MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

Dear Students and ㎩rents,

“Sports don’t build character; they reveal it.” — John Wooden The 8th of August marked the close of the Olympics 2020/2021. Despite the pandemic and much push back against holding the event, it was still a good opportunity to inspire the world and bring a sense of positivity in the midst of much despair. The range of sports at the Olympics truly highlighted the amazing skills of all the Olympians hailing from around the world. Even as we applaud their achievements and talents, let us also zoom into the life lessons we can draw from the event.

Allow me to share one lesson that aptly serves as a reminder for us in life: “It is not what you do that matters, but WHO YOU ARE that counts”. Rather than just focusing on winning and achievements, the world’s most competitive athletes have been captured showing gentleness and warmth to one another — celebrating, peptalking, wiping away one another’s tears of disappointment, etc. From a surfer jumping in to translate for the rival who’d just beaten him (Kanoa Igarashi of Japan and Italo Ferreira of Brazil); and high-jumping friends agreeing to share a examples. It takes a whole village…

There is a famous proverb in Africa, “It takes a whole village to raise a child”, which means that the responsibility of raising a child does not solely lie with the parents, but also the environment and society that the child grows up in.

more energy for these children to regain their selfconfidence in life. For schools with big classes and many students, our children’s development would solely depend on whether they are lucky enough to have a good teacher.

Even in the past, parenting has not been an easy task.

Not only did it require great energy and effort, but also continuous persistence. However, in today's world, where information and technology are rapidly changing more than ever before, and information sharing seems easier, it is actually even more challenging. As we busy ourselves day and night for hopes of a better life, even as adults, we sometimes find it difficult to cope. How then would we have the energy to guard our children against all kinds of information that they may be receiving?

Fortunately, more and more parents are aware of this problem and have begun to look for other educational alternatives. Various homeschools, private schools and international schools have sprung up over the years. In Malaysia, the number of international schools has increased from about 80 in 2013 to more than 170 in 2020! For me, in the two years that I’ve been in charge of school admissions, I’ve found that most parents hope to find a way out from the existing education system.

As a result, many parents have passed the responsibility of nurturing their child to the school. Of course, it is fine if a child is able to cope and keep up. But if the child is unable to, tuition classes have become the social norm.

We continue to fill our children's childhoods with endless schoolwork and use them to determine their progress, while they are left to fend for themselves in a highly competitive and pressurising environment.

Yet, we seem to have forgotten that they are only children.

Have we ever stopped to ask: Are our children happy?

Do they enjoy studying in school? Has their education in school turned them into machines just to sit for exams?

Have we allowed their never-ending schoolwork to overwhelm their joy of learning, their curiosity, their creativity?

At this time, we need to ask ourselves, which is more important: Their academic achievements or their joy of learning?

Children will not always stay as children. They will eventually grow up, and go through periods of rebellion that may cause headaches for their parents. Even as they grow, the emotional changes they face will play a big part in who they become in the future. Every child will grow according to his or her own timing. In terms of education, spoon-feeding may be adequate for some children but it may also limit their capabilities, or cause children who "do not meet the typical education standards" to be rejected. This, in turn, would require 4

The small class system of international schools allows teachers to make adjustments according to the strengths and weaknesses of individual students more quickly. It can also give children a happy and creative learning environment. To promote student-teacher interaction, children are also encouraged to ask questions during the learning process, which is very different from other schools. This kind of learning environment allows children to enjoy learning better.

A happy learning environment is the best investment we can give to our children. I once read this on the Internet:

“A lucky person's lifetime is cured by his childhood, while an unlucky person's lifetime is spent curing his childhood.”

Only when a child has a happy childhood and a place for them to be curious and learn, then only can he or she continuously become a better person in the future.

This has always been something that I have firmly believed in. Although most parents know me as the person in charge of the school’s admissions, I had already sent my children to this school for a few years prior to joining Seri Jubli International School as a staff.

This is because I believed and saw that difference in this school. This is also the best gift that I, as a parent, can give to my children in their learning journey.

