K.A. Lesnar, President/Publisher Sioux Falls Shopping News

How Long Should Dog Spend Alone in Yard? DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My toy poodle "Scraps" loves to run around in our big backyard. He never tries to get past the fence, so I usually leave him out while I clean house or handle other tasks. A few days ago, however, as I was calling Scraps inside, my next-door neighbor told me off for leaving him out there for hours. I don't see anything wrong with him being out in our backyard. What's your take? -- Miffed in Ocala, Florida DEAR MIFFED: Your neighbor may simply have been worried for Scraps' welfare. If the weather was

Registered Limousin Yearling Bulls

hot, did you put out water for him to drink while he was outside? Could the neighbor see it? You also should consider dangers we don't think about when we're outside. Scraps is a toy poodle, so is small and light. He may not be interested in escaping under the fence, but he may look kind of tasty to a bird of prey. In some suburban neighborhoods, coyotes roam through backyards, and Scraps wouldn't stand a chance against such a predator. At the very least, make sure Scraps has a shaded area to rest in when he's outside, and has plenty of water

to drink. Check on him every 15 to 30 minutes. And bring him in after one to two hours -- don't leave him outside for long stretches, or all day. You can let him out again after a couple of hours' rest indoors, again for just an hour or two. More importantly, give him more one-on-one attention. He may love being outside, but Scraps would adore playing fetch with you or reviewing basic commands like sit, stay and lie down.

Mind-Body Workshops Help Military Heroes Heal (NAPS)—To help veterans, active-duty members of the military and their families better cope with stress and trauma, the American Red Cross created a new set of workshops teaching easy-to-use skills that promote wellness through mind-body connection. What They Do These Mind-Body Workshops focus on the powerful ways in which emotional, mental, social and spiritual factors can directly affect health.

The first workshop, Using Mind-Body Skills for Performance, helps participants explore the use of breathing, mindfulness techniques, stretching, movement and guided imagery to aid healing. The second workshop, Using Mind-Body Skills, guides participants through using mindbody techniques for personal growth and healing through drawing, journaling, meditation, mindfulness, body scan, progressive muscle relaxation and

self-directed imagery. Expert Opinions “The Red Cross Mind-Body Workshops will afford service members, veterans and their families an opportunity to learn practical relaxation techniques to improve their emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being,” said Alison M. Whitehead, MPH, RYT, PMP, VHA Office of Patient Centered Care and Cultural Transformation. The workshops are part of the organization’s well-estab-

lished resiliency program, which also includes Reconnection Workshops and Psychological First Aid courses. The extensive Red Cross presence in communities and on military installations around the world allows easy access to the new program for members of the military and veterans. “There is no magic formula for healing both the visible and invisible injuries caused by the challenges of a military lifestyle, and that’s why the Red Cross

is excited to work with the Bob Woodruff Foundation to create this complementary and integrative program,” added Koby Langley, Senior Vice President for Service to the Armed Forces at the Red Cross. “The Bob Woodruff foundation supports programs that promote a holistic approach to healing for those recovering from the hidden wounds of war,” explained Anne Marie Dougherty, the executive director.

For more information about the Mind-Body Workshops, go to redcross.org/mindbodyworkshops. The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. (NAPS)—America’s military service members make great sacrifices for our country—and for their own families— but are their kids getting what they need from our K–12 education system? A new national survey of service members, spouses and veterans looks at educational options for military families, their satisfaction and how their choices can play a role in whether a family accepts an assignment or even factor into decisions to leave military service altogether. There are roughly 750,000 school-aged children in active-duty-member households today. Data show military families are very interested in alternatives to district schools. According to a new EdChoice and Braun Research survey, we know 80 percent of them attend public schools today, despite the fact that more than 60 percent would prefer different schooling environments for their children, such as private school, charter school, virtual school or home school. In fact, once military and veteran families are informed of how school choice options work, their support for those programs increases dramatically.

