To all of our families, students and community members,
A huge welcome to this wonderful edition of our term three newsletter. With COVID restrictions easing over the past term, we have been able to provide students with a range of opportunities to add to their experiencehereatSevenoaks.
Our first full College assembly in two years was held to present awards to students. It was a wonderful opportunity to bring the whole College together again to celebrate the successes of the students, who were excellentintheirparticipationattheassembly.
As you will also notice throughout the newsletter, some of our events have included the soccer and volleyball teams representing the College at various carnivals. Our Clontarf students have also been engaged in some friendlygamesofbasketballwithotherschools.
Third time lucky it was for the College Ball as students finally got to attend the social event of the year. Our students were outstanding representatives for our College and had the best time, looking amazing and dancing the night away.
- Dr Karen Read, Principal
Our Hospitality students were busy making coffees for visitors and fellow students and hosted the annual Mocktailevent, servingdrinksandfingerfoodtostudentsandstaff.
Excursions have returned. The Follow the Dream students went to AQWA whilst the Human Biology students wenttotheHarryPerkinsInstitutetosupporttheirlearninginafirst-classresearchinstitute.
Book Week was an opportunity to dress up as a favourite character from a story which students did to great effect.RUOK?daywasanothersuccessfulevent,raisingawarenessoflookingoutforeachother.
We held our ‘Open Day’ earlier in the term where students from Cannington Community College and other schools came along for the day to hear about our pathways to the future. Many of our students presented to the visitors on their experiences at Sevenoaks and did an outstanding job in doing so. As a result, a selection of these students were invited to present to the College Board about their ongoing journey here at Sevenoaks. Theywereexceptional.
Each year Sevenoaks has two very special scholarships which are awarded to students. The Jordan Thorsager Scholarship is in memory of a former student who was also a guild member in his time here at Sevenoaks. The recipient was a worthy, Amber Ferguson. The Wayne Lyons Scholarship has been awarded for the past 12 years in honour of a student who attended the former Cannington Senior High School. The recipients of this scholarship were Emad Osman and Jacob Yeomans. We acknowledge the Thorsager family and Mrs Tracey LyonforthesupportthattheycontinuetoprovideforthestudentsofSevenoaksSeniorCollege.

READING IS DREAMING WITH EYES OPEN...
Book week is always a fun celebration on our school calendar. This year’s theme was "Reading is Dreaming with Eyes Open" and students were invited to participate in games focusing on reading and literacy and to dress up as a favourite book character. We had great participation from students and teachers alike, and all those who did dress up for the day were invited toacelebratorypartyheldintheLibraryduringAdvocacy.
This year we ran an inaugural Book Face competition, which had some incredible submissions with Jemm Bajada the selected winner. This competition required students to strategically line up their face or body alongsideabookcoversothatthereappearstobeameldingoflifeandart.
Our display resources for this fun event were beautifully supported by Jemma Stone, Ella Giovenco and our incredible Graphic Design students who all provided the in-school advertising resources for the celebration. It was great to see all our advocate groups working hard to solve the blurred cover and Emoji book competitions. Congratulations to our winners, Advocacy9and26.

AQWA EXCURSION
ACADEMY NEWS
Staff and students from the Big Picture Academy visited AQWA recently to explore career opportunities and investigate the beautiful marine life of the West Australian coastline. It was interesting to learn about local aquatic creatures and the issues they face including how plastics are polluting the oceans and abandoned fishing equipment are causing serious harm to our sea life. AQWA has done a great job highlighting this in a confronting yet necessary way through their displays.
There were lots of opportunities to stop and admire the colourful crustaceans and serene sea creatures, though, as always, the sharks were the biggest crowd pleaser A great day out enjoyed by both staff and students.
SCHOOL BASED TRAINEESHIP CEREMONY
Arnold Yarran and Leshanti Narrier (pictured right) attended this year's ASBT Participation Ceremony representing the Sevenoaks Big Picture Academy. The event was attended by students and staff from 74 schools, both public and private. The keynote speaker was the Honourable Terry Healey MLA, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education and Training, who spoke with great enthusiasm about the skills for life and employment opportunities that traineeships offer all students. He spoke of resilience and a willingness to step outside of your comfort zone, qualities that all our Big Picture students work hard to adopt.
The ceremony presented awards to several hundred students and provided excellent entertainment from the Binar Dance Group. The day was topped off by a buffet lunch at Fremantle Oval Well done to you both, we are extremely proud of your achievements.
FAREWELL YEAR 12S
Late this term, Big Picture Academy staff and Year 12 students celebrated the end of their schooling with a fun day out
The morning began with bowling which saw an intense competition between Jen and Bradley, with Bradley finally taking the honours by a very close one point margin. Advisory Groups then battled it out in a game of Lazer Tag, with AG39 claiming victory The Year 12 students then took revenge on the staff and “owned” them in a second rematch.
Students and staff shared a fun morning before topping it off with a pizza feast. Huge thanks to Traayne for leading us in his version of “grace” The Big Picture Year 12s were then celebrated with some fun certificates. We wish them all the very best for their futures.

