Exciting Times at Servant! Greetings, Can you believe August is almost over? I must say, I feel as though it should be just a few days after the Fourth of July. Thankfully for all of us, this August has not had the heat associated with July or a normal Oklahoma August. As August quickly comes to an end and we begin to prepare for the fall, I want to take a moment to encourage you to take part in some of the many exciting happenings that are on the horizon at Servant! Today, I am highlighting three of these: First, a new modern worship service will begin on Sunday, August 27 at 9:30 a.m. in the Centrum. The service will be formatted differently so that I will be able to preach at both the Celebration Service and the Modern service during the 9:30 hour. While this change will be different, I am excited we are able to provide a new opportunity for people to connect with the Lord. Please know, this would not be possible without our wonderful staff. Second, fall Bible studies are about to ramp up! For the men, Buck and a Bible will kick off Tuesday, September 19, at 6:30 a.m. in Community Hall. The first study will be on Tim Tebow’s new book SHAKEN. Purchase your book and study guide today online at Amazon.com or Christian bookstores. I am really looking forward to leading this study I hope you will join me and maybe invite a friend or two. Dr. Matthew Mitchell Senior Minister

Servant Women in the Word (formerly Sharing the Kingdom) will start back on Tuesday, September 12, at 9:30 a.m. in Community Hall. Taught by Dr. Robyn Goggs, Servant Women in the Word is a large group Bible study that is a favorite among many women, as it appeals to the beginning follower as well as the seasoned believer. Come spend an exciting hour in Bible study, discussion, and Christian fellowship as we dive into the Book of Romans this fall. No registration required. Third, the Servant Foundation Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, September 16, at Silverhorn Golf Club. During the tournament, there will be a special opportunity for each golfer to “BEAT THE PREACHER” on a par three. For a $10 donation, you can hit a short shot against me and if you win, you take home a LIMITED EDITION t-shirt that says, “I BEAT THE PREACHER!” This will also give me the chance to meet everyone who plays that Saturday morning. All of these happenings and more can be found on our Website at www.churchoftheservant.com. I cannot wait to see you this Sunday! Matthew

Servant Foundation Golf Tournament Saturday, September 16

Are You Being Called To NextGen Leadership? One of the greatest joys we as followers of Christ get to experience is the joy of sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with others. God has blessed us all with the opportunity to partner with Him to daily demonstrate the amazing love, mercy and grace that is found in Jesus Christ. In Servant NextGen Ministries – our ministry to kids and students – we get to share Jesus with some incredible young people, all with the hope of helping them become fully committed followers of Christ. This happens through our various programs, missions and special events. But mostly, it happens when caring volunteer leaders say “yes” to sharing their life and their relationship with Christ with young people. Jeremy Patman is one of those caring leaders. He leads a 7th grade boy’s small group and participates in many of our special events. Here is a piece of his story as a volunteer leader. Last summer, I started on a journey that led me into Middle School Ministries. On June 2, 2016, I climbed on the Red Carpet bus headed for Disciple Camp with trepidation. The church needed one more male adult leader for Disciple Camp; I said “yes” with reluctance. This would be my third time attending middle school church camp – once as a fifth grader, and once about 14 years ago as a small group leader. The trip to Disciple Camp in 2016 was amazing and plugged me back into Student Ministries. This past year, I have been blessed with the opportunity to work primarily with the sixth grade boys small group. Between myself and Mike Todd, we are able to have fun, talk about life and God. Volunteering in Student Ministries this past year has meant a lot to me. Aside from getting to know Jenna, I have gotten to know the other small group leaders better. I have on-going conversations with other adults from Disciple Camp. Learning about the lives of the middle school kids at Servant is a blessing. They are loving, caring and accepting. They are seeking to know more about God, and how the Bible fits into their day-to-day lives. First Timothy 4:12 says, “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” I witness them living this out at camp, at church and with mission projects we have done. They are not the “church of the future,” as I was told at their age. They are growing and becoming followers of Christ for their generation NOW. It is encouraging and a blessing to be part of their walk with Christ.

