ESSENTIAL NATURE OF CLASSIFICATION Under the general direction of the Technical Services Supervisor, the Construction Inspector classification is responsible for performing a variety of construction inspection duties relative to projects undertaken within Technical Services; and to provide and maintain documentation of activities. The Construction Inspector classification is a position under the jurisdiction of United Public Employees Local 790 which exercises no super vision.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Following are representative examples of the essential duties associated with the Construction Inspector classification. The incumbent in the classification may be required to perform other related duties, as assigned by the Director of Housing Development. Perform field inspections of construction sites during various stages of construction to assure contract compliance; ascertain conformance to applicable codes, laws and ordinances. Advise appropriate Department personnel regarding violations of codes, rules or regulations. Review change orders related to contract work on assigned buildings; review shop drawings and ensure proper incorporation into contracts. Explain and interpret requirements and restrictions to the contractors as needed. Provide staff assistance to management staff on special projects or assignments a necessary. Maintain records and lists related to area of assignment; prepare progress and periodic reports. Attend progress meetings related to major contracts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS KNOWLEDGE Accepted safety standards and methods of building construction. Principles and techniques of building inspection work. Applicable State, Federal and local rules, laws and regulations related to contract compliance. Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (CONTINUED) ABILITY TO Apply technical knowledge and follow proper inspection techniques. Enforce pertinent laws, rules and regulations with tact and firmness. Work independently without supervision. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. EXPERIENCE, TRAINING GUIDELINES AND LICENSURE - Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be: EXPERIENCE Two years of experience in the building construction field as a journey level carpenter, plumber, electrician or related craftsperson. One year of building or construction inspection experience is desirable. TRAINING Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driverâ€™s license.
