SFCC offers many ways to fill your children’s summer days with play, learning and exploration. Our selection of courses this summer includes swimming, cooking, ropes challenges, orienteering, theater, art and writing. This summer is stuffed with fun, hands-on educational activities. The preschool swim program is a two-level water adjustment and pre-swim program that helps develop skills in children 3 to 5 years old. The child must be ready to enter a group swimming program on his or her own. SFCC has assembled a dynamic team of instructors for this program.

Geocaching and High Ropes Adventure Camp (Ages 13 to 15)

Have a blast doing scavenger hunts, orienteering and geocaching on SFCC’s campus. With orienteering, you will learn how to read a map, take a bearing on a compass and find waypoints. Learn to use a Global Positioning System (GPS) and find caches hidden around the campus. Experience the thrill of high events on the ropes challenge course, the largest challenge course in the Southwest. Increase your courage by doing the most popular high events: zip line, dual shaky pole, climbing tower and more. Geocaching and Scavenger Hunt Adventure Camp (Ages 10 to 12)

Have a blast doing scavenger hunts, orienteering and geocaching on SFCC’s campus. Learn to read a map, take a bearing on a compass and find waypoints in orienteering. Have fun finding clues and hidden treasures in a scavenger hunt, learning more about your campmates in a human treasure hunt and playing cooperative games like blob tag, link tag, pro ball and more. Ropes Challenge Course Adventure Camp (Ages 10 to 12)

Experience the thrill of SFCC’s Ropes Challenge Course. Our 20 acre challenge course is the largest in the Southwest. Increase your courage and strengthen your leadership skills by participating in adventure games, low events, and all nine high events: zip line, vertical playpen, single shaky pole, dual shaky pole, high wire Y, dangle duo, climbing tower, high wild woosie and the swing by choice, which can take you up to 55 feet off the ground. Participants wear a full-body harness and a helmet. All events are “challenge by choice.” Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 9, 5 days. Guitar Intensive Workshop (Ages 8 to 13)

Learn to play the guitar! Discover basic music and guitar theory, and learn a variety of songs. Bring your own guitar. Andrew Lovato has been teaching guitar to Santa Fe youth for many years. Baking and Desserts (Ages 11 to 14)

Learn to cook all your favorite sweets from scratch – yummy cookies, quick breads, pies and perfect cakes. Cooking Fundamentals Camp (Ages 11 to 14)

Cooking is an important skill if you want to be independent. Make a variety of recipes each day with the chefs from SFCC’s Culinary Arts program. Learning the fundamentals of food preparation with a focus on fun and safety. The best part is that you’ll get to eat what you make! Teens in the Kitchen (Ages 14 to 17)

Learning to cook is an essential life skill. Join the chefs from SFCC’s culinary arts program and learn about kitchen and food safety, while making a variety of recipes. Fashion Design Camp (Ages 12 to 16)

Move over “Project Runway.” One out of five teens wants to be a fashion designer, but how do they get started? This class is a good way to learn about the fashion industry, learn to sketch clothing designs and sew a simple garment. Ezra Estes teaches fashion design at SFCC and has twice been a semi-finalist for “Project Runway” tryouts. He has also worked with recent “Runway”contestant Patricia Michaels on some of her designs. Theater Workshop (Ages 8 to 10)

Explore storytelling and acting using the group to form the plot and script. Theater provides fun ways to express your imagination. Acting encourages teamwork and creativity while allowing you to see other people and the world in a new way. Storytelling immerses you in the worlds you create. Teen Theater (Ages 13 to 17)

Tell stories, improvise and create a brief theater piece that everyone will present during the final class. Parents and friends are invited to watch the performance on the last day of class. Students create the set, costumes and the script, all of which are as simple or complex as the story requires. Acting experience is not necessary. Funny Pictures, Cartooning for Kids (Ages 9 to 16)

Calling all kids! A unique opportunity for young artists to learn cartooning techinques from Eric Teitelbaum, co-creator of the Pink Panther Comic Strip. This three-day camp will cover basic shapes and expression, designing original characters, humor writing and more. Fine Arts for Kids (Ages 9 to 16)

Anyone might be a young Picasso! This workshop introduces young artists to the world of fine arts and visual techniques for creating realistic drawings. Students learn to use a variety of media and techniques, including pencil, pen and ink, watercolor, charcoal, the psychology of color and more. This workshop provides students with a unique opportunity to develop artistic skills under the guidance of an internationally acclaimed designer, Eric Teitelbaum. Teen Writing Jam (Ages 12 to 15)

Four days, several teens and a whole lot of creativity. Develop and improve your creative writing skills. Gain inspiration for new ideas, plot twists and feedback on what works and what doesn’t. Challenge yourself with writing exercises and craft games to push those boundaries in different writing styles. Any teen with an interest in writing is welcome to this workshop. Alexandra Diaz has a Master of Arts in writing for young people from Bath Spa University in the U.K. She has published a book, Of All the Stupid Things and is working on her second. Create 2D Games from Scratch (Ages 9 to 13)

Students with no programming experience can create exciting games, stories and powerful simulations after only a few hours of exposure to MIT’s Scratch. Abstract computer science concepts such as object orientation, rule-based programming and programming by example are embedded in an easy-to-learn, graphics environment. Alice Game Programming (Ages 9 to 13)

Meet Alice, an interactive 3D-programming environment from Carnegie Mellon University. Alice offers the best first exposure to programming for students by providing an intuitive 3D environment for teaching object-oriented programming. Learn to develop and create animations and games using programming basic algorithm design and storyboarding. Only a basic familiarity with computers is needed. Introduction to Python and Turtle Graphics (Ages 13 to 17)

An excellent introduction to the Python for teens, this class covers programming concepts including variables, data types, iteration and flow of control. Students use turtle graphics to illustrate and explore these programming concepts.
