As we say every year, this year really was one for the books. We had numerous events, employee engagement opportunities, volunteers, donation drives and fun things to be proud of around The Farm. We truly work for one of the best companies around, and it’s a joy to be able to see employees come together with each event and program all combined in the pages of The Insider.

While flipping through the pages of this edition, I hope you can see a sense of community with our employees. We hear the term “Farm Family” often, but it rings true throughout these pages, in the halls and even outside the building. Our coworkers are our family, and it’s unique to be able to come to such a special place daily.

A few notable accomplishments for our “Farm Family” throughout the past several months was reaching 150 Billion of Life Insurance In-Force, numerous professional designations and accomplishments and last but certainly not least, raising another $6,500 to grant a Make-A-Wish child’s wish. Our employees are generous, dedicated and have a service-minded heart. Our employees came together throughout 2018 to support our Farm Hands program, CARES Workplace Giving Campaign by pledging over $133,000 to disperse into our community, supporting school supply drives and hurricane relief efforts. These efforts to help your fellow neighbor, Farm Bureau Family and community partners are appreciated year round. Thank you for always being willing to help better our surrounding communities.

You, our employees, are the heartbeat of this organization.

That’s what makes this place what it is. Thank you for all that you do day in and day out to make these pages come to life and to make this company what it is. Your tenure, service, knowledge and dedication don’t go without notice.

This years’ company picnic was on Friday, June 8th. We rounded out Make-A-Wish May by celebrating our Wish kid, Henry, with a Hawaiian themed lunch. In total, our employees raised $6500 to send Henry to Hawaii! The menu consisted of hamburgers and hotdogs, Hawaiian grilled chicken, tropical fruit salad, Hawaiian style rice, pineapple upside-down cake and more! There were also 12 winners of the door prize drawings that won gift cards, a grill basket, a Destin vacation and more. This years’ Company Picnic was a great way to honor Henry’s wish and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Service Awards Dinner

On August 30th, the 2018 Annual Service Awards at the Country Club of Jackson started out unlike any other.

After the invocation by Emily Hardy, Matt Ginn began to introduce the entertainment. Much to his surprise, Kevin Green and Stacey Williams interrupted him and brought their own entertainment – the Jerry Smith ensemble, a gospel choir. Oh Happy Day started the show, and two more songs followed to get the evening off to a great start. As the choir exited, the awards ceremony started. This year, we were able to honor 89 employees, with service

years ranging from five to forty years, for their service to Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company.

We also honored 22 employees who earned special designations, ranging from FLMI, FLHC, FALU, ASA and CLU, over the course of the past year.

However, the celebration was not over yet. Southern Farm Bureau Life’s own David Simmonds was introduced next to the stage. Clad in a black tailcoat, bowtie and complimenting maroon pocket square, David was this years’

“Let’s Make A Deal” game show host. Over the course of 6 games, honored employees played games and answered questions for the chance to make a deal with David. Contestants walked away with a variety of prizes such as a TV, a JBL Waterproof Speaker, a two-night stay at the Alluvian Hotel, but some contestants ended up with “Zonk” prizes like a café lunch card and a brand new bottle of Poo-Pourie! The employee service celebration ended with the ensemble lining the hall to the front doors of the Country Club.

n August 15th a team from marketing, led by David Hurt, Senior Vice President of Marketing, visited Farm Bureau Insurance of Grenada County to congratulate Robert Carollo, FSCP of Mississippi Farm Bureau Insurance for helping us achieve our Company goal of $150 Billion of Life Insurance In-Force. Carollo E-Delivered (in pilot testing by Sales Leadership agents, coming soon to everyone) a $500,000 30 Year Premier Term policy on a client on July 25th to complete our Company initiative.

During the August celebration, there was camaraderie and fellowship. Bengie Goff, LUTCF, CLF, Vice President of Agency, Bengie Goff, Robert Carollo (Agent), Al Cummins (Agency Manager), David Hurt, Barry Lance Davis, CLU, LUTCF, FSS, Patton (MS DSM), Henry Hamill (MS-State Sales Manager), Lance Davis.

Director of Agency, Henry Hamill, LUTCF, Mississippi State Sales Manager, and Al Cummins, FSCP, Grenada County Agency Manager also spoke to the group during a presentation.

“When I came here…I wanted to succeed, and the surrounding people we have here have really built that for me. We are more of a family than a work [place], and that’s what you have to have. We have that kind of relationship that you don’t find everywhere,” shared Carollo.

The home office team presented Carollo and the rest of the office with gifts congratulating them on a job well done. Carollo insisted everyone receive something because he said it was such a team effort. “I love what I do here, and I love the people that I am around. It means the world to me what y’all have done [to help me].”

BA program RACHEL GEIMER & Mallory Carcich What is the business analyst program?

A community of employees tasked to help engage the company in creating efficient business processes in an effort to meet our corporate goals, specifically engage our employees, increase customer experience and minimize expenses.

What is a business analyst?

A business analyst works as a liaison between the business users of a process and the technical team (internal or external). They learn the pain points and needs of the business areas and develop requirements for the IT team to use. In our program, we are learning different Business Analyst techniques that are beneficial to the projects and processes in our Company.

What type of projects have the business analysts worked on over the past year?

Company Forms, Purchase & Inventory, Accelerated Underwriting, E-Delivery, Policy Change E-App, LifeSales, and Guards. In addition, our Business Analysts have been assigned to the following Efficiency Assessments:

What are a few highlights of projects that BA’s have worked on this year?

Our BA’s have worked on several projects and Efficiency Assessments this year. Here is some feedback we’ve gotten: “We have done things a certain way for so long and with minimum mistakes that we take for granted that the current process/procedure is the most efficient way. The efficiency assessment team puts a fresh pair of eyes and a different mindset on our current mailing processes.

