Store those big music files and movies in your laptop: Rent space Computers are very sophisticated machines which can help us perform all kinds of tasks – from creating special effects for movies to sending an email mail to a loved one. But with most of us needing videos to upload and watch, music to enjoy and photographs to preserve, extra storage for our machines has become an absolute necessity. Remember, to store data and information, all computers need to have Random Access Memory (RAM) as well as read-only memory (ROM) as primary storage and nowadays we can put that storage on rent basis. Then there is secondary storage, which includes hard disk drives (HDDs), solid-state storage, optical storage and tape, external hard disk drive, solid-state drives (SSDs) that use flash-based memory and store data in flash memory chips.

Secondary storage can be removable, internal, or external. Referred to as digital storage, storage media, storage medium, or simply storage, a storage device is a hardware that holds information either temporarily or permanently. Storage is available both for single and networked computers, though the latter requires larger storage with large tape drives, cloud computing, or networked attached storage. A simple external drive can be rented out if your computer does not have enough memory and you have an urgent need to store heavy files.

To rent a hard disk of maybe 500 GB you will need to pay around Rs 400 a month. One terabyte (TB) storage space will cost you around Rs 1,500 or more. Buying a hard disk of 500 GB will set you back by around Rs 5,000. An Indian company was recently in the news for launching a monthly subscription programme to rent out hard disks, offering users the option to leave or renew the subscription after a specified period.

Users were allowed to rent 1terabyte of storage space for approximately Rs 438, 4TB for Rs 731, and 8TB of storage space for Rs 1,300 per month. You can also store your data in a remote location through cloud storage, which also provides backup and security of data. This is an ideal option for businesses that can put a large amount of storage on rent for minimum prices.