SOAP UPDATES By Dana Block

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Steffy turned to her mother for comfort after Brooke lashed out at her. Bill got defensive when Justin laid it out straight to him. Later, Bill was forced to face the fallout of Wyatt’s wrath. Brooke was surprised to find Taylor on her doorstep, and the two quickly threw accusations at each other about whose daughter was at fault. Meanwhile, the newly engaged Hope and Liam were blissfully unaware of all the fighting going on around them. Bill made Wyatt an offer regarding Spencer Publications and its future. Ridge told Liam that he was being played for a fool by Bill. Katie issued Wyatt a dire warning. Bill presented his case for a future with Steffy. Wait to See: Tension builds between Ridge and Brooke. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Theresa made a deal with the devil for her freedom. JJ and Eve had an unexpected encounter. Steve secretly asked Roman for a favor. Inspired by Brady and Eve, John made a suggestion to Marlena. Abigail argued against Justin’s legal advice. Stefan and Kate faced off. Justin and Rafe had some good news for Gabi, who was still troubled by Abigail’s actions. Marlena and John made a decision about their future. Gabi inadvertently dropped a bomb on Abigail. Rafe finally decided to grant Hope her wish. Leo lured Sonny deeper into his trap. Abigail angrily confronted Stefan. Xander brings Theresa back home to Salem. Wait to See: Chloe is crushed when Mateo tells her some unsettling news. GENERAL HOSPITAL Nelle had a bizarre stroke of luck. Michael and Dante spent a night on the town. Jordan encouraged Anna not to give up. Peter looked for reassurance. Kim had some good news to share. Ava reclaimed a small piece of control. Anna and Griffin got caught up. Finn bumped into Alexis. Olivia found herself in a bind. Sonny was deeply troubled. Stella tried to look on the bright side, but was horrified. Jason asked Spinelli for help. Sam’s plans were thwarted. Dante got one over on Chase. Curtis’s nerves got the best of him. Sam stumbled on an important clue. Finn was deeply apologetic. Ava tried to entice Griffin. Josslyn connected with Oscar. Wait to See: Valentin crosses Lulu. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS In a moment of anger and frustration, Jack lashed out at his mother. Traci reminded him that Dina’s time was limited. Lily made a promise to raise Baby Sam as her own. Dina had a moment of clarity and recognized her daughter Traci. After witnessing the touching moment, Jack apologized to Dina for his temper. Hilary and Devon flirted and grew even closer after realizing that they would be celebrating Mother’s Day every year with their baby. Nick leapt into action after hearing that JT’s phone had been turned on. Abby and Arturo almost kissed after she confided in him about her messy history with men. Nick and Sharon realized that people were starting to suspect they were back together. Wait to See: Devon and Hilary reconnect with Shawna. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Lots of possibilities begin to open up by midweek. Some seem more appealing than others. But wait for more facts to emerge later on before you consider which to choose. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Bravo to the determined Bovine. While others might give up, you continue to search for answers. Expect your Taurean tenacity to begin paying off by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might want to consider stepping back from the task at hand for a while. This could help you get a better perspective on what you’ve done and what still needs to be done. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your keen Cancerian insight should help you determine whether a new offer is solid or just more fluff ‘n’ stuff. The clues are all there waiting for you to find them. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Being ignored is difficult for any proud Leo or Leona. But pushing yourself back into the spotlight might be unwise. Instead, let things work themselves out at their own pace. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Trying to uncover a colleague’s secret under the pretext of showing concern is ill-advised. Control your curiosity to avoid raising resentment in the workplace. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Expect to hear good news about a loved one. Also, be prepared for some changes in several family relationships that could develop from this lucky turn of events. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Some surprises are expected to accompany a number of changes that will continue through part of next week. At least one could involve a romantic situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be upset by some of your critics. But most of your associates continue to have faith in your ability to get the job done, and done well. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A workplace goal that suddenly seems out of reach is no problem for the sure-footed Goat, who moves steadily forward despite any obstacles placed in his or her way. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Uncertainty about who is right and who isn’t might keep you from making a clearcut decision. Wait until you know more about what you’re being asked to decide. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be careful to keep your emotions in check when dealing with a demanding personal situation. You need to set an example of strength for others to follow. BORN THIS WEEK: You have an extraordinary ability to rally people to do their best. You would be a treasure as a teacher. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Fresh rhubarb custard pie many of the girls’ experiences mirror the lifestyle and pioneer spirit of the late 1800s. For Georgia, walking on a dead-end road to the rhubarb patch in May to harvest giant leafy stalks and, together with grandmother Nancy, prepare rhubarb sauce to ladle over breakfast pancakes, and bake rhubarb custard pie for evening dessert is a delight. “Georgia is the baker and loves to cook,” says Nancy, a recently retired school administrator. “She washes and dices the stalks, cracks eggs and measures carefully. It’s fun!” she adds. “Cooking together is a way to share a common interest.” Like the first robin, the greening grass and the budding trees, add “first rhubarb pie” to your family’s “signs of spring” list. Whether you harvest rhubarb from your garden, or find stalks in your grocery produce section, give Nancy’s winning rhubarb custard pie recipe a try with your kids while rhubarb is fresh and in season.