NextGen

On June 1, 2017, I climbed back on the Red Carpet bus once again to head for Disciple Camp. There was no concern or trepidation. I have learned a lot in the last year. I learned some new games, like: “First Mates Orders”, “I Have Never”, “Protect the Penguin”, and “Bad Dad Jokes”. I know that Jenna, John and Sang provide lots of support. I also know that the kids are not looking for a long debate or discussion on the merits of C.S. Lewis, John Wesley, or Martin Luther. They want to be known for who they are. Sometimes all you need is a smile, a Frisbee, and a willingness to listen. - Jeremy Patman (pictured with middle school boys)

Jeremy’s story is just one of many incredible volunteer leader stories. It is a beautiful example of how sharing your time and love for Christ with others can make a tremendous impact on your own life, the life of others, and the Kingdom of God. The truth is, NextGen Ministries doesn’t happen without the faithful leadership of people like Jeremy. Our kids and students deserve caring leaders to simply smile, toss a frisbee, listen, and share their heart for God. Maybe you are one of those caring leaders! If so, we would love to grab coffee and share more about NextGen Ministries with you. You can contact Servant NextGen Ministries at 405-721-4141.

Missions On Monday, August 14, a team of servants delivered to the Hefner teachers and staff the blessing boxes you lovingly prepared for welcoming them back to the school year. The gratitude was overwhelming. Here are just a few of the thank you notes from the staff. To the gracious, giving members of Church of The Servant – THANK YOU! Your kindness and generosity is encouraging and a huge blessing to us. We appreciate your prayers as we strive to invest in students and families. Thanks again. – Angie Jernigan, Academic Math/Comm Skills Dear Church of the Servant – Thank you so much for the box of goodies and materials. My box was absolutely outstanding and contained so many things I needed. Your church is truly appreciated by all of us here at Hefner Middle School. Your work is such an encouragement. You will never know how it lifts our spirits to receive the boxes. Thank you again. – Jan Sands The generosity of your group never ceases to amaze me. Thank you so much for the school supplies (and snacks!); they’ll be put to good use! -Martin Gerst, Science Teacher, Team 8B Just want to say a heartfelt Thank You to you for the TA Bags full of the goodies. Your generosity year after year is so much appreciated and is such a great help. Blessings to you all! – Wanda Ivey, Hefner TA Thank you so much for the bucket of goodies yesterday at Hefner. This will be my first year at Hefner. I have been at Mayfield MS for the past 5 years, so it was a nice gift to start the year off. Thanks again, and if I could do anything for you, let me know. – Jon Belt, PEAK Teacher, Hefner Middle School Thank you so much for the tub of goodies. It was really sweet of everyone to think of us here at Hefner. – Stacy Weinmann, Office Staff Thanks again for the gift ‘tub’. It is all very appreciated. We are very lucky to have you all doing what you are doing. It is incredibly generous and kind. Thanks again. – Tim I cannot express the gratitude towards you guys in all that you have done for us here at Hefner. From the sweet notes, to our gift boxes, to lunches, and the most important is the prayer warriors that you are. I can say this: I am strong in my faith and the past 3 years I have grown in a stronger and more faithful relationship with God. Since you guys have adopted us, I feel the presence of Him more and more. I started a girls group in the mornings and talk to the girls about faith, confidence and many more topics that they face in this world. And I could use some prayers, mainly to just speak God’s word and lead by example. Again, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do. Each and every one of you are a HUGE…..HUGE blessing!! Thank you and may you have a blessed day! – Carmen Pence I wanted to take a few moments to thank you all for your generous donation to our school this year. It is a blessing to have the supplies we need to start the school year without worry. I am also thankful there are people in the community who still see the value of public education and are willing to support it. Again, thank you all so very much for your support and assistance! – Robert Hullet, Band Director, Hefner Middle School

Have You Stopped By Earthglow Lately?