They come in, to shadow the incumbent, with minimum disruption to our schedule and workday. After a thorough assessment of one of the jobs in our department, they have given a welldocumented recommendation for improvements.”

– Anthony Clay “The Company Forms project has utilized multiple Business Analysts.

These individuals have completed a significant amount of research that was necessary for the progression of the project.

They have performed a thorough inventory to identify right at 870 company forms, which are owned by and/or updated by various individuals and departments throughout the company. This information is vital to the project team as they prepare to make decisions about how to move forward.” – Brad McKee

How has the BA program led to growth in your career?

Rachel - The BA program has exposed me to new skills and techniques, and a whole network of amazing people that I may not otherwise have worked with. In addition, I have been given the opportunity to head a new department Special Projects department in the Policy Services area.

Mallory - The BA program has provided me with valuable training, both technical and interpersonal that have made me a better employee. I’ve been pushed out of my comfort zone and gained confidence in my skills. I’ve also benefitted from great networking opportunities that I would not have had otherwise.

ur first Community Hero Award was given to DOUG LAMM in Corporate Actuarial for the 2nd quarter of 2018. Doug has been involved with Special Olympics of Mississippi for about four years, and in July he was able to spend a full week in Seattle as the gold coach for the USA games. At these games, there were over 3,000 Special Olympics Athletes from across the United States, including 27 athletes from Mississippi. Doug coached all three golf athletes to medaling in their competitions. Two of these athletes received a gold medal, and one won a bronze medal. If not for community heroes like Doug, these organizations would not be able to accomplish such achievements.

Our third quarter Community Hero Award was presented to LEA ANN CRAIG. After awarding our first quarter award, we received nominations for the third quarter, and Lea Ann’s nomination really stood out. Kacey Barrett submitted the following to nominate Lea Ann. “Lea Ann has dedicated volunteer services to CARA for over 15 years.

She serves on the board for the organization and volunteers her time every weekend and several times during the week. She is involved in the adopting process and fosters several animals for CARA. She helps train people new to the program and helps SFBLI every year during the workplace giving day at CARA. Many people in our office consult with Lea Ann when they are looking to adopt an animal or need to put an animal up for adoption. Lea Ann’s love for animals shows through her passion for dedicating her time with CARA.”

BOTH OF THESE STORIES ENCOMPASS EVERYTHING WE HOPED THIS AWARD WOULD HIGHLIGHT. THANK YOU TO DOUG LAMM AND LEA ANN CRAIG FOR BEING PILLARS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES AND FOR DEDICATING THEIR TIME AND PASSIONS TO THESE ORGANIZATIONS! OUR COMMUNITIES ARE BETTER PLACES BECAUSE OF THESE TWO SFBLI EMPLOYEES.

I am very appreciative that the Company afforded me the opportunity to attend this year’s LOMA Annual Conference & Conferment in Vancouver. The program featured outstanding keynote speakers that spoke on specific topics such as leadership skills, time management, and industry trends. – Bennett Wilson Overall, the LOMA conference was extremely beneficial to my personal development and knowledge of the insurance industry. I was inspired to look at my own life and see what limitations are simply self-limiting beliefs and to change my perspective on them. I also learned a great deal from the industry discussion on technology. I have a much broader view of the growth and changes in the life insurance industry. I am very grateful for the opportunity to attend the conference and will encourage other Southern Farm Bureau employees to earn their FLMI designation. Thank you for allowing me to attend the event. WATERMELON c i s s a Cl THE FARM BUREAU

T

h is years’ Farm Bureau Watermelon Classic, in partnership with the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame was held on a hot and sunny July 4th.

We had over 70 SFBLI employees and their family members participate in the 5K run and walk. Of the employees that ran the 5K, David Simmonds in General Accounting expressed the agony of defeat by a co-worker, Thomas Hesselbein in Field Compensation, who crossed the finish line before him.

“It was a tough race. I got beat by someone younger, less experienced – I’m just ashamed. Thomas Hesselbein, man, he’s amazing. And for everybody out there, Thomas is looking for a job right now,” David joked.

David Slowik in Claims was the first Farm Bureau employee to cross the finish line this year. He said, “I love doing the race because there is nothing better than running with your Farm Family.”

We also had over 30 volunteers that helped cut watermelon, pass out water and more.

On volunteering at the Watermelon Classic, Crystal Apostle in Underwriting said, “I love the Watermelon Classic. It is a great event for everybody to come out, volunteer and spend their time hanging out with their company friends and neighborhood friends. I love the sense of community that this offers us as a group.”

A

s 2018 is inching towards a close, I am sure everyone has heard the word engagement at least once, and hopefully a lot more. An engaged employee is defined as “one who is fully absorbed by and enthusiastic about their work and so takes positive action to further the organization’s reputation and interests.”

The strategic vision committee has

implemented an engagement strategy to reach a score of 65% of engaged employees by 2022. The five-year strategic vision included creating the awareness portion of engagement, then the idea to move towards improving and cultivating employee engagement as a company and lastly making the culture of engagement at The Farm operational.

A lot of planning went into promoting employee engagement in 2018, and you will continue to see this trend into 2019. We hope you enjoy looking back on the many ways our employees were engaged in 2018; from teambuilding, the Strategic Vision Expo, Farm Hands Days, Company Sponsored Events and much more.

Just a note to tell you what a delight Cenith Washington was to work with today! I appreciate that her smile comes through the phone when speaking with her. Her laughter is contagious and I appreciate her going over and beyond her call of duty to help me with a policy delivery receipt issue today. I have had a difficult week and Cenith helped make it a much better one today! If you hard giggles from her cubicle, then that was my fault.
