YEAR 12 COLLEGE BALL
WINTER WONDERLAND
Our Year 12 students celebrated their College Ball at the beautiful Pan Pacific Hotel in mid July. It was a fabulous evening of mocktails, music, dinner and dancing thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Students and their partners were commended on their impeccable behaviour, great attitude and impressive dance moves on the night. We also had a whopping 40 staff members in attendance this year, the most ever!
A huge thank you to all of our beautiful students and guests, our College Ball committee for all their work behind the scenes, our staff for helping out on the night, and our wonderful suppliers: Pan Pacific Hotel Perth (venue), Love Letters and Flamingo Surprise (styling and decor), Bliss Photographers (photography) and Western Sounds (DJ Jacob). AND PROUD
NAIDOC WEEK BLAK, LOUD
In the first week of Term 3, we celebrated NAIDOC Week with an unforgettable assembly organised by the Polly Farmer Foundation Follow the Dream program. The day was filled with joy, reflection, and a deep sense of community as we embraced this year’s theme: ‘Keep the Fire Burning, Blak, Loud and Proud.’
The celebration began with a traditional smoking ceremony led by Liam Nelson, involving smouldering various native plants to produce smoke with cleansing properties and the ability to ward off bad spirits Students walked through the smoke into the gym for our formal assembly, where the introductory spirit dance was performed by the Follow the Dream boys, led by Didge Player Tyan Garlett, a Sevenoaks alumni.
Respected Elders Jacqui and Gerald Eades graced the event, with Aunty Jacqui delivering the Welcome to Country. This created an atmosphere of reverence and connection, honouring the land and its ancient heritage. The powerful speeches, dances, and songs deeply moved students, teachers, and guests. We were lucky enough to have students from Cannington Community College Follow the Dream perform for us too!
One of the highlights was the presentation of NAIDOC awards, celebrating the outstanding achievements of our First Nations students This moment of pride and recognition honoured their hard work and dedication. A huge thank you to our esteemed guests who came along to present the awards
The festivities continued with a delightful spread of traditional Aboriginal foods Craft activities supported by Deadly Sista Girlz provided a hands-on experience, bringing the community together in creativity and shared learning The day was a beautiful tapestry of culture, history, and community spirit. It was a testament to the strength and resilience of First Nations Australians and a reminder of the importance of keeping the fire of their culture burning brightly So, how will you keep the fire burning?
WEAR IT PURPLE DAY
In August, we celebrated Wear it Purple Day, an annual expression of support and acceptance to LGBTQIA+ youth. Q-mmunity set up a stall with face painting, temporary tattoos, balloon animals and sweet treats for all to enjoy at break time. A huge thank you to our Q-mmunity students, Mr Luxton-Lawrence and Ms T for organising this fun event and to everyone who came along to show their support!

BOOK WEEK
READING IS MAGIC
Book Week is always a fun celebration on our school calendar. This year’s theme was "Reading is Magic" and students were invited to participate in games focusing on reading and literacy and to dress up as a favourite book character. We had great participation from students and staff alike, and all those who did dress up were invited to a celebratory party with food, Kahoots, giftsandmore, heldintheLibraryduringAdvocacy.
Our display resources for this fun event were beautifully supported by Navjot and Emily. It was great to see all our advocate groups working hard to solve the blurred cover and quiz competitions. Congratulations to our winners, Chelsea, Ashanna, Danielle, AG05 and AG13. We hope you enjoyed yourprizes!
This year we again ran our Book Face competition, which required students to strategically line up their face or body alongside a book cover so that there appears to be a melding of life and art. Congratulations to Emily and Navjotwhotookoutfirstprize!