Skipping through winding trails, spotting leaping frogs along creek beds and counting deer as they pass by the front porch are a few of the adventures in store for 6-year-old Georgia and her older sister, Eliza, when they visit their grandparents’ home nestled deep in the Wisconsin woods. What a delight for city kids from St. Louis! Like a page out of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s classic, “Little House in the Big Woods” (set in Wisconsin),

“Make it colorful!” Salad for supper blueberries to your plate of colorful vegetables. Like many vegetables, fruits contain antioxidants that can help protect against certain forms of cancer and reduce levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol. Try to limit or avoid dried fruits, such as dried cranberries or blueberries. These often have added sugars that can up the calorie content of your salad. Add a healthy crunch! A few toasted walnuts or almonds, spicy baked garbanzo beans and pickled vegetables are a great addition to any salad. Add some protein! Protein takes longer to digest, so it keeps us full longer. Protein also is needed for healthy muscles. Eggs, lean meat, beans and cheese (in limited quantities) are easy ways to add protein. Find a healthier dressing that works for you! There now are quite a variety of light dressings and vinaigrettes to choose from. Vinegar-based dressings typically have less fat and calories than creamy dressings. Oil and vinegar is a healthy choice in limited amounts -- the healthy fat from the oil helps your body to absorb some of the vitamins from the salad. Creating a healthy salad can be a simple way to satisfy recommendations for fruit and vegetable intake. It’s also a wonderful way to use leftover cooked meats, vegetables and grains. Don’t be afraid to use your grocery deli section selections for sliced vegetables and roasted deli meats to make a delicious meal in record time.

A bowl filled with a cold salad with flavorful ingredients are a “hot” menu item this year! There are several ways to incorporate the numerous varieties of spring vegetables, superfoods, grains and cheeses into a “super” salad by using simple preparation methods. Here are a few tips to make a salad that will appeal to even the pickiest eater: Make it colorful! Skip the iceberg and opt for spinach, kale or another dark leafy green. Dark leafy greens supply a tremendous amount of nutrients, including vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, iron, calcium and fiber. Add color with some carrots, red bell peppers, tomatoes, blanched asparagus, beets or any other vegetable, and you get additional nutrients critical for maintaining eyesight, bone health and digestive health. Salad isn’t just for vegetables anymore! Try adding in cooked grains such as brown rice, quinoa and barley to add nutritious texture, and fruits like apples, citrus segments, grapes, strawberries or