Earthglow Gift Shop is continuously updating their selections of household and gift items, so stop in often to see what our creative buyers have added to our unique collection. New items this week include handy, insulated back-to-school lunch bags and “Trunksters” that are a perfect addition to the trunk of your car. They are handy for tucking away groceries or keeping trunk items organized. An insulated “Trunkster Liner” can be added to keep those frozen items cold as you make your way home. Proceeds from every item sold in the shop are accumulated and then shared with most appreciative local missions. Circle of Care, a United Methodist organization that works to make a difference in the lives of Oklahoma children and youth, recently shared these words of appreciation: “We are so blessed by your recent contribution of $1, 353 to our ministry. It humbles us when we see the generous outpouring of our many supporters. In 2017, we will continue to enrich our existing programs and initiate new ones that will allow us to share the light and love of Christ with even more ‘at promise’ youth and families in Oklahoma. But we know it is only through your support that we can continue to make a real difference in the lives of the children and youth entrusted to our care.”

“I am so excited to be teaching again! The book of Romans is a poignant book of our faith, which will cause us to ask, “What does it mean for my life that I am a follower of Jesus Christ?” – Dr. Robyn Goggs

A Class for Spiritual Formation

9:30-11:30 a.m., begins September 12 (Ongoing for 28 sessions) Led by Sherri Price Beginning Tuesday, September 12, women and men are invited into a 28-week Spiritual Formation experience that will change the way you relate to God, to others, and to yourself, opening the door to a lasting impact on your heart and God’s Kingdom. In a spiritual formation experience, our goal is spiritual growth. It is more about transformation than information. Together we will explore different types of prayer – looking at ways to connect our spiritual life to our everyday routine, allowing a deeper awareness of God in our daily being and doings. We will look at scripture and how it connects and illuminates our lives and our experiences. The spiritual disciplines of prayer, scripture, study, worship, ministry, and conversation are explored as ways to meet Christ, renew our faith, and deepen our love of God. Perhaps we will even begin to see others and ourselves differently in God’s light.

An Invitation into the Book of Romans

A large group Bible study that is a favorite among many women as it appeals to the beginning follower as well as the seasoned believer. Spend an exciting hour in Bible study, discussion, and Christian fellowship as we dive into the Book of Romans.

Delectable Dishes and Dice Tossing with Delight

Last Friday night, August 18, found many of the women of Church of the Servant sharing great food, hugs and laughter as Women’s Ministry held an evening of Dishes and Dice. It was such fun to share those special salads, casseroles and yummy desserts that many have forgotten they even knew how to make. We then enjoyed a mission moment featuring Circle of Care’s Child Share program. Jayme Porter from Child Share spoke about the tremendous need for foster parents and support for the foster care program in Oklahoma, and almost $700 was generously contributed to help with this important local mission. Then the ladies displayed their competitive spirits by moving from table to table enjoying a robust game of Bunco. Tickets to Anita Renfroe’s October 5th “Flat Out Funny” presentation here at the church were the prizes awarded to the game winners (as well as the biggest loser!). Servant is blessed with a Women’s Ministry that addresses so many needs for the women of our church – Bible studies, small group experiences, entertainment, even a threeday spiritual renewal retreat to the beautiful Arbuckles coming up in a few weeks. If you’re not participating in one or more of these activities, contact Robyn Goggs, Women’s Minister, rgoggs@churchoftheservant.com or Susie Cobden, her assistant, scobden@churchoftheservant.com to get plugged in. NextGen High School Small Group

This summer, Servant High School had the opportunity to host a parent/student mission trip to Rio Bravo. While we had parent and student pairings, we also had a grandparent, cousins, siblings, and mentors. Our parent and student mission trip became a family mission.

Our mission in Servant High School is to lead students to become fully committed followers of Jesus Christ. One of the ways we do that is with our small group ministry. Small group consist of students (same gender and grade) and two caring adults. We will meet in Chapel of the Cross for a time of worship before heading off into our small group space! We meet all semester on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Register at www. churchoftheservant.com/events and join a group today! What if I have questions? Contact Sang Nguyen at 405-728-4754 or snguyen@churchoftheservant.com.

We had an incredible experience serving our friends in Rio Bravo. The beauty of the Gospel message is that it impacts everyone. We found that the people of Rio Bravo were also serving us. The gospel message goes beyond our social status, skin color, language, and our community. The Kingdom of God is being advanced and we got to experience a glimpse of it in Mexico. This isn’t just our story or the story of Rio Bravo, but God’s story. We invite you to hear this story. The Rio Bravo presentation will be at 9:30 a.m. on August 27 in Chapel of the Cross!

