3M - NOT ENOUGH? The landscape of education in Malaysia and probably around the world has certainly changed over the last few decades. Would you agree? Maybe yes to some of you, and maybe some would find this debateable or perhaps to some others, it does not really matter at all. On the other hand, teachers, parents and students would certainly shout out a “yes” to this notion. Back in the 1970s, 1980s and even 1990s, when you have the 3M skills of “Menulis, Membaca, Mengira” (Write, Read, Count), you are deemed to have gotten the essential attributes for survival and in the path towards a sustainable career.

Do you have the “3M”? And if you do, is it enough for you? Is it enough for students today who will go out into the era of Industrial Revolution (IR) 4.0? What do parents expect from education providers – ie. the school and the teachers? Are teaching skills and teaching contents of yester-years still applicable and relevant today in the classrooms? Apart from the subject content that the teachers already have, how important is it for teachers to also have knowledge of pedagogy, psychology, philosophy, classroom management, curriculum planning, and teaching and learning skills? Whatever the answers may turn out to be, for sure, students in this postmillennial times are engulfed inside the challenges of the era and sandwiched in between the expectations of their parents and their teachers.

By Dr. David Yeoh Teaching is a gift. One could be born with it or over time learn and develop the gift.

Whichever way the gift is acquired, it must be sharpened through long years of practice with proper mentorship and guidance. It is a life-long learning process for teachers. As iron sharpens iron, so a senior teacher can sharpen the juniors. A great person once said, “Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.” This reflects the depth and breadth of impact that a teacher can pound into the soul and mind of their students – intellectually, physically and emotionally. Hence, teachers must be the best, not just in their “head”, but also in their “hands” and their “heart”.

Education is a process of teaching and learning. This is probably the simplest way of defining this oceanic term. The approach subscribed long ago used to be teachercentred and content-centred – in other words, the task of the teacher is considered completed when the contents of the subject are taught and delivered. The process of teaching and learning must encompass not just the delivery of the content but the assessment of the outcomes with continual quality improvements and constructive alignment. To put it in simple language: at the end of the subject lesson, what learning outcomes can be observed in the students?

The approach then should be focused on what and how students learn, and what steps should a teacher take to improve the content and teaching method inside and outside the classroom such that the students are able to internalise, understand, demonstrate and apply what they have learned. This is the student-centred learning and outcome-based education that are essential for students in this post-millennial because this approach builds the “head”, “hands” and “heart” of every student.

“Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” The teaching vocation is demanding with sacrifices. That torch of passion in the heart of the teacher must be sustained by love for the younger generation liken to seeds sown for the community around us. The late Selvasunther had a vision and planted a single seed back in early 2000. The young shoot was watered by Sze Nair. It started small and the roots grew.

Having said all these, what do parents expect from education providers – the school and

In the Cognitive domain, students must be able to do the following: remembering, understanding, applying, analysing, evaluating and creating – these, in hierarchical order, as the student reaches the more senior class. The thinking and problemsolving abilities, especially to open-ended reallife problems, are crucial. In the Psychomotor domain, physical activities leading to experiential learning are vital – this involves the development of skills towards modern tool usage, communication, financial and project management. In the Affective domain, emotional growth with balanced selfconfidence and interpersonal development through peer interactions are pertinent for an individual to function healthily in the family and community. Herein lies teamwork spirit embedded with respect, moral boundaries and ethics.

When the students have been fully trained, they will be able to launch out successfully irrespective of IR 4.0 or even IR 5.0. Having just 3M is definitely not enough!

Dr. David Yeoh Introduction Dr. David Yeoh is the Chairman of Seri Jubli International School’s Board of Governors. He is a recipient of the New Zealand International Doctorate Research Scholarship and obtained his doctorate from the University of Canterbury. With over 20 years of experience in Malaysia and abroad, Dr. Yeoh has published a book with McGraw-Hill, Singapore and co-authored book chapters in New Zealand and the USA. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow and a Structural Engineer in New Zealand, and while in Italy, he was a Visiting Professor. He is a reviewer for a journal under the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). This year, here in Seri Jubli International School, we decided to organise our very first

SJ’s Got Talent

in order to promote creativity and innovation among students.

As live performances were still not possible at the time, students were asked to submit video recordings of their performances instead. A total number of 29 performance videos (19 from Year 1-Year 5; 10 from Year 6-Year 10) were submitted! There was a good variety of performances: dance, singing, drawing, cooking, playing musical instruments, performing magic tricks, etc. We are really proud of all our students!

In conjunction with Malaysia Day, as well as to promote a healthy lifestyle of exercise, we launched our very first “SJ Virtual Run 2021” on 1st September till 16th September.

The students, teachers and staff of SJIS could participate in the run from wherever they were, be it indoors on a treadmill or outdoors in the park. We were really encouraged by everyone’s enthusiasm and perseverance. The teachers and staff were especially enthusiastic and competitive as they were divided into two teams for an internal competition!
