History of Art with Hendrika Foster 'Art in Rome'

Classical Rome, its power, politics and philosophy were expressed through its architecture and art. Countless European leaders since the first century have emulated the style, and created their own ideas of the grandeur that was Ancient Rome. Roman architecture remains, in what Byron described as “ruinous perfection”, an oxymoron that perfectly encompasses the response of a Grand Tourist in the 18th century as well as a modern day visitor. From the time of the Renaissance, artists sought not only to emulate ancient masters, but to surpass them. Their legacy remains for our instruction and delight. By the end of the course you should be able to plan an itinerary for a week in Rome. We shall discuss palazzi, churches and villas that may be visited and of course these are the repositories of the best art. Course run by Hendrika Foster MA. Course Fee: £80. Jill Goatman and friends

Jill Goatman started drawing in 2002, dabbled in watercolour before progressing onto pastels, acrylic and latterly into oils. While her still life are predominantly in pastel, she likes to paint landscapes, seascapes and tree scenes that she has encountered hoping that the interpretation will recapture the “moment”. Rachel Baynes’ mostly small works in oil, acrylic and ink represent subjects from stilllife to landscape or cats in a style unified by her love of colour, simplicity and line.

Roger Clack taught himself woodcarving some 50 years ago while working as an illustrator. He specialises in representing wildlife, small stylised birds, otters and fish in a variety of exotic and native woods.

After working with pastels for many years Jane Tapping has become totally absorbed with coloured pencils. She loves experimenting with different effects, and likes her pictures to show pencil marks. Jane finds herself becoming more and more fascinated by diffused light and reflections. 14

Misbehavin'

Misbehavin’ are a quartet of versatile musicians who have appeared to great acclaim at jazz festivals, arts centres and events across the South West as well as performing on a regular basis at Pizza Express, The Pheasantry, London. Their eclectic repertoire includes original numbers, popular jazz standards and covers by artists including Tom Waits and Abbey Lincoln. Defying categorizations, they take their inspiration from a wide range of musical influences creating their own distinctive sound - rich, melodic and enthralling. Without drums, they have an unusual, intimate balance in the ensemble, the rhythm guitar and double bass providing the anchor for the vocals and clarinets to soar. The band comprises of vocalist Helen Porter, Karen Wimhurst (clarinet & bass clarinet), Robin Walter (rhythm guitar) and Ralf Dorrell (double bass). Wednesday 2 - Saturday 5 April

Two One Act Plays: 'The Dock Brief' and 'Black Comedy' 'The Dock Brief' by John Mortimer After 40 years of undistinguished practice Wilfred Morgenhall, a cynical and unsuccessful barrister, is overjoyed to be assigned a dock brief: the defence of an accused murderer. His client Herbert Fowle is a meek man who wants to plead guilty to murdering his wife. Through a series of courtroom scenes and flashbacks the lead-up to the crime unfolds, involving Fowle taking in a lodger, who takes a more-than-passing interest in Mrs. Fowle. Morgenhall, given an opportunity to shine for the first time in his life, insists on pleading his client "not guilty." But the case does not go as planned...

'Black Comedy' by Peter Shaffer Brindsley Miller, a young sculptor, and his debutante fiancée Carol Melkett have borrowed some expensive, antique furniture from his neighbour Harold's flat without his permission in order to impress an elderly millionaire art collector coming to view Brindsley's work, and Carol's father Colonel Melkett. When the power fails, Harold returns early, and Brindsley's exmistress Clea shows up unexpectedly, things slide into disaster for him. Tickets Wednesday and Thursday £10, Friday and Saturday £12.50. Cara Dillon, supported by Sam Skey “Cara Dillon is one of Ireland’s truly great singers” The Guardian

We are delighted to welcome back to Shaftesbury this world famous singer, who is one of the most highly acclaimed names in Irish folk music. She has played to packed concert venues all over the country and abroad. Cara Dillon has one of those rare talents you only come across a handful of times in your life. Her staggeringly beautiful voice reaches inside the soul of a song and imbues material with not only profound sweetness but also poignancy and depth. Born in Dungiven in 1975, she was brought up in a close musical family. Having won the All Ireland Traditional Singing Trophy at 14 she went on to sing with Oige, De Dannan and then Equation. It was in this band that she met her husband and musical collaborator Sam Lakeman. Last year they featured in the iconic BBC series "The Transatlantic Sessions”, with the cream of folk musicians from both sides of the Atlantic. Whether she's singing her native traditional songs of lost love and emigration, or their original compositions, you will be hard pressed to find a more emotive and captivating performer. Her Spring tour will showcase the songs on her new album scheduled for release this month. "A beautifully balanced production. It’s impossible not to be held spellbound... an artist this good deserves to be savored." BBC

