for the supporting players. Maryanne was tireless. Bronte, Shae and Jodie covered all the field and were constantly "on the front foot", looking to further contribute to the team effort! Rana's goal came against the run of play, but testament to our solid defence. Excellent skills to put the ball forward into vacant space and hammer home an unsaveable shot. 1-0, after Russell Lea had 15 shots!! Her speed and skills kept the Russell Lea defence guessing, just not often enough. We needed to get better mid-field possession!!! Control and pass! In the 2nd half, Marissa showed her experience and got some good touches, but needs to remain competitive even off the ball. Alex also played a critical role with some solid responses to the Russell Lea attack. We just n eed to convert this to retain possession and build the attack. AA/2 vs Marrickville |Won 2-0 | DATE: 17/04/10 ROUND: 2 Match Report: Injuries, Injuries, Injuries‌.. After drawing the first round with 10 men, the boys were keen to get three points on the board. And we did just that. Stellios, bagged two well deserved goals, after Courtis assisted out on the right, with some very fast footwork, and great crosses. As a team, we controlled the game, dominated midfield and our defense was as strong as it needed to be. Even though Marrickville B was a very young and fit side, they hardly threatened us.

Unfortunately, the games sour point was picking up three injuries which will hurt us in the weeks to come. Arthur’s, season has ended prematurely with a completely torn ankle ligament and broken bone. Alex, with a sprained ankle, and Tsigar a partially torn hamstring. It must be said that the condition of bennet 2 in the furthest half could be better, and needs attention. We shall struggle to make 11 again in round 3. COACH NAME: Paul Glekas

Round 3 U8/7 vs Earlwood |Won 4-0 | DATE: 24/04/10 ROUND: 3 Match Report: A great game, our third win. The first goal was am own goal from Earlwood, although the team looked like they would have scored anyway. Following on with a goal each from Yves, Simon and Firas. The taack was good, and Merino kept a good defence, usually gaining control of the ball well before it reached the goal area. .Hilldon played goalie first half and Maya for the second half. They didn't l;et one goal through, even though Maya faced some pretty stong players at one point. Leon looked like he was going to score his first goal for the season, but just missed out.. U9/8 vs Strathfield |Won 7-4 | DATE: 24/04/10 ROUND: 3 Match Report: Hi All, Another solid performance by the lads today, they were made to work hard to run out eventual winners 7 - 4. Goals from Abdelkareem R (4), Fadhilan A (2) and Sean R (1). Good performances from Alexander S, Alexandrer H, Thomas K, Charbel A, Joshua P and Georgios G along with Abdelkareem R, Fadhilan A and Sean R were enough to hold out Strathfield today. Again the boys missed several chances during todays game and hopefully they will hit the target next week.. Cheers Peter COACH NAME: Con Kakoliris

U11/5 vs Concord |Lost 1-4 | DATE: 25/04/10 ROUND: 3 Match Report: A hard match played with a few players injured or absent. However at half time we were 3-0 down and the boys were obviously feeling down. We came out in the second half fired up and put in a great performance, putting one away and conceding another. In all we proved that we could work as a team together, its only when we decided to go alone that the team fell apart. A good learning curve from this game. A spirited performance which showed we did not give up even when down, well done to all. Special mention must go to Martin for his enthusiasm in the first half and his brilliant goal keeping in the second half, the score would have been much higher without him. COACH NAME: Jim Plater

U16/1 vs Enfield |Lost 2-3 | DATE: 25/04/10 ROUND: 3 Match Report: Not a pleasing result today especially after we dominated most of the match. Leading for most of the game midway through the second half we let our guard down and were down a player after giving away a penalty and from the spot kick it bought the game level. Things started going the oppositions way and we felt ourselves back pedalling and having to scramble a lot to keep the opposition from scoring. This was also compounded from the injury toll we were receiving. But we did make it harder on ourselves by not putting away the early chances we created, the result would have been out of the oppositions reach early in the match. Although the winning goal did come from an offside position, we stood around watching and claiming the offside rather than playing to the referees whistle. We did not handle the pressure to well today something that over the years we have been able to do, and allowed the opposition back into the game. I am sure we will be able to learn from todays game and account for ourselves better next match. Thank you to all our supporters for the encouragement.. COACH NAME: John Mamatsi