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH Eating leaves mouth with sour taste DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife, age 70, complains frequently of a sour taste in her mouth soon after eating. I thought she had esophageal reflux, but I did not find that sour taste is one of the symptoms. She has no heartburn, but the taste occasionally improves after taking an antacid. -- B.P. ANSWER: Gastroesophageal reflux disease can have no symptoms, or many. Sour taste is, in fact, a common symptom. This is the “reflux” of the condition’s name, since it refers to the backward movement of stomach acid -- all the way into the back of the throat or even into the mouth. Heartburn is perhaps the most common symptom, but so is difficulty swallowing. This is more common in people with longstanding symptoms. Antacids neutralize the acid in the stomach but do not prevent the reflux of stomach contents. Widely prescribed medications, including H2 blockers like Zantac or Pepcid (“H2” is a type of histamine receptor, a stimulus for acid production) and proton pump inhibitors (like Prilosec or Nexium, which directly reduce acid secretion), also act on the acid in the stomach, and do not reduce reflux. In order to reduce reflux, I recommend eating smaller meals, not reclining for two to three hours after eating,

This Week in May

Keith Roach, M.D. losing weight if appropriate and avoiding products that weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, the valve-like muscle at the bottom of the esophagus. Alcohol and tobacco are the biggest offenders. Raising the head of the bed (traditionally with a brick, but foam wedges also are good) uses gravity to help the refluxed acid get out of the esophagus. Reducing reflux or acid at night is most important. While the body is in a horizontal position, the acid can stay longer in the esophagus and cause damage. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am very concerned about my 81-year-old sister. She is 4 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 78 pounds. This is a new low weight for her. She recently had bloodwork done and was told she has an underactive thyroid and should take medication for it. She also has a colon problem and COPD.

I thought that with an underactive thyroid, you gained weight, not lost. Can you explain the difference between underactive and overactive thyroid? -- C.K. ANSWER: The thyroid gland in the neck produces thyroid hormone, which affects every tissue in the body. People with an underactive gland (called hypothyroid) tend to gain weight, may have dry skin, and slow bowel movements, and can be lethargic or sluggish. People with overactive thyroid (hyperthyroid) usually are the opposite: full of energy, thin and intolerant of heat. The diagnosis is confirmed by blood tests of thyroid levels. However, these common conditions occasionally look very different from the normal. I have seen people with severe hyperthyroidism be lethargic to the point of apathy. Weight gain or loss isn’t inevitable with thyroid disease. However, with severe COPD, weight loss is almost universal. The COPD may be a bigger contributor to her weight loss. But with a body mass index of 16.3, she is dangerously underweight and needs further evaluation and treatment. (c) 2018 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

TODAY’S FAMILY TWO MINUTES WITH THE BIBLE A Daily Devotion from the Berean Bible Society by Cornelius R. Stam The Berean Bible Society is non-denominational in character and its newspaper articles have always maintained a very high standard. We never attack other faiths but present the answer to questions that people are asking today.

The new creation In Romans 5:12 God tells us how we are all related to the first man, Adam: “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin… so death passed upon all men…” This verse clearly indicates that every child born into the world since Adam has partaken of Adam’s sinful nature. Parents sometimes wonder why their children act as they do. The answer is simple! Every child is related to rebellious Adam by physical birth, and soon rebels like Adam, whose offspring he is. In Scripture we are told that God “commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8). When you are in trouble and someone comes to your aid, are you not automatically drawn to that person? Should we not then be attracted to the One who cared so much for us that He “made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Phil. 2:7,8)? Through natural birth we partake of the sinful natures of our parents back to Adam, and frequently we even have the same physical features as our parents. How touching, then, to know that the Lord Jesus Christ took on Him “the likeness of men” (apart from sin) and, as the God-man, died for our sins upon the cross, where sinful men (people like us) nailed Him! As we recognize this and place our faith in Him, a spiritual birth takes place and we become the children of God (John 1:12). More than this, we become members of the Body of Christ, God’s new creation, for “if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation” (II Cor. 5:17). “created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained, that we should walk in them” (Eph. 2:10). © 2018 Berean Bible Society