BIG PICTURE ACADEMY NEWS
SPECIAL EFFECTS MAKE UP WITH NORTH METRO TAFE
This term, Big Picture Academy students left school with cuts, bruises, and the occasional black eye—but all in good fun! They had the chance to unleash their artistic flair by learning how to apply specialist makeup and special effects. We were thrilled to participate in a workshop led by Taya McKeon, lecturer and coordinator at North Metropolitan TAFE. The session included an engaging video, tutorial, and hands-on practice, introducing students to wig-making, costumes, and the roles and responsibilities within the creative industries. Students also learned about various employment opportunitiesinWA’sfilmandtheatresectors.
BOOLA BARDIP - WA STATE MUSEUM
A small group of BPA students took advantage of the wild weather to enjoy the delights of our fantastic state museum. Our intrepid explorers braved the rush hour traffic on a Transperth bus before exploring the treasures of the museum (easier said than done). There is so much to see, and one day is simply not enough! From the virtual stories and collections all around the museum exploring the diversity and spirit of the West Australian people, to the exhibits showcasing the beauty of our natural landscape and our coastline, you cannot help but be proud of our state. There is something for everyone, so whether you love exploring local marine life and ecosystems or are passionate about Indigenous culture and WA’s impact on our world, there arevibrantandinteractiveexhibitstoinformyou.
EXCURSION TO BENTLEY TAFE
If you are interested in careers in hospitality and patisserie, veterinary nursing, or fashion and design, consider enrolling over at Bentley TAFE! BPA students got the full tour of these three schools and were super impressed by what was on offer. Qualifications across all areas range from a Certificate II right up to advanced Diplomas.
The Hospitality area is award winning, focussing on both kitchen operations including chocolate sculpting, patisserie, and front of house. We saw several past students there fully immersed in creating their masterpieces There are so many opportunities in this area for students of all capabilities and the fully operational Bentley Lakes Restaurant is a superb place to visit
The fashion school has been Perth's leading design institution for over 50 years and boasts state of the art facilities and five fashion and textiles qualifications. You really do feel that the fashionistas of the future are there as they bring their designs to life
Finally, the Veterinary school is housed in a fully functioning animal hospital which provides a service to students, staff and the general public by appointment only. The school offers up to Diploma level in Aquaculture and Certificate III in Animal Studies. You can even become a qualified animal groomer! Check it out for yourself. clickhere clickhere
ZERO2HERO CONFERENCE
WRITTEN BY BPA STUDNET, JAYDEN HANSEN
This term, a few of us were selected to go to the Zero2Hero Annual Conference ‘IN YOUR HEAD’ at Perth Convention Centre. The day was full of activities that were great for understanding mental health and to just let loose! There were guest speakers talking about their mental challenges and the ways they got guidance in order to go on and achieve amazing careers. Some of the speakers included: Nick Hudson, founder of the push up challenge; Angie Bain, qualified councillor, wellbeing and performance educator; and Dr Justin Coulson, relationship, and wellbeing expert.
The program was excellent for learning about mental health and its challenges and how it affects young adults today. I strongly suggest going and touching base with IN YOUR HEAD, if not for yourself then for someone else. It’s so important for us to learn how to support ourselves and our friends in times of need
OPEN DAY
We absolutely loved meeting our future students at our Open Day early this term. Students took the opportunity to visit the campus, learn about our courses on offer and see what we're all about here at SSC! We’re looking forward to seeing you all at Orientation Days in Term 4 and can't wait to welcome you into our College community in 2025
Special shout out to our sister school, Cannington Community College, for all your work supporting students with their transition to senior school, especially the Year 10 Advocate teachers who came across for the day with their students, we appreciate you!

ALUMNI NEWS
We are immensely proud of our alumna, Aaliyah Nestoridis, who was honoured with the invitation to open a prestigious event at Government House this term. This significant occasion marked the 79th Anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia while also celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Australia
Aaliyah's selection to inaugurate such a high-profile diplomatic event is a testament to her exceptional achievements and growing recognition as an emerging leader. It underscores her potential as a powerful role model and advocate for Indigenous youth across Australia Her performance at the event was nothing short of remarkable. Both the Governor General, His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson APM, and the Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Perth, Listiana Operananta, were effusive in their praise for Aaliyah. They commended her confidence, impressive public speaking skills, and comprehensive knowledge of language, history, and culture.
Aaliyah's commitment to excellence was further demonstrated by her initiative to learn some Indonesian phrases, which she incorporated into her greetings to the audience This extra effort not only showcased her dedication but also her cultural sensitivity and diplomatic acumen.
This opportunity has undoubtedly positioned Aaliyah as a shining example of the bright future ahead for Indigenous leaders in Australia, while also contributing to the strengthening of international relations between Australia and Indonesia.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR INCREDIBLE TEACHERS
At Sevenoaks we have the most amazing bunch of teachers who advocate for our First Nations students. The common characteristics of schools that are more effective for Indigenous students include: strong and effective school leadership; a positive school culture that encourages care and safety among students and staff, as well as a positive sense of Indigenous student identity; teachers with the skills and knowledge to effectively engage and develop relationships with Indigenous students; and high levels of community involvement in the planning anddeliveryofschoolprocesses, prioritiesandcurricula.
We are so proud that these are covered effectively at Sevenoaks, recognised by our finalist place for the WA Education Awards for ExcellenceinCulturalResponsiveness.
Sevenoaks teachers go out of their way to ensure our students are successful and do not stop until they see the outcomes that they know ourstudentsarecapableof.Thankyou!

BUSINESS - SUGAR RUSH BAKE SALE FUNDRAISER
Our Year 11 Business Management & Enterprise and Certificate II Workplace Skills students operated their pop-up business ‘Sugar Rush’, a bakery shop, mid term. This project was aimed at raising money for the Muslim Women’s Support Centre (MWSC), who provide much neededshelterandsupportforvictimsofdomesticviolence.
This project has allowed our students to apply and demonstrate their skills, knowledge and understandings gained from the business courses through a hands-on-approach. The students surveyed staff and students on which items to produce to better cater for our school population, discussed different business names and created multiple logo designs to choose from, and created promotional vouchers, flyers, posters and banners to advertise the event. The students were then actively engaged in producing and packaging the baked goods using ourschool’shospitalitykitchenfacilities.
On the day of the bake sale, the students presented themselves professionally, interacting with staff and students while demonstrating great customer service, collaboration and team work. The students raised over $1,300 which was proudly donated to MWSC, along with a goodie box of donated goods from our on-site Op Shop, Back on the Rack. Students later visited the MWSC to lend a hand with boxing up pantry and fresh produce on one of the busiest days for handing out food essentials to families in need. The MWSC Pantry, through their partnership with Second Bite, feed over 150 families every month. Our students were very efficient in the way they helped out, starting a conveyerbeltforthepackagingprocess(genius)!
