Two Colorado rug by playe rs feat ure d prominent ly in the ir respe ctive side ’s ascendancy and ultimate championship victory at the Las Vegas I nternational 7s t ournam ents on t he weeke nd: one with a remarkable defens ive act ion t o prese rve the tit le -w in, a nd t’othe r whose second stanza t ry provide d the Seth and friends measure for a happy Ame rican result at day’s end. The thread conne cting both p layers? Each learned (a nd are yet learning in one case ) their basic skills at C olorado Springs G riz zlies high school rugby prog ram. Grizzlies program was beg un by t he late Tab Hicks , shaped and refine d by the form idable rugby mind of J ohn Pate rson . It continues today unde r the consummate guidance of hea d coach, Ot is McGreg or. The Springs high school club has won six , Colorado State Championships in the eight years they ’ve been in compet it ion. Grizzlies are curre ntly on a run of three state t itles in a row and have place d in the top ten high s chool clubsides nat ionwide in the past two years. Logan Co llins (curre nt De nver Barbarians 15s captain and blindside flanker) was instrumental in earning his previously unhe ralded (but not anymore!), blue -collar Barbarians squad second on t he Ame rica ’s 7s clubs ide table last August. Captain Col lins will lead his 15s s ide on t he pitch this Saturday, Fe bruary 1 s t , as opening day of t he Inaugural Pacific Rugby P remie rship season explodes. … while Seth Halliman (current high school Grizzlies 15s captain) has a season left of hig h school play. Ha lliman’s 15s rugby pote ntial has already been recognized by USA Rugby selectors. The y oung man spent a portion of last summe r t raveling and play ing w it h U -20 Eagles on tour to Argent ina. Seth sets the 7s pack as prop, but t he young man can compete ntly cove r anywhe re from #s 6-thru-15 in the greate r code… Colora do Springs Grizzlies head coach Otis McGre gor was in Vegas w ith a contingent of Big Bear coaches and playe rs, chee ring Halliman’s play. McGregor on Halliman: “Seth excelle d on defe nse in pool play and did a great job attacking the gap and finishing. His GPS, and aware ness of be ing where the ball was g oing to be , enable him to be highly effect ive on defe nse. He was t he e ffe ctive jackal in every t ackle and (conseque ntly) drew penalties for his team. In the championship match, Seth w as solid in all phases of t he game and he lpe d t o lead his team t o t he championship. ” McGregor cont inued: “It was a great opportunity for me t o watch one of t he Grizz lies play at such a hig h level and succeed. The Griz zlies w ork hard every day on the fundame ntals of the game a nd Seth demonstrated t hose skills in every match during t he LVI.”

Denver Ba rbarian, Maximo de Achaval , and American Inte rnat ional College’s Kurt Werner have bee n recognize d for t heir rug by skills and included in the latest USA select ion pools: de Achaval in t he me n’s group and We rne r in the U20s. Werner starred at scrumhalf for Littleton Eagles in t he Colorado high school rugby league, while de Achaval wa s a dete rminant on his University of Colorado Buffalos RFC , le ading them to a USA C ollegiate Best Four finish in 2008. The Argent inean native has w orn well numbe rs 9-t hru-15 for Denver Barbarians and his goal -k ick ing precision has bee n the deciding factor ofte n in Barbarians v ictories since he joined t he club in 2008 afte r graduat ing CU-Boulde r. Rugby NightLife: Harmonic Convergence on Broadway at Brendan’s Pub There’s a new music room in town. Brendan’s Pub at 404 Broadway held its inaugural, once-a-month (for now), Wednesday evening sessions last night with a kickoff show of the finest from local sound stylist and Samples leadsman, Sean Kelly. Kelly headlined the opening, Wednesday show at the cozy, 80-seat tuneroom just south of downtown Denver along Broadway. If silk could rasp, Kelly made that sound in a first set sprinkled with songs from new Samples output: America. It was Samples signature, Did ya ever look so nice?, that kicked things into lively gear and featured Kelly’s masterful vocals, lending loft to lilt, yet sloping surely into swift stabs of poignant sound that sent a finely-pulsing electric current thrumming throughout Brendan’s remarkable acoustics. Did ya… anchored the initial set, evoking happy memories, and the title song from the new release, America, blends 20th century Samples form in a vital and vibrant 21st century manner, which bodes well for both new and gently-used Samples followers. Kelly was accompanied by Samples sawman, Will James, whom some say traces his lineage back to the outlaw, Jesse – one thing sure about James, he’ll steal your heart with a smoothness unnoticed until its effect has enveloped.