FOCUS ON THE FAMILY Learn how to live within your means to achieve sense of peace Q: My husband and I both work fulltime. We’re having problems making ends meet, so we’re looking for better jobs. Meanwhile, we’re trying to make a little extra here and there, but it’s becoming exhausting. Do you have any suggestions? Jim: It’s a common statement: The money comes in; the money goes out. And for a lot of us, there’s not much left over when it’s all said and done. It’s a neverending cycle that leaves many families wondering how to get ahead when they’re barely making it. Many couples can only think of one solution to that problem: make more money. A little extra cash may ease some of our immediate stress, but it usually isn’t a long-term solution for debt. That’s because the more money we earn, the more we’re likely to elevate our standard of living. And more stuff means more spending. It’s no wonder that couples at all income levels, even the wealthy, often feel the squeeze of debt. Ultimately, the only solution that works is learning how to live on less than what we make -- no matter our income level. That can require some tough choices that force us to dig deep and sacrifice. On one end of the financial scale, it may mean selling a car or downsizing our home. On the smaller end, maybe we decide to eat out less or limit our entertainment choices. Living within our means may not fill our lives with material luxury. But it will give us

Dr. Edwin Lewis Stephens, president of Southwestern Louisiana Institute, founded the Live Oak Society in 1934. According to Society bylaws, the only human member permitted in the Society is honorary Chairman, who is responsible for registering and recording live oak members. The only requirement for becoming a member is that the live oak must have a girth (trunk circumference) of 8 feet or greater. ~ Brenda Weaver Source: www.wikipedia.org

Focus on the Family luxury of a different kind: contentment and peace instead of stress. We have a number of resources to help you get a handle on finances -- and lifestyle -- at FocusOnTheFamily.com. Q: Our son will be just old enough to possibly start kindergarten this coming fall. But we’re not sure if he’s ready (or we are). What should we consider before deciding? Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: Sending a child off to kindergarten can be an emotionally difficult task for some parents. Also, there can be a lot of pressure to get kids enrolled in school because of the fear that they may be missing out or falling behind. I have found that children do best when they feel a sense of worth, belonging and competence throughout their academic years. Your child’s maturity -- emotional, physical and mental -- will make a difference in developing this kind of experience.

DAVE SAYS Expenses, not income Dear Dave, I bring home $4,100 a month in military disability pay and Social Security combined. My wife brings home an additional $2,000 each month. Should we base our emergency fund level on her income only, since mine is guaranteed? Lewis Dear Lewis, Your emergency fund shouldn’t be based on income. I recommend folks have three to six months of household expenses set aside in an emergency fund. What would it take to operate your household for that length of time

Live Oak Society

with Jim

It’s helpful to consider whether you want your son to be one of the youngest or oldest in his class as he progresses through school. My kids, now 14 and 12, have done great with waiting a little longer to enter kindergarten. They have connected well and succeeded academically. In my counseling practice, I have seen more success stories in children who were on the older side in their grade than in kids who were on the younger side (when we’re talking about just old enough). However, each child is quite different. One child may flourish as the young one in the class, while another will struggle and have a lot of difficulty. My niece skipped a grade early in her elementary years and did well as the “young one” all throughout her schooling. She was a first-born, independent and driven girl and did very well academically and socially. Ultimately, it comes down to assessing whether your child is ready for school physically, cognitively and emotionally. Take some time talking with his preschool teacher, Sunday School teachers or other adults who may be interacting with him to give you some helpful input before deciding. If you’d like to talk to one of our staff counselors about this decision, you may contact them at 1-855-771-HELP (4357).

if one or both of your incomes disappeared? I don’t anticipate your income stopping,