U16/2 vs Balmain |Lost 1-4 | DATE: 25/04/10 ROUND: 3 Match Report: For the first time this year we started a game with 11 of our own registered players. This lasted about 25 minutes when Kevin succomed to injury. We led early in this game with Jamie scoring his first goal in his first game. However being down to 10 men we were tiring fast and Balmain kept mounting the pressure. Itwas onl a matter of time before we just didn't get players back to defend and the goals came there way. Overall the boys never stopped trying they have to learn if you go forward and lose the ball you must run back to help not walk. Thanks to the canteen helpers and field set up COACH NAME: Noel Gwynne

U16/2 Girls vs Strathfield |Lost 0-1 | DATE: 25/04/10 ROUND: 3 Match Report: Hi Girls Well done today. We played what must be the best and most experienced team in our Competition. The good news is that any team will need to get 15 shots at our goal before they are able to register 1, AND Elizabeth is becoming the most experienced goal-keeper in the comp! Our defence held firm again today, and we built more attacking chances than we did last week, but as a team we have got to work on our controlling possession skills across all positions. When we start to doubt the other girls in our team, then we will think we have to go in and help get the ball. The result as that there are less players in position to receive a pass. We also need to improve our timing and technique in defence. Too often a Strathfield attacking raid was a result of one poorly executed tackle and we get pinned in our goal region for the next few minutes and we give them several attempts at goal. Across the back, Elizabeth and Bronte kept us in the contest throughou t the game. Diana, Alex and Mariah were solid in defence and they had plenty of work to do!! They were constantly and capable assisted by Chrystalla and Shella who constantly kept the ball wide and doggedly remained in every contest. Again, Jodie, Maryanne and Bronte showed the value of fitness on the field. They cover the most ground on the field and constantly put themselves into the right position because they pushed themselves. I expect the whole team to improve their fitness. We cannot do this just on Thursday nights, BUt expect some solid training to come! Shae and Marissa showed some nice touches on the ball and great assists in getting the ball forward, but must contine to remain "alive" off the ball. Rana had a couple of excellent shots, without success and push back to assist in defence well. Nicole stayed in position and combined well to build any attack. In the last few minutes we built some real attack as Rana, Nicole, Bronte and Jodie all combined in great co ntrolled runs that linked passes. a good sign for our future! . Last to mention is Emily. Our latest import!! Just got off the plane from Europe last night. 20 hours on 2 flights and out on the field. No problems as she went into the defence and didn't miss a beat. Good ball control and a cool head under pressure. Overall, another step forward in the 14 weeks before we get to the games that really count. Our goal: Improve our fitness, our possession skills, our passing combinations each and every week! Next week - Strathfield B at Strathfield Park 3 at 10am Sunday 2/5. Must be there at 9am. Player of the Day: 3 points - Bronte - best player from either team; all over the park all day; every challenge was productive; every run was linked to the next player with a well-directed pass. 2 points - Elizabeth - great position and good commitment to the ball in the air; growing in confidence and expectations! 1 point - Jodie, Maryanne - superior fitness and ball-skills in the midfield skirmishes.

AA/2 vs Lakemba |Won 5-1 | DATE: 24/04/10 ROUND: 3 Match Report: With five players out due to injury or other commitments, it was going to be a tough match against the Lakemba boys. We started off average in the first half, with a lot of possession turn over but as the half went on we gained some momentum. Courtis opened up the scoring with great work down the right, and after carving up his man many times, he managed to put two past the keeper, both from an acute angles with ease. Moments later, Alex hits a nice half volley from outside the box that went straight into the bottom left hand corner of the goal, 3:0 at the break. After the break, against the run of play,

Lakemba score a glorious direct free kick 3:1.

But after failing to really enter our half and threaten our goal, the raptors stepped it up a wing ...... Courtis struck again and after some turning and weaving he left his defender and pinned the ball in the back of the net, and earned himself the first hatrick of the season. ‘The ref advised after th e game, that # 13, should buy a lottery ticket’. The game was played at our pace, Jose and Hugo controlled it our leisure, our defence was rock solid. After mowing every blade of grass on bennet 1 or granule of sand, however way you look at it, Themos was rewarded with a well struck volley from a Jose free kick, that left the Lakemba keeper with his mouth open. Overall, it was great performance by all, well done lads. COACH NAME: Paul Glekas