Servant Kids Wednesday Nights Begins September 20

We are so excited to announce that beginning on September 20, “Wednesday Nights” for Servant Kids will have a brand new look! But as always it will be a time of meaningful worship, fun activities, and opportunities to build relationships with other kids and adult leaders. Here are some significant changes parents need to be aware of: o NEW TIME: 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Extended care will be available for children whose parents or siblings are participating in an activity in the building beyond 7:30 p.m. When children are registered, parents can indicate if extended care will be required for their children.

Family Worship Night September 13

Our NEXTGEN Ministry at Servant is about combining the influences of the Family and the Church to lead the next generation to become fully committed followers of Christ. We believe a great way to make this happen is by creating shared spiritual experiences for the families. Family Worship Nights are one of these experiences. A Family Worship Night is planned for September 13, 6:00-7:30 p.m. The evening will begin with a FREE pizza/salad dinner in Community Hall. Families must register for dinner at www.churchoftheservant.com/ events. Dinner will be followed by worship in the Centrum.

o 1st thru 5th graders will check-in upstairs at the Centrum and will be part of a 20-minute high energy program which will include: music, dancers, interactive games, and teaching time. This time will be led by Susan Cosby, Brooke and Paul Gebb, John Gilstrap, Tommy Glenn, and Ryan McGee. After the opening, the kids will go downstairs for activities, a mission moment, and small group time where the Bible point of the week will be discussed. Parents will pick their children up downstairs. 1st through 3rd grade will be facilitated by Cathy Hersom and 4th & 5th will be facilitated by Cindy Brackenbury. o Preschoolers will check-in downstairs and meet there for the entire evening. Their evening will be full of fun and faith adventures. The opening each week will include music and a teaching time with Don Cole. It will be followed with activities that will emphasize the Bible point for the evening. Preschoolers will be facilitated by Dayna Slater. o Register your children for Wednesday Nights at www.churchoftheservant. com/events. o Wednesday Nights are also incorporating several evenings of Family Worship Nights into the schedule. If families are not participating in “Wednesday Nights”, they are still welcome to participate in Family Worship Nights.

Servant Kids Camp September 29 - October 1

Servant Kids Camp, 1st – 5th graders, will be held September 29 – October 1 at Canyon Camp near Hinton, OK. This year’s theme is ENCOURAGER. The weekend’s activities will be based on Romans 1:12 – “When we get together, I want to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours.” Activities will include worship, nature hikes, games, crafts, small group, and lots of fun. These 48 hours of church camp will be an amazing time for our kids to get to know each other and share God’s love. As they expand their understanding of being an encourager to others, it will strengthen their faith, their Christian friendships, and most importantly, their knowledge of our Lord. The activities will help them focus on ways to Know and Love God and to Trust and Accept Jesus. Check-in time is 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 29. Dinner will not be served at camp. Families are invited to join their camper for lunch on Sunday, October 1 at 11:45 a.m. Family worship will follow lunch at 12:30 p.m. and camp will conclude following worship. Register your camper at www.churchoftheservant.com/events. Deadline for registration is September 13. Camp fee is $150. After a camper’s registration is received, they will receive a confirmation and information on what to bring to camp. Page 8 I ChurchoftheServant.com

Welcome Camilla Riley to our Team!

It is with joy that we share with you that Camilla Riley is now on part-time staff with us in Care Ministries at Church of the Servant. Many of you know that in the recent past we had Larry Becker and Judie Ellis doing some visitation for us (nursing homes, hospitals, etc.) and that they both retired from those positions this past spring. Therefore, we are thrilled to have Camilla come on board with us in that same kind of capacity. Camilla has such a big heart and such a strong and mature faith in Christ. She has served as a trained lay Care Chaplain for several years, and she’s excited to enter into this new role as a staff member. She will be such a valuable asset for our ministry. If you see Camilla around the church, welcome her into this new role!