Lewis. But income loss isn’t the only thing you’re guarding against with an emergency fund. You’re also guarding against things like an illness in the family, if the transmission in the car goes out, or your home’s heating and cooling unit needs to be replaced. There are many more crises that can come upon a family other than a loss of income. I don’t mind if you two lean toward the three-month side of expenses, since your income is pretty stable. But always remember, an emergency fund should contain three to six months of expenses, not income. Thank you for your service, sir. —Dave

is worth $12,000, and you owe $15,000. That would leave you $3,000 short. The bank holds the title, so unless you give them the payoff amount of $15,000 you’re not getting the title. The easiest and simplest way would be if someone buys the car for $12,000, and you had $3,000 on hand to make up the difference. If you don’t have the money to make up the difference, you could go to a local bank or credit union and

borrow the remaining $3,000. I really hate debt, but being $3,000 in the hole is a lot better than being $15,000 in the hole. Then, you could turn around and quickly pay back the $3,000 you borrowed. You’d give the total amount owed to the bank, they would give you the title, and you would sign it over to the new owner. Hope this helps! —Dave

Getting rid of the car Dear Dave, How do you sell a vehicle with a lien amount that’s higher than the actual value of the car? Michael Dear Michael, First, you need to find a way to cover the difference between the amount of the lien and what you can get for the car. Let’s say the car

You’ll Love Your Composite Deck (Menards) When it comes to building a new deck, fence or dock, now more than ever, today’s busy consumers want something that’s low maintenance, high value and will last a long time. COMPOSITE DECKING • This extremely durable material will stand the test of time, resisting splintering, splitting, cracking, warping, rotting and insect infestation while providing the look of real wood. • Is made from recycled wood fiber and plastic poly-

mer composition that may have otherwise ended up in a landfill. • Easy to clean with mild detergents and water using a garden hose or pressure washer. • Typically comes in a variety of colors including cedar, gray, redwood and rosewood tones. • This low-maintenance material never needs to be stained or treated, further reducing the cost to the consumer and toll on the environment. • Quick and easy to install

just like a traditional wood deck with standard woodworking tools. • Offers high slip resistance and anti-splinter technology for you and your family. • Composite decking can be used to build fences, railings, benches, steps, caps, picnic tables and other outdoor solutions. Supplying high quality and sustainable living solutions is just part of helping our planet. Article Courtesy of Menards

Protect Your Driveway From the Elements (Menards) Concrete and asphalt have long been used for residential and commercial driveways. Some basic preventative maintenance will ensure that your driveway lasts a long time, ultimately saving you money. SEALCOATING YOUR ASPHALT DRIVEWAY • Think of sealcoating your driveway just like you paint a fence or siding to keep the weather from deteriorating the wood. • Sealcoating seals the small cracks that can turn into large cracks, patches and rough spots. • When newly applied, makes the surface look nearly brand new. • Helps protect the drive-

way from the sun and harmful effects of chemical spills such as oil and gasoline. • Acts as a waterproofing agent, preventing damage from freeze/thaw cycles which can cause cracks. • Leaves a smooth, clean surface ideal for sweeping which lowers cleaning costs • All of these benefits apply to asphalt surfaces including sidewalks, paths, trails, sport courts and more. SEALING YOUR CONCRETE DRIVEWAY • Concrete has long been used for house foundations, driveways, porches, patios, sidewalks, retaining walls, sport courts and more. • Moisture, water, mold, mildew and freeze/thaw dam-

age are all very detrimental to a concrete surface, therefore these surfaces need to be cleaned and sealed every few years to repel moisture. • Clean with a pressure washer and quality concrete cleaner. Remove contaminants such as mold, mildew, grime, dirt and stains prior to sealing your concrete. • Allow the surface to air dry for several days prior to sealer application. • Use a large brush, paint roller or sprayer to apply a consistent application of the sealer. It is always important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when applying sealers to your surfaces. Article Courtesy of Menards