If you had the great good fortune to have played men’s rugby in Colorado during the smart part of the 20th century, you probably had occasion to have been run over, run around, or perhaps just had your ball snatched skillfully by a Man in Green (though no leprechaun, he) called Kevin Garrity.

These days, Barbarians Old Boy Garrity owns and operates Brendan’s Pub at 404 Broadway; Its estimable showroom opened Wednesday last to a packed house and an absolutely awesome show by Samples frontman, Sean Kelly.

Kelly is not one of those singers whose voice needs instrumental backup. Brendan’s kitchen rocks, too! No, a pure audible shot of Kelly transcends the room and transports one to a place where simple things loom and fundamental aspects of life clarify themselves unbidden. Of an earlier day it would be easy to imagine Kelly a minstrel/troubadour, roaming where the wind will, spreading his musical message over the land, a soulful shanachie. It has been a long time since the beauty and poignancy of a musical piece brought tears to the orbitals, yet last evening’s show did so joyfully. Kelly’s second stanza outpaced his opening hour as he worked Neil Young’s Cowgirl in the Sand into which was dropped a bit of Pete Townshend’s Eminence Front so slickly you weren’t even sure that it had occurred. Young’s Blown Away featured as part of a sizable encore that, though comprehensive and lengthy, had customers at the end of the show rolling up to Brendan’s barkeeps and ordering, “Sean Kelly, with a Will James back,” one and all. … and if you’re thinking – “I’ll never be able to attend as Wednesday night is a school night” – Don’t be a babee! You’re to know that doors pop at 6:30 with the opening act (last night was Gary Fielder) onstage by 7 and done by; regards the headliner, after two sets and a substantial encore, this enthusiast was yet home by 10:30-ish in accordance with the morrow’s soon come. They’ve called it – Six Nations

Wales

v

Italy

Saturday, 2.1.14 @ Millennium Stadium, 7:30am MST Opening match of the tournament pits defending champion Wales against upset-minded Italy in Cardiff. Master Nutritionist, Vail RFC (add ink) player and provider Bart Cuomo is certain the Azzurri will triumph on the day and not just because of head coach Jacques Brunel’s power-packed lineup featuring the likes of Martin Castrogiovanni and Sergio Parisse: “It’s their training diet,” reports Cuomo, “high-carbs covered in marinara or a light, white sauce are the winning ticket. My guys’ll be fully energized the entire atey *sic+ minutes, feasting on Welsh Rarebit.” Evidently Italy are preparing a French Surprise (as they did in 2013’s first-fixture v Les Bleus) for their hosts: Wales 28, Italy 33 Wales native, Colorado builder and rugby sage, Geraint Beynon, feels menu items immaterial to the outcome: “They’ll eat crow, is what’s for their dinner,” states the wily Welshman with a genial grouse. “Our pack is solid, though center injuries could present a depth problem, but (head coach) Warren (Gatland) will sort with (Rhys) Priestland and (Dan) Biggar smoothing any three-quartersline blips.” A sublime sensory supper for all in Wales this day: Wales 35, Italy 10

France v England Saturday, 2.1.14 @ Stade de France, 11am MST At day’s end, the calamitous 14th century will have had nothing on this conflict between IRB-ranked heavies Les Bleus (#5) and the Men of the Rose (#4). Here’s sage forecast from Coloradoans: If one listens to the English press, it may appear that England will cross the Channel and clobber France with tallies of: France 15, England 22 While our own Hugo Richard, from the French alpine village of Sioux Falls predicts: “A breakout match for Doussain and Plisson at halfbacks, and Picamoles will be fearsome in the hard charges. Les Bleus are back!” France 25, England 23

Ireland v Scotland Sunday, 2.2.14 @ Lansdowne Road, 8am MST In the Battle of the Blue Celts versus the Green Celts, in what most likely will be Ireland warrior Brian O’Driscoll’s last Six Nations campaign v the Caledonian and the advent of Scotland scintillator, Stuart Hogg’s lengthy (one should hope) career, the home side will triumph unless the travelers exhibit faultlessly on the day – gonna be scary good! – Ireland 27, Scotland 27
