NESTLED amongst the sights and architectural masterpieces of the historic Chelsea District of Lower Manhattan, Stacked-NYC is a fitting jewel along the High Line Park.

Designed to be a co-working mid-rise office building, the scheme is one of creating personal connection between community members, enhancing natural light & green space, and revitalizing the traditional office model.

RESTING along the banks of the Congaree River, dividing the cities of Columbia and West Columbia, the Congaree Connector establishes a lost connection between two urban sisters. Allowing communities to come together, the Connector boasts a new home for the ONE Columbia organization, a venue to host art exhibits, theatrical and musical productions, as well as rehearsal and studio facilities for members and guests.

INTRODUCTION The Charleston Medical District serves a vital role on a regional, state, and national scale.

The CMD is the largest regional employer drawing over 14,000 employees from the Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley Counties in South Carolina. The CMD also leads the state in quaternary healthcare and medical education as host to the Medical University of South Carolina. Finally, the CMD is also one of the largest contributors to health research nationally and a key partner in commercializing medical innovation.

The CMD Revitalization Project centers around the challenges identified through the design team’s that threaten the viability and continued functionality of the District. Our design approach considers these challenges and addresses them through complex solutions on the macro and micro scales.

CHALLENGE AREAS

HEALING Leading research in healthcare design places a strong emphasis on the inclusion of greenspace as a promoting factor of healing and comfort for both patients, their families, and visitors. The District as a whole does not promote this new conclusion as well as it could. It has limited, outdated greenspace and lacks a comforting aesthetic.

SECURITY The City of Charleston faces the increasing threat of flooding from rain storms, predictable tidal changes, and catastrophic weather events. The City’s aging infrastructure has proved insufficient and water often finds its way into major arterial roadways that threatens the vital services of the District and surrounding area.

CONNECTION The District is bordered by small scale yet dense residential neighborhoods. Collectively, the District’s grid pattern and its surroundings do not match in scale or rhythm, making it much harder to navigate for new patients and visitors. Furthermore, the function of the District is very narrow and lacks public draw for any use other than healthcare. These two together create a larger dissonance between the District and the City of Charleston itself.

H E A LT H As a design team, we decided the best approach to promoting health and an atmosphere of healing would be to improve and update existing greenspace within the District as well as provide new opportunities for greenspace as well. To better organize this decision, each new or updated greenspace is arranged in a hierarchy of space classified on size and location or “node”. Each node is placed at important intersections of important pedestrian crossroad and at entrances to major facilities. The largest nodes are classified as “A” nodes, these are mostly new developments. Secondly are “B” nodes which occur at preexisting intersections and entrances of major structures such as hospitals, MUSC campus buildings, and parking garages. Lastly are “C” nodes which are supplemental entrances to the elevated pedestrian way explained in the next section.

SECURITY Combating the threats of flooding against the security of the District, elevated pathways will extend to all major buildings, parking garages, and new major developments to the north and south of the District. Ensuring that employees, patients, and visitors can use the District when roadways of the campus are flooded and unusable. The elevated pathways can also be restricted during emergency situations to allow ambulances and service vehicles vital access to each critical function facility. During non-emergency situations, fully autonomous transit vehicles can take patients to their appointments, lessening the struggle of navigating the confusing roadways and buildings of the District.

CONNECTION The District, even though embedded within the fabric of the City, does not follow the prime characteristics of the City. Primarily exhibited through the scale of the buildings, the irregular grid pattern, and lack of varied use, the design team suggests adding commercial development opportunity to the north and south of the District. One opportunity occurs in the median between the Septima Clark Highway, a major arterial roadway that supplies a direct route from one side of the city to the other. The second being vacant property along Long Lake, an unused amenity that could become a valuable water feature to the District. In terms of scale, each development is designed to “balance� the District with retail, hotel, and local community inclusion as well as through building scale to provide a more gradual ascent to building height from the relatively lower height of the surrounding City.

IPS The Inventory Processing System (IPS) is a rapid inventory prosessing and production line system designed to expedite the production of bin pallets for a local wholesaler client. The IPS is designed modularly so that as the client’s production rate grows, the system can adapt to the demand. The system design is also adaptable with “upgradable” features to fit any budget over time.

CONVEYOR SORTING Primary and secondary conveyors work simultaneously; primary brings inventory to be sorted, secondary carries rejected items to a receptacle for pick up.

REFUSE DISPOSAL Each station has a disposal chute that spans the width of the station for quick and easy sorting with minimal movement.

WOOD WORKING During my time in Charleston, I was fortunate to participate in an Introducion to Craft course that taught and encouraged the art of wood working. In this course, patience and attention to detail were crutial to the sucess of the project which often resulted in percise planning and knowledge of the behavior of tools used in production.

The resulting product of this course was a small countertop tea set storage container made from walnut sapwood and poplar.

THE NOTECARD as a field allows for conceptual visualization of some of the Principles of Design such as Movement and Negative Space. Through Movement, a figure is translated across the field in accordance with a grid.

The resulting translation through iteration creates a flow the eye can follow.

Each translation then affects the negative space around it influencing the idea of “occupiable” versus “occupied” space.

THE ELLIPSE features the changing of space through repeating of motion. In this exercise, exhibition of attention to minute changes in position exaggerate the effects on space.

SUBTRACTION from a larger mass or a boolean operation is the process of removing material from a large mass to create space. The primary goals of this exercise was to create opportunity for light to penetrate space and to frame moments of architectural interest.

MASSING Site perimeter is extruded into a single mass to be subtracted from.

PAT H S Paths are cut into the mass to ensure access to all levels of space.

MAJOR SPACES All major spaces that will accommodate visitors are subtracted next including the largest lookout.

MINOR SPACES Smaller, more delicate spaces are subtracted, giving a hierarchy of space using light and ceiling height.

FINE TUNING Each adjustment made here are for comfort, some of which resolved issues of seating and access in the hierarchy of space.