Follow the Dream students got to go “camping” in Australia’s largest single aquarium late this term; sleeping beneath 3 million litres of water surrounded by sharks! Follow the Dream Students had the unique opportunity to explore AQWA's exhibits by night with their own Ocean Guides and an exclusive tour.
They experienced the excitement of sleeping under the sea, discovered more about the amazing marine animals, enjoyed fun marine themed activities designed to educate and enthral, and slept over in Australia’s largest single aquarium surrounded by sharks, stingrays and hundreds of stunning fish!
What a truly unique and amazing experience. Thanks to FTD staff for supervision, VET coordinator Gary Hicklin, and DSG mentor Diana Bonnie for sleeping over with the students. We look forward to having this excursion as an annual event on the College calendar.
WA STUDENT COUNCIL - CONGRATS LIZZIE!
Recently, Premier Mark McGowan, and Education and Training Minister, Sue Ellery, announced the formation of a new WA Student Council, to inform the Education Minister on school issues. Program Coordinator, Dr Jennet Hansen, nominated Sevenoaks Senior College and Follow the Dream student, Lizzie Harris, for this opportunity.
38 student councillors were chosen during a rigours selection process from public schools across the state to represent the interests of more than 300,000 public school students and help inform education policy and reform. To our delight, Lizzie (pictured left) was selected! We couldn't be more proud of her and look forward to seeing what changes she can make during her time on the council.
We are excited to have Lizzie Harris appointed to the inaugural WA student council. As an emerging young Aboriginal leader, Lizzie will have an opportunity to represent her peers providing an Aboriginal perspective of being a student in our schools.

After months of planning with Adam Spink from Coates, the Sevenoaks lads managed to score a visit to the Belmont site on a cracking Wednesday morning.

The outside operation provided a look at the size of Coates and the amount of equipment that comes into the Belmont site. Whether brand new or relocated to the workshop to be refurbished, the boys quickly learnedhowbigthewholeoperationwas.

CAREER AND ENTERPRISE - MOCK INTERVIEWS
As part of the Career and Enterprise Year 12 Course of Study at Sevenoaks, students are required to complete an assessed Mock Interview and then a personal reflection of the process This involves students preparing a resumé, dressing professionally and then attending the interview, which is conducted by an external and very experienced interviewer. Students then review the video taken of their interview to reflect on their performance. This is often the first interview that many students experience and allows them to gain skills which they can use to obtain meaningful employment in the future. This assessment always receives very positive feedback from students and C&E teachers commend all those involved for their amazing efforts
CERT II MUSIC - PRACTICING AND PERFORMING
Cert II Music students have been working hard to prepare for an 'X Factor performance' assessment this term. It has been fantastic to watch students choose their songs and build up their performance skills. From an eclectic bunch of instruments: bass, guitar, voice and piano, the students have been working solo and in groups on their songs. The songs encompass jazz classics (Fly me to the Moon), movie hits (theme for ‘Skyfall’), Motown Greats (My Girl), Bhutanese rap (‘Yoe Lo’) and modern popular songs such as ‘Dandelions’, ‘idontwannabeyouanymore’ and ‘Reckless Love.’ We'd also like to take the opportunity to welcome and thank Shaun Liddell Jennings, our new music tutor who took up the reins at the beginning of Term 3. He studied at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) 10 years ago, has taught music at the Sound Centre since, is currently studying audio engineering, and plays bass in bands for events around Perth.