Maddy Prior

A very welcome return to Shaftesbury by the 'First Lady of Folk-Rock'. Maddy has been in the forefront of British popular music since the 1960s. She has just completed the latest tour with Steeleye Span, as well as her customary seasonal tour with The Carnival Band. As well as these, she also finds time to run her own Arts Centre - Stones Barn in Cumbria - with concerts and residential courses. In 2001 she was awarded the MBE for services to folk music. A true legend of British music, Maddy Prior has built her career on exploring various musical avenues. Her latest album '3 For Joy' is no exception, and is a further exploration of the tradition that she loves. Once again, Maddy teams up with her colleague from the Carnival Band, Giles Lewin and the very talented accordion player (and clog-dancer extraordinaire) Hannah James, whom many of you will remember from the visit last year of the allgirl group Lady Maisery. Together they perform the music of England, The British Isles and Eastern Europe, all delivered in Maddy's own unique style. THEATRE

Thursday 29 May

Bristol Old Vic Theatre School 'Sauce for the Goose' By Georges Feydeau

Translated by Peter Meyer, directed by Christopher Scott and designed by Mick Bearwish Georges Feydeau’s high spirited romp Sauce For The Goose is stuffed with preening characters knitting their legs in sexual frustration. Its heady mix of passions, pace and pleasure are the perfect mix for a good night out. The plot is simple: Lucienne is being pursued by the married Pontagnac, who is astounded to discover that she is already married to his friend Vatelin. Lucienne has sworn to be faithful as long as her husband remains so too. But then a keen old ‘indiscretion’ of her husband’s arrives with her own husband from Germany in tow. Everyone ends up in the Hotel Ultimus, where the guests include an old army doctor and his deaf wife in Paris to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Beds are swopped, infidelities discovered and everyone’s Goose is cooked good and proper! Untrustworthy husbands, betrayed wives, artful servants and crazed Germans demonstrate why the "naughty nineties" were so named, as master French farceur Feydeau's sparkling play switches from riotous farce to barbed social satire. See the ‘Stars of Tomorrow in a Play for Today’. (Suitable 12 yrs+). Tickets £12.50, Arts Centre members £10, under 18s £6. Starts 7.30pm, Theatre.

The Move

Good bands come and go, but great bands just regenerate. This is The Move ... the first band played on Radio 1. The band sued by the Prime Minister. The band who toured with Hendrix, The Who and Pink Floyd. And the band who gave birth to ELO. It's an impressive line-up for a new generation of fans: Bev Bevan (The Move, ex ELO, Black Sabbath), Trevor Burton (The Move, Steve Gibbons, Trevor Burton Band), Tony Kelsey (Robert Plant, Steve Winwood), Phil Tree (Wizzard, Raymond Froggatt). The Move, from Birmingham was one of the leading British rock bands of the 1960s. They scored nine top 20 UK singles in five years, and became one of the best and most significant bands of their era. They often performed with the likes of Cream, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, The Kinks and The Byrds, and in 1968 toured the U.K. with Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd. This is a great opportunity to get to see one of England's truly legendary bands performing all their hits and more!! "Without doubt, it was The Beatles, The Stones and The Move in that order in England" - Tony Secunda

Crazy for You THE NEW GERSHWIN* MUSICAL

The time is the 1930s and the setting is New York City. Banking heir and show biz wannabe Bobby Child auditions for Broadway impresario Bela Zangler but fails to make the grade. His mother demands that he give up his dreams of becoming a song-anddance man and leave for Deadrock, Nevada, to foreclose on a long-empty theatre. Once in Deadrock, Bobby meets Polly Baker, the only girl in town. In true musical theatre fashion, they sing, dance and fall headover-heels in love. When Bobby recognizes that Polly’s father owns the theatre he has come to claim, he convinces her they can put on a show to raise money and save the property. Polly is enthusiastic until she realizes that he is the banker who has come to foreclose on the property. In order to try and win Polly around, Bobby impersonates Bela Zangler and brings his famous Follies to Deadrock to put on the show and save the theatre.

An exhibition of original prints by Alice Harwood, based in The New Forest, Hampshire. Winter finds the woodland stripped to its skeleton. Without leaves, branches and trunks suggest rhythm, layered, or in silhouette. The season steals colour, and the woods become muted, almost monochrome: texture becomes starker, at the dying of the year we cannot see which are dead and decaying and which are merely sleeping. Alice will be stewarding the exhibition, and will be making work in the gallery. This will be a chance for visitors to meet the artist, see Alice working and ask questions. 48

Helping the shows to go on ... SAC is a charitable company run wholly by volunteers drawn from its membership. It currently receives no public subsidy and relies on the generosity of its patrons, members and supporters. There are a number of ways you can help us financially: Making a donation You can text us at SACT11 to 70070 with the amount (£2, £5 or £10), pick up a donation form in the foyer and pass a payment to the box office, or send a cheque to the Treasurer, Shaftesbury Arts Centre. You can also donate online at ‘Support Us’. Sponsoring a seat Sponsor one of the 150 seats in the theatre and you’ll be playing an important supporting role in our fundraising efforts. For a single donation of £150 the centre will fit a stylish plaque to the seat of your choice and it will remain there for ten years with the dedication of your choice. For more details pick up a leaflet in the foyer. Leaving a legacy Leaving a gift to the SAC in your will is a wonderful way of ensuring your support for the centre will be remembered. Becoming a member See page 50 for details on how to join.