I sincerely hope that the teachers, students and environment here in Seri Jubli International School can be the “whole village” that gives strength to our children.

She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business (2nd lower Hons.) from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and a Postgraduate Diploma in International Hospitality Management from Les Roches International School of Hotel Management, Switzerland. She is also a mother of two, and has lived abroad for many years before moving back to Kluang ten years ago for the sake of her children.

STUDENT’S CORNER FRIENDEMIC 2021 – JOHOR LEAD CONVENTION!

On the 31st of July 2021, here in Seri Jubli International School, we made history by hosting our very first Virtual National Convention – FRIENDEMIC 2021: JOHOR LEAD CONVENTON (JLC)!

To kickstart the event, we were introduced to the MCs of the day, Tr. Zul (SJIS) and Coach Joel (Leaderonomics).

They started the event by welcoming all the participants from Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Melaka and of course, Johor. They also explained that the event was named “Friendemic 2021” because they wanted to give students the opportunity to forge friendships with students from other states like Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Melaka.

The programme was divided into 5 parts – Games, Greetings, Go MAD Project, Group Breakout and Gathering Back. The Games segment started with an interesting Word Formation Game where the participants had to form as many words as possible using the word “Friendemic”. The winner of this game was Jayden Leong (Year 9). Dr. Victor Wong even personally delivered his prize to him after the event! Overall, the participants had a lot of fun playing the games together and also watching videos of the HOPE National E-Convention that happened in June this year. This was followed by a speech by our Principal, Tr. Paulus Lee.

After that, we had the M.A.D. (Making A Difference) Project Presentations. This year, it was decided that every school would do a Project Banjir – because of the flood devastation last year. The 4 finalists were: Charis International School, Tawau (Sabah); Sekolah Sri KDU, KL; SMK Canossian Convent, Kluang (Johor), and SMK (P) Sri Aman, KL. As each school presented their project videos, the judges took turns to ask questions about the respective projects. After the presentations, participants were invited to vote for the best project!

While the voting was in progress, the participants were divided into different breakout rooms according to their states. As SJIS was the host of this JLC, the SJIS Student Leaders from each House were in charge of hosting each of the states in their respective breakout rooms: Aeris (Pahang), Aqua (Terengganu), Ignis (Melaka), Terra (Kelantan).

Finally, as the participants all gathered back, we took the opportunity to appreciate all the teachers from the respective schools and also announced the winners of the M.A.D Projects: 1st place: SMK (P) Sri Aman 2nd place: Sekolah Sri KDU 3rd place: Charis International School, SMK Canossian Convent All in all, despite the many changes in planning, the “Friendemic 2021 – Johor Lead Convention” was held successfully! Many thanks to all the students and teachers for their hard work!

PAST EVENTS

SJIS VIRTUAL OPEN DAY On 24th July 2021, we had our very first Virtual Open Day! The activities of the day included a talk by our Principal, Tr. Paulus Lee on < Why choose Seri Jubli International School? >, the Virtual Campus Tour by our Year 10 students, and four Free Online Trial Classes for Science and ICT for kids aged 5-13 years old.

We had a successful Virtual Open Day with 40 parents and more than 40 external students who joined us! We would also like to thank all SJIS parents and students for your participation and support! We couldn’t have done it without you!

PARENTING SUPPORT PROGRAM < Do you understand your child’s emotions? > On 21st August 2021, we had another <Parenting Support Program> via Zoom with Mr. Paul Tam. His sharing was very insightful and helpful to us as he brought us through the differences of each generation, and explained to us how this matters in our parenting journey.

We had about 22 parents who joined us for both sessions, and we hope that all parents benefitted from the sessions in one way or another. Stay tuned for more programs!

PARENT’S MEET On 28th August 2021, we had a Parents’ Meet where Principal Paulus Lee took the opportunity to address all the parents with some updates in the school. Some key issues that were addressed included the reopening of school, changes to the timetable, assessments and examinations, as well as new ECA programs!
